Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of implementing the discovery learning (DL) approach on improving students' writing skills in English subjects. The study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design involving pre-tests and post-tests on two groups: a control group and an experimental group. The population of this study comprised 10th-grade students of Hospitality 1 and 2 at SMK N 6 Semarang in the 2024/2025 academic year, with Hospitality 1 as the control group and Hospitality 2 as the experimental group. In the experimental group, students were taught using the discovery learning (DL) approach, while the control group was taught without it. Data were collected through a writing test on recount texts and a closed questionnaire containing 15 questions to measure students' perceptions of the discovery learning approach. The data analysis, conducted using SPSS 27, revealed that the t-value (9.830) was greater than the t-table value (1.849) at a significance level of 0.025 with 27 degrees of freedom. This indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, showing a significant effect of discovery learning on students' writing skills. The questionnaire results demonstrated that students responded positively to this method, stating that discovery learning helped them become more active and engaged in the learning process. In conclusion, implementing the discovery learning (DL) approach significantly improves students' writing skills, making it an effective alternative for enhancing writing abilities in English language learning. The implication of this study suggests that teachers are encouraged to integrate discovery learning into their teaching strategies to foster active student participation and achieve optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using folktales in improving the English speaking skills of students in class VIII of SMPN 1 Gunungsitoli Barat. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study involved 26 students as the main subjects. The results showed that the integration of folktales in learning had a significant impact on students' pronunciation ability, where 60% of them achieved a good score. Folklore not only improves pronunciation, but also eases the teaching and assessment process, and fosters students' interest in learning. Supporting factors such as the use of varied teaching methods and students' interest in local culture also catalysed the success. Comparative analysis showed that students who were active in folklore-based activities had higher levels of fluency and confidence than the less engaged group. However, the study also identified a number of challenges, such as limited learning time and limited available resources, which require further attention. In conclusion, folklore proved to be an effective learning medium in improving students' English speaking skills. In addition, it made a positive contribution to overall learning, by strengthening students' appreciation of local culture while improving the quality of the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are needed to improve students' ability to face life's challenges in the 21st century. The RBL model offers another approach: students are placed as active subjects to improve critical thinking skills. This study aims to systemically design learning by integrating the principles and learning model of RBL to enhance critical thinking skills and investigate the effectiveness of the RBL learning model in improving students' critical thinking skills in various elementary schools. The research method used in this study is pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample of this research was conducted on about 20 fifth-grade students of SDN 03 Pekat. A critical thinking skills test and observation sheet were used to collect data to measure learning activities and analyze data using SPSS 25. The results showed that the difference in mean or average value from pretest (65.15) and posttest (82.7) showed that the RBL model affected students' critical thinking skills. Using RBL, students can be taught to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems. Thus, the RBL model can be used as an alternative learning model to improve critical thinking skills.
