Abstract

This study examined the cognitive aspects and competencies of the Indonesian Muslim diaspora in Southeast Asia through a community empowerment program to preserve Islamic heritage. Muslim communities in Southeast Asia have a historical relationship in the process of da'wah, Islamic culture, and the transmission of knowledge. Historical heritage in the form of mosques, tombs, kingdoms, and religious ceremonies is a potential for halal tourism and a challenge for the cultural conservation process. In this regard, the Indonesian Muslim diaspora plays a significant role in efforts to maintain Islamic heritage in Southeast Asia due to their shared culture, traditions, and language. Enhancing the diaspora's cognitive aspects and competencies was a priority for assistance. Therefore, various activities were implemented to improve their ability to document relevant information about Islamic heritage. This endeavor employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology to support the Indonesian diaspora residing in Malaysia, Thailand, and Brunei Darussalam. The mentoring program included Focused Group Discussions about Islamic heritage and assistance in improving skills related to data collection and writing about Islamic heritage and Arabic Pegon writing. Following the mentoring activities, notable improvements were observed in the cognitive aspects of the assisted subjects concerning historical mosques and Islamic kingdoms (13.3%), Islamic museums (21.43%), Islamic traditions (35.71%), and Islamic arts (42%), tombs (38.46%), and haul ceremonies (84%). Additionally, there was increased competency in searching and writing Islamic heritage information (13.3%) and Arabic Pegon writing (28.57%) after the mentoring. To ensure program sustainability, the diaspora actively disseminates service outcomes through online directories. Furthermore, ongoing collaboration is fostered through community-based cultural initiatives, which contribute to preserving Islamic history.

Abstract

The high demand for poultry production has recently prompted members of the Mbesi Chicken Farmers Group in Kedungrejo Village, Rembang Regency, to focus on increasing productivity by optimizing the construction of their chicken coops. The closed-house system, suitable for the local environment and weather conditions, has been identified as the most appropriate type of poultry coop. However, the construction process is often outsourced, resulting in frequent design changes and price increases passed on to the breeders. To address this issue, the present Community Service (PkM) activity was carried out to assist farmers in creating design drawings for closed-house poultry coop buildings. The Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, involving direct mentoring, was employed to facilitate farmers in the process. The outcome of this community service was the submission of detailed design drawings for closed-house poultry coop buildings. An evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-testassessments, revealing that 80% of participants could read and comprehend the design drawings for planning a closed-house chicken coop system. Accordingly, the findings indicated an improvement in the partner's competence in interpreting design drawings.

Abstract

Madrasa education is a compelling issue in a Muslim minority country like the Philippines. Amidst the rapid pace of modernization, secular education enjoys strong government support, while Islamic teaching often remains underemphasized. However, the madrasa education system in the Philippines has begun to make positive strides through mutual learning and exchanging experiences with neighboring countries, such as Indonesia. Likewise, the present intensive and participatory assistantship program aimed to elucidate the efforts to promote religious moderation and enhance the educational quality within selected madrasas in Mindanao, the Philippines. The Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, combined with direct mentoring, was employed in this endeavor. Furthermore, the program was designed to address three key objectives: (1) strengthening religious moderation within madrasa education, (2) preparing professional teachers for madrasa education, and (3) enhancing the management of madrasa education. In summary, the outcomes of this program have the potential to contribute to the adoption of the Indonesian Islamic education model within the Muslim community in the Philippines.

Abstract

Adolescence is important for students because it transitions from childhood to adulthood. Knowledge about changes in adolescence, especially adolescents in Islamic boarding schools regarding adolescent reproductive health, is still low, so it needs to be improved. This service aims to increase the knowledge of service partners, especially students in Islamic boarding schools, regarding adolescent reproductive health. This devotion used the ABCD method, which consists of five stages: inculturation, discovery, design, definition, and reflection. This service program is carried out in July–August 2022. Service partners are students from classes X, XI, and XII. The service program is carried out with a learning model of team games tournaments (TGT) assisted by crossword puzzles and learning videos. Service data were obtained using pre- and post-tests regarding adolescent reproductive health. The data obtained are analyzed qualitatively and descriptively. The service results showed that counselling activities using crossword puzzle media and learning videos increased the knowledge of service partners by an average of 8.41.

Abstract

Farmers' knowledge about soil ecology, which is a key factor in increasing the productivity of agricultural products, needs to be evaluated considering that various counseling efforts to increase agricultural yields have not shown satisfactory results. Farmers still unequally manage farmland, providing excessive chemical fertilizers without regard to soil ecology. The purpose of this education is to evaluate the knowledge of the Women's Farmers Group (WFG) before and after conducting soil ecology education based on Islamic science. The subjects of this education were 15 members of WFG Bunga Padi, Jorong Kawai, Nagari Batu Bulek, Lintau Buo Utara, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The community-based research (CBR) approach is used in this educational activity. The stages of educational activities start from socialization, laying the basis of the research and the research design, providing pretests and materials, gathering information and analyzing data on biological factors, capillarity of groundwater, water holding capacity, soil aeration, soil fertility, and soil pH, and the evaluation (post-test). The results show an increase in knowledge and understanding among WFG Bunga Padi members after Islamic science-based soil ecology education. It is hoped that, over time, their mindset in managing farmland will be balanced, with less reliance on chemical fertilizers and more emphasis on soil ecology. As a result, Islamic science-based soil ecology education could have a role in improving farmland and laying the foundation for organic farming.
