Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to provide a historical analysis of the educational methods employed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during the Mecca and Medina periods, based on the Sirah Nabawiyah, and to explore their implications for the development of contemporary Islamic education. Employing a qualitative approach with a historical-descriptive method, the research examines primary sources in the form of classical works on the Sirah Nabawiyah and secondary sources consisting of contemporary academic studies published in reputable journals. The findings indicate that the Prophet’s educational method in Mecca focused on the formation of faith, moral character, and spiritual resilience through personal and dialogical approaches, particularly within the setting of Dar al-Arqam. In contrast, during the Medina period, the educational method evolved into a more systematic and institutional model, marked by the establishment of the mosque as the center of learning, the implementation of community-based instruction, and the integration of spiritual, social, and practical dimensions of education. The study further reveals that prophetic educational principles such as tadarruj (gradualism), hiwar (dialogue), qudwah (exemplary conduct), tarbiyah ruhiyah (spiritual cultivation), and ta‘lim ‘amali (practical learning) remain highly relevant in addressing the crises of contemporary Islamic education, which are characterized by the dichotomy of knowledge, moral decline, and detachment from spiritual values. The practical implications of this research include recommendations to integrate holistic approaches into Islamic educational curricula, to develop learning models grounded in exemplary conduct, and to build educational ecosystems that harmonize intellectual, spiritual, and social dimensions.

Abstract

Religious moderation is an important concept in Islam that emphasizes justice, balance, tolerance, and the avoidance of extreme behavior in religious practice. This study aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation in the leadership of Ali ibn Abi Talib from the perspective of thematic hadith studies. This research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach and thematic hadith (maudhu’i) analysis. Primary data were obtained from classical hadith literature, while secondary data were collected from books, journals, and other scholarly works related to religious moderation and Islamic leadership. The findings reveal that the values of religious moderation in the Prophet Muhammad’s traditions include justice, balance, tolerance, anti-extremism, deliberation, and compassion. These values were clearly reflected in the leadership of Ali ibn Abi Talib through his fair law enforcement, tolerance toward non-Muslims, dialogical approach in resolving conflicts, rejection of extremism, application of deliberation in governance, and simple as well as humanistic lifestyle. The leadership of Ali ibn Abi Talib demonstrates that religious moderation is not merely a conceptual discourse, but can also be implemented in social and political practices. This study is expected to contribute to the development of hadith studies, Islamic leadership studies, and the strengthening of religious moderation in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

The Safavid civilization represents one of the most significant periods in Islamic history, making substantial contributions to the advancement of knowledge through the integration of religious sciences and rational sciences. This study aims to analyze the contributions of the Safavid civilization to the development of knowledge and to examine its implications for the integration of science within Islamic education. Employing a qualitative approach through library research, the study draws upon data collected from books, scholarly journals, and other relevant academic sources. The data were analyzed descriptively through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that scientific and intellectual progress during the Safavid era was supported by governmental policies, the establishment of madrasas and libraries, and the patronage provided to scholars and intellectuals. These developments fostered significant achievements in philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, art, architecture, and calligraphy. Furthermore, the Safavid intellectual tradition successfully integrated reason, revelation, and spiritual intuition, particularly through the philosophical thought of Mulla Sadra, thereby preventing a dichotomous separation between religious and secular knowledge. This study demonstrates that the Safavid intellectual tradition provides a historical and epistemological foundation for the contemporary paradigm of science integration by illustrating how the harmonious relationship between religious and rational sciences can address the persistent dichotomy of knowledge in Islamic education. The findings indicate that the Safavid model of scholarship is not only historically significant but also practically applicable to the development of integrative curricula, interdisciplinary learning approaches, the strengthening of research culture, and educational practices that balance scientific competence with Islamic values. This research contributes a historical perspective on knowledge integration as an alternative framework for addressing the persistent dichotomy of knowledge in contemporary Islamic education.

Abstract

Abstract

This article critically examines the da'wah legacy of the Demak Bintara Sultanate (1478–1554 CE) as a foundational point for the discourse of Islam Nusantara, particularly in addressing the debate on whether the Islamization strategy undertaken by the Walisongo and the sultans of Demak constitutes cultural separation or cultural acculturation. Employing a social-intellectual historical approach and hermeneutic analysis of primary sources, including babad manuscripts, inscriptions, and mosque architecture, this study identifies three main dimensions of Demak's da'wah legacy: the politico-religious, the socio-cultural, and the epistemological. The findings demonstrate that the Demak Sultanate's da'wah model pursued a dialectical path that neither fully separated from Hindu-Buddhist-Javanese traditions nor uncritically merged with them without Sharia-based filtering. This model formed a synthesis that later became the prototype for the formation of Islam Nusantara. The contribution of this article lies in mapping the intellectual genealogy of Demak's da'wah, which has been insufficiently elaborated in the academic framework of contemporary acculturation theory.
