Abstract

The exploration and research abilities of students were substantially enhanced through training in mangrove data collection techniques conducted along the coast of Kendari Bay. The effectiveness of the theoretical sessions and field practice is evidenced by an increase in theoretical understanding scores from 65.8 to 82.4 and practical skills scores from 2.2 to 4.1. The training, which was attended by 45 students, produced a comprehensive database comprising 135 vegetation plots, identification of 12 mangrove species, as well as water quality and substrate data from three locations. In addition to improving technical skills, the training facilitated the formation of study groups and the development of collaborative research proposals, which in turn increased motivation and research collaboration among participants. The resulting data have been submitted to the Kendari City Environmental Agency as a foundation for mangrove management. The success of this program demonstrates that experience-based methodologies are effective in enhancing human resource capacity and supporting the sustainable conservation of mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract

The low level of students’ scientific literacy, particularly in understanding biodiversity concepts and conservation efforts, remains one of the challenges in biology learning at the secondary school level. Learning activities that are predominantly theoretical and do not optimally utilize the surrounding environment as a learning resource result in students’ limited contextual understanding and environmental awareness. Therefore, learning activities that connect biological concepts with real-life environmental conditions are needed, one of which is through the introduction of botany. This community service activity aimed to improve the scientific literacy of Grade X students at SMAN 2 Narmada on biodiversity topics through botany-based learning using a contextual learning approach. The activity was conducted in the form of teaching assistance employing the service-learning method, which included the stages of preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The learning implementation utilized interactive teaching materials and the school environment as learning resources. The evaluation was carried out through botany planting activities in the classroom garden as a form of applying the knowledge gained by the students. The results indicated an improvement in students’ understanding of biodiversity concepts, increased student engagement in the learning process, and the development of environmental awareness. Although several challenges were encountered, such as student absenteeism and a lack of focus among some students, overall, the activity was successfully implemented and had a positive impact on biology learning. This botany introduction activity has the potential to be developed as a sustainable learning strategy to enhance students’ scientific literacy.

Abstract

Gili Gede Indah Tourism Village is one of the leading tourist destinations on the southwest coast of Lombok Island. The visiting tourists are predominantly foreign. Although Gili Gede Tourism Village has the potential of its resources as a tourist attraction, it is not yet supported by the supporting aspect of tourism, namely souvenirs. This village has not yet developed souvenirs as a distinctive souvenir, although there are crafts made from marine waste, they are not yet optimal in terms of marketing, packaging, and product innovation. The lack of innovation, skills, and networks is the reason for the suboptimal presence of typical souvenirs. The purpose of this service is to provide support to Bumdes, tourism business actors, and pokdarwis as the main drivers for optimizing the unique souvenirs of Gili Gede Indah Tourism Village. The activity will begin with an FGD (Focus Group Discussion) to identify existing problems at the service location, followed by socialization and strengthening cooperation in optimizing souvenirs, particularly in product marketing.

Abstract

Farmers in Sumbersalak Village, Ledokombo, Jember Regency still depend on rice as the main commodity in their business. One important component that supports the success of rice cultivation is the availability of quality seeds. One obstacle faced in rice seed production is dormancy. One effort to improve the quality of seeds that have been stored for a long time is to give rice seeds special treatment in the hope of improving germination and early growth. The method used is participatory assistance, including dissemination of information, discussion, and direct practice of seed soaking. The activity was carried out in July 2025 at the Kenconowungu Farmer Group, involving 10 participants. The rice seeds were soaked in a 3% KNO3 solution for 24 hours. The results showed that the KNO3 treatment was effective as an invigoration technique that improved the physiological characteristics of the seeds, which had deteriorated during storage. The application of this technology was proven to increase the germination rate of local rice seeds to be faster and more uniform compared to those without treatment. Additionally, this assistance successfully improved farmers' understanding and independence in managing seeds in a practical and applicable manner.
