Abstract

Medical waste is hazardous waste that may cause infections, occupational injuries, and environmental pollution if not managed appropriately. Nursing and midwifery students, as future healthcare professionals, should acquire adequate medical waste management literacy during their academic training. This community service program aimed to improve students' literacy on medical waste management through interactive health education and simulation-based training. The program was conducted on 13 October 2025 at Universitas Hang Tuah Pekanbaru and involved 10 nursing and midwifery students selected using purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of a pre-test, educational sessions, medical waste segregation simulation, group discussion, and a post-test. The results showed that the mean knowledge score increased from 32.8 before the intervention to 56.4 after the intervention, representing an improvement of 21.8 points. The greatest improvement was observed in infectious waste and sharps waste management, while knowledge related to Needlestick Injury (NSI), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and PostExposure Prophylaxis (PEP) required further reinforcement through repeated simulation-based training. Most participants also reported high satisfaction with both the educational content and learning methods. This program effectively improved medical waste management literacy and may serve as a simulation-based educational model for strengthening occupational safety competencies among future healthcare professionals. Abstract

Abstract  Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become an increasing public health concern among adolescents due to unhealthy lifestyles and limited health literacy. These conditions highlight the need for health promotion and preventive strategies that actively engage adolescents as agents of change within the school setting. This community service program aimed to improve adolescents' literacy on NCD prevention through the implementation of the GENHEALTH program based on a peer education approach. The program involved 200 students from SMAN Plus Riau Province, including 10 selected students trained as GENHEALTH Ambassadors. The intervention consisted of interactive health education sessions, peer educator training, development of visual and digital health promotion media, including the CERDIK pocketbook, posters, infographics, social media campaigns, and a Mini Health Check Day conducted in collaboration with the local primary healthcare center. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a pre-test and post-test design to assess changes in participants' knowledge. The results demonstrated an increase in the proportion of students with good knowledge from 26% to 69%, while the proportion with poor knowledge decreased from 30% to 6%. In addition, ten GENHEALTH Ambassadors were successfully established to sustain health promotion activities within the school. The GENHEALTH program effectively improved adolescents' health literacy regarding NCD prevention and has the potential to be replicated as a school-based health promotion model.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) remains a leading contributor to premature mortality and long-term complications, particularly in Indonesia, where health literacy levels are alarmingly low. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of EduDiab-Online, a web-based diabetes education model integrated with a peer-support approach, in improving health literacy and clinical outcomes among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in community settings. Method: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group was employed by involving 120 T2DM patients from two primary healthcare centers in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention consisted of six weekly online educational modules combined with peer-support forums facilitated by trained peer mentors. Data were collected over four months using validated instruments assessing health literacy, self-efficacy, HbA1c, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure. Statistical analyses, including paired and independent t-tests, were performed using SPSS version 25. Result: Compared with the control group, the intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in health literacy (N-Gain = 0.61 vs. 0.08, p < 0.001), accompanied by a significantly greater increase in self-efficacy and greater reductions in HbA1c, BMI, and blood pressure (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, 88% of participants actively engaged in peer-support activities, indicating high adherence to the program. These findings suggest that EduDiab-Online is an effective and scalable community-based diabetes education model that integrates digital learning with peer support to improve both behavioral and clinical outcomes. Further studies are recommended to evaluate its long-term effectiveness and applicability to other chronic disease management programs.
