Abstract

The elderly is the final phase in the human life cycle which is characterized by a decrease in body functions, such as weakness and balance disorders, which can increase the risk of falling and decrease independence. Therefore, promotive and preventive efforts through physical exercise are needed to maintain fitness and reduce the risk of falling. One of the exercises that has proven effective is the Square Stepping Exercise (SSE), which is a step pattern exercise from simple too complex to training postural and cognitive balance for the elderly. This community service program was carried out at the Ngudi Waras Elderly Posyandu, Senden, Tohudan, Colomadu, involving 30 elderly people aged 60-75 years. The activities carried out included counseling, demonstrations, SSE practices, and evaluation using dynamic balance test before and after interventions. The instruments used were in the form of participant characteristics forms and balance time test. Data analysis was carried out in a descriptive manner based on the BMI category due to the limited number of samples and activity design. Most participants were in the BMI category of overweight (13 people), followed by normal (11 people) and Underweight (6 People). The average time of the dynamic balance test showed improvement in all BMI categories after the implementation of SSE. These result show that SSE can improve the dynamic balance of the elderly without being affected by nutritional status. SSE is effective as a simple exercise that can be applied as a self-directed program at home to improve balance and contribute to the prevention of fall risk in the elderly.

Abstract

Teacher well-being is a crucial determinant of educational quality, yet many educators particularly those working abroad. They face challenges that compromise their physical and psychological health. This community engagement program (PKM) conducted by Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa) at Sekolah Indonesia Makkah (SIM), Saudi Arabia, aimed to enhance teacher wellness through integrated fitness and counselling training. Using a hybrid model that combined online lectures and offline practice, 23 teachers participated in structured physical exercise sessions, health education, and guidance and counselling workshops. Baseline assessments indicated that 78% of participants rarely engaged in exercise and 65% were dissatisfied with their physical condition. Post-intervention data revealed substantial improvements: 87% of teachers began exercising weekly, reported higher energy and motivation levels, and demonstrated greater awareness of wellness in teaching. Counselling competence also improved markedly, with 90% of participants able to apply preventive and developmental guidance strategies in classrooms. Qualitative feedback emphasized increased collegiality, emotional resilience, and a stronger sense of community, culminating in the establishment of a Teacher Fitness Club as a sustainable outcome. The study concludes that integrating physical and psychological well-being training strengthens teachers’ professional capacity, fosters holistic education, and exemplifies the transformative role of universities in global community partnership.

Abstract

The community service program entitled Building Reflective Literacy for the Writer Community in East Java Schools through Book Review Activities and Kartini-Themed Poetry Workshops aims to improve reflective literacy and creative expression skills among educators and literacy practitioners. This program is motivated by the limited space for teachers and the writing community in schools to develop reflective literacy practices that integrate cultural values and gender awareness. The main purpose of this activity is to strengthen participants' understanding of Kartini's emancipation spirit through literary exploration, especially by associating historical reflection with the context of today's education. The implementation of the program includes two main activities: a book review of Kartini's Trilogy which presents authors and academic speakers, and a workshop on writing reflective poems inspired by Kartini's values of struggle. The methods used include participatory dialogue, collaborative learning, and creative writing practices, which allow participants to interact critically with the text while expressing personal reflection through literary works. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' awareness of gender equality issues, literary appreciation, and creative writing skills. In addition, this activity encourages collaboration between schools, teachers, students, and literacy communities in East Java, forming a sustainable network for future literacy development. The novelty of this program lies in the integration of cultural heritage, reflective pedagogy, and creative expression as a means of community empowerment. Overall, this activity shows that reflective literacy can be an effective forum to strengthen the value of education, cultural understanding, and social cohesion within the framework of sustainable community development.

Abstract

The Mandarin language corpus has become an essential resource for enhancing translator competence, particularly amid the growing industrial cooperation between Indonesia and China. The availability of technical vocabulary sources remains limited, creating a gap between academic proficiency and the demands of professional translation in industry. This community service program aims to develop an online corpus of Mandarin industrial vocabulary as an effort to provide standardized terminology resources based on authentic data. The implementation methods include mapping user needs, collecting vocabulary from 30 undergraduate theses and student internship reports from 2021–2024, developing the digital platform, and conducting training on its use. A total of 4,221 vocabulary items were compiled and integrated into the corpus, equipped with search features based on hanzi, pinyin, and definitions. The results show that the corpus platform improves the accuracy of technical document translation, accelerates terminology retrieval, and strengthens both thematic and instrumental competencies of translators. This digital corpus has proven effective in supporting translation needs in academic and industrial settings.
