Abstract

Abstract

Background: The integration of digital technology into science laboratories has given rise to the concept of the Smart Laboratory, an Internet of Things (IoT)-based learning space that connects sensors, actuators, and cloud platforms to support real-time, data-driven experimentation. Within the framework of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, the Smart Laboratory is increasingly positioned not merely as a facility but as part of a broader learning ecosystem that links curriculum, pedagogy, infrastructure, and stakeholders. Objectives: This study aims to synthesize empirical and conceptual evidence on how Smart Laboratory-based learning environments contribute to the development of students' science and technology competence, and to map the opportunities and challenges of their implementation, particularly within the Indonesian STEM education context. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guideline. Relevant records were identified through structured searches using combinations of the keywords "smart laboratory", "IoT", "virtual laboratory", "remote laboratory", "STEM education", and "science competence" in international databases and reputable publishers, then screened based on relevance, recency (2014-2026), and methodological clarity. Results: The review indicates that IoT-based and virtual/remote laboratories are consistently associated with improved conceptual understanding, science process skills, and higher-order thinking, while simultaneously fostering technological competencies such as digital literacy, computational thinking, and data-driven reasoning. Implementation success is moderated by teacher digital competence and technology acceptance, infrastructure readiness, and data security and privacy safeguards. Conclusion: Smart Laboratory functions most effectively when designed as an integrated ecosystem-combining sensor-based infrastructure, project-based STEM pedagogy, and institutional support-rather than as an isolated tool, and its adoption in Indonesian schools requires deliberate teacher training, infrastructure investment, and policy alignment with the Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

The absence of a standardized essay item bank for the Petrochemistry course in the Oil and Gas Processing Engineering Diploma (D3) Program at Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Migas has led to an ad hoc test-construction practice with no guaranteed representation across cognitive levels. This study aims to develop an essay item bank for the third-semester Petrochemistry course referring to the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (C1–C6), while analyzing the clarity of instructional construction and the linguistic correctness of each item with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This Research and Development study adapted curriculum-need analysis, blueprint construction, item writing, and AI-assisted quality analysis stages, with 50 essay items distributed across nine Petrochemistry topics as the research object. Data were analyzed descriptively-quantitatively for item distribution and descriptively-qualitatively for construction and language analysis results. The findings show that the 50 essay items were evenly distributed across the six Revised Bloom's Taxonomy levels (C1 8 items, C2 8 items, C3 8 items, C4 9 items, C5 8 items, and C6 9 items) and across nine Petrochemistry topics, ranging from Introduction to the Petrochemical Industry to Petrochemical Industry Equipment. The AI-based analysis indicated that all items used clear operational verbs appropriate to the targeted cognitive level and complied with standard Indonesian language rules and sentence effectiveness, confirming the item bank's feasibility as an evaluation instrument. This essay item bank represents the first standardized evaluation instrument for the Petrochemistry course at Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Migas and is recommended for replication in other courses within oil-and-gas vocational education.

Abstract

Cognitive ability is one of the developmental aspects that is essential to optimize from an early age, since this period represents a golden age that shapes the quality of development at later life stages. One learning approach considered suitable for the characteristics of young children is the simple science experiment, an activity that uses safe and readily available materials. This article aims to conceptually examine how the implementation of simple science experiments can develop the cognitive abilities of young children. The method used is a library research approach, analyzing and synthesizing relevant scholarly articles, both theoretical and empirical. The findings indicate that simple science experiments, such as the self-inflating balloon experiment, the floating-sinking egg experiment, soap bubbles, and color mixing, provide concrete learning experiences that align with Piaget's preoperational stage of cognitive development. Such activities have been shown to foster children's understanding of cause-and-effect relationships, classification skills, simple problem solving, curiosity, and observational ability. The success of implementation is influenced by teacher creativity, the availability of tools and materials, and a supportive learning environment. This study recommends that early childhood educators design simple science experiment activities in a structured and sustainable manner as part of a cognitive development strategy.
