Abstract

It has been more than a year since Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine in February 2022. Russia’s military operation is still on-going as Ukraine fights vigorously. Russia is among the most powerful countries in the world by military and experts argue that Kremlin hugely underestimates Ukraine’s resistance. It is notable that Ukraine has been forging a partnership with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) since 1991 because they perceive Russia as their common enemy. The fact that Ukraine has managed to be undefeated by Russia so far opens the possibility that their partnership, which manifests for example in the form of long-term military training and education, has helped Ukraine to build its defense capacity the country required to deal with present security challenges. The research finds that NATO-Ukraine collaboration in enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities has positive impacts on building Ukraine’s readiness in dealing with its security issues, although geopolitical complexities, internal dynamics, and resource constraints exist as challenges Ukraine needs to overcome to continue enhance its defence capacity.

Abstract

Global security studies are increasingly paying attention to the role of women in terrorism. For years, women were usually considered only as victims or supporters of terrorism. However, the role of women in terrorist organizations is much more complex. They do many things, from spreading ideology to carrying out acts of violence. There are those who categorize the role of women in terrorist groups based on their ideology, such as in terrorist groups that demand independence or send countries. In these circumstances, women are more likely to be responsible for operational tasks. The aim of this research is to analyze the role of women in terrorist organizations by placing special emphasis on gender dynamics in relation to ideology and acts of violence. The data collection method is descriptive qualitative, and literature study is used as the data collection method. The results of the analysis show that the role of women in terrorist organizations is not only as ordinary supporters, but also directly involved in violence and the spread of ideology. Often, women are used to carry out acts of terror, both as main agents and as support crew. Women play an important role in maintaining and spreading the ideology of terrorism in an ideological context. They assist in recruiting new members and engage in radicalization and indoctrination processes.

Abstract

Resource conflicts in Indonesia have been going on for a long time, especially regarding land ownership and natural resources such as gold, nickel, oil and gas and others. This conflict involves the state, companies and indigenous communities. One example is the conflict between Freeport and the Papuan people regarding gold mining there. These conflicts can be analyzed using Resource Warfare, Asymmetric Warfare, and State Defense theories. The aim of this research is to analyze resource conflicts in Indonesia using these theories, as well as looking at the role of resources in winning asymmetric wars. This research uses qualitative methods by conducting a literature review of the theories of Resource Warfare, Asymmetric Warfare, and State Defense, as well as case studies of resource conflicts in Indonesia such as Freeport in Papua, Newmont in Sulawesi, and Pongkor in West Java. Data was collected from various references and then analyzed descriptively. The results of the analysis show that resource conflicts in Indonesia can be understood through Resource Warfare and Asymmetric Warfare theories. Countries, companies and indigenous communities compete for resources for their respective interests. In an asymmetric war, possession of resources such as gold and nickel becomes important to win the war. Meanwhile, State Defense theory explains the state's efforts to defend its sovereignty and security regarding this resource conflict.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines how Bela Negara Education improves Indonesia's main islands' asymmetric defensive strategy. Our narrative assessment identifies effective and contextually acceptable state military education programs that match the topography of these important islands. The main island’s defense plan (P3B) implements the comprehensive defense strategy by designating the main islands as defensive bases from outer to inner mandala. Bela Negara Education is vital to public knowledge and active participation in the defense system. The 3CS Bela Negara Education program has promoted Bela Negara values and attitudes. Bela Negara Education should be based on five values: patriotism, sacrifice, nation-state consciousness, Pancasila as the guiding ideology, and Bela Negara capability development. This schooling should use four learning paths. This study advocates a welfare-first approach before teaching national values and developing stakeholder synergy for Bela Negara Education.
