Abstract

This research is motivated by the limited use of literary works, especially short story anthologies, as a medium for revealing the author's worldview in the context of literary learning. The focus of this research is the short story anthology Tukar Takdir by Valiant Budi, which is considered representative of contemporary Indonesian society's collective consciousness. The purpose of this research is to describe the author's worldview in the anthology by examining the story structure, character conflicts, and cultural symbols used. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through document analysis, observation, and interviews, and validity is established through theoretical triangulation. Data analysis is carried out using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and result verification. The main data of this research are the texts of the short stories in Tukar Takdir and supporting documentation from the author and readers. The results of this research show that the author's worldview is reflected in the character conflicts and the storyline that depicts the dialectic between individual fate and social structure. This finding confirms that literary works are not only aesthetic but also represent ideology and social awareness, serving as a medium for critical learning. In conclusion, Tukar Takdir is not just an anthology of short stories but rather a representation of the author's worldview, relevant to contemporary social problems, and with great potential to support reflective, dialogical, and transformative literary learning.

Abstract

Village names in Indonesia, especially in the Aceh region, hold meanings that are not only geographical, but also historical, social, and spiritual. This research raises the main issue related to the lack of in-depth studies on the toponymic meaning of village names in Lhoknga District, Aceh Besar, which has not been explored anthropolinguistically. The purpose of this research is to describe the origin and naming aspects of the village by exploring the cultural, historical, and linguistic meanings contained in the names. This research used a qualitative approach with an anthropolinguistic-based descriptive-analytical method, and data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and archival and oral tradition documentation. The data were analyzed through a multidimensional approach that combines semantic, morphological, and social and cultural context aspects. The results show that village names such as Cot Bak U, Ujong Tanoh, and Lam Puuk not only function as location markers, but also represent value systems, historical narratives, and the community's spiritual relationship with its environment. Village naming has proven to be an important part of intangible cultural heritage that strengthens local identity and becomes a source of community knowledge. This research concludes that toponymy in Lhoknga reflects the close relationship between language, culture and history, and has strategic value in cultural preservation, education and community development.

Abstract

Pantun, as an integral part of the Tamiang Malay traditional wedding ceremony, has complex cultural meanings, but its existence is often only understood superficially and aesthetically. The main problem in this study is the lack of in-depth documentation of the semantic meaning of pantun, especially in terms of its denotative and connotative aspects, which hinders efforts to preserve this oral tradition. This study aims to describe and analyze the denotative and connotative meanings of pantun used in traditional Tamiang Malay wedding ceremonies to preserve local culture. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, and audiovisual documentation of wedding ceremonies. The data were analyzed using Roland Barthes' lexical semantics and semiotics theories to explore the literal and symbolic structures in the pantun. The study results show that the Tamiang traditional pantun not only functions as a medium of ritual communication but also as a representation of local values such as honor, politeness, gender equality, and obedience to traditional norms. The connotative meaning of pantun serves as a collective instrument in shaping intergenerational cultural awareness. This study concludes that traditional pantun has excellent potential as a medium for preserving cultural identity, so it is important to continue to revive, document, and introduce it widely, both in academic and social contexts. This study also enriches the field of cultural semantics and provides a theoretical and practical basis for research on oral traditions in other indigenous communities.

Abstract

The implementation of inclusive education at the kindergarten level still faces significant challenges, especially in the aspect of instructional communication between teachers and students with special needs. This gap shows that conventional teaching strategies have not been able to address the complexity of interactions in inclusive classrooms fully. This study aims to analyze the instructional communication strategies implemented by teachers in Samarinda State Kindergarten 1 using a rhetorical approach. This approach focuses on how teachers build credibility (ethos), touch the emotional side of students (pathos), and convey messages with appropriate logic (logos). This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and principals, and documentation of learning activities. Data were analyzed thematically to reveal patterns of effective communication in the context of inclusive teaching. The results show that teachers who consciously adopt a rhetorical approach can build stronger communicative relationships, increase student participation, and create a more humane and inclusive learning environment. The conclusion of this study confirms that rhetoric-based teaching strategies are not only relevant but also effective in addressing communication challenges in classrooms with diverse learning needs. The findings recommend the integration of rhetorical approaches in teacher training and inclusive education policy in Indonesia.

Abstract

The introduction of local wisdom is essential for enhancing foreign learners’ language skills and cultural awareness, as well as for helping them adapt and avoid culture shock during their stay in Indonesia. This study aims to explore Indonesian local wisdom through arts and culture in the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) at Surabaya European School (SES). A qualitative method was employed with 17 intermediate-level BIPA students as participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and a literature review relevant to local wisdom, Indonesian arts and culture, and BIPA learning. The findings reveal that BIPA learning at SES takes place in an interactive and meaningful manner through the introduction of local wisdom and its values via music, visual arts, dance, traditional performances, “cultural corner” activities, and the introduction of Indonesian culinary culture. Cultural activities within BIPA learning provide learners with knowledge, skills, and an understanding of Indonesian local wisdom values. BIPA learning not only focuses on language but also offers learners an in-depth cultural experience. Local wisdom thus serves as a bridge for learners to understand both the language and culture of Indonesia.

Abstract

This research examines the visual image-based political communication strategy on the TikTok platform by highlighting the “gemoy” symbol as part of a political campaign aimed at the younger generation. This phenomenon shows a shift in the way political messages are delivered from a rational-informative approach to an affective-visual approach that utilizes popular culture. The main problem in this research lies in how political meaning is formed through the symbolization of the “gemoy” image and to what extent it affects young people's political involvement. The purpose of this research is to identify the various meanings of young audiences towards image-based political communication and explain the dynamics of symbol meaning in the context of digital culture. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study, relying on data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, observation of TikTok content, and visual documentation. Data were obtained from interactions with TikTok users aged 17-25 as well as analysis of political content using the “gemoy" representation. The results show that political images are not only passively consumed but also actively interpreted and reproduced by young audiences based on their affections, identities, and digital lifestyles. In conclusion, political communication in the era of social media is heavily influenced by the power of visual symbols and emotional interactivity, not just by substantial arguments. This research contributes theoretically to the expansion of the concept of digital political communication and practically encourages the strengthening of political literacy based on popular culture and algorithmic media.

Abstract

This research aims to integrate Linguistic Functional Systems (SFL) and Visual Grammar in genre-based pedagogy to encourage EFL students' critical reading of multimodal texts. The main problem raised in this study is the lack of students' understanding of multimodal texts, often found in English as a foreign language (EFL) education. The main objective of this study was to explore how incorporating SFL and visual grammar can improve students' critical reading abilities of the text. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design that involves multimodal text analysis, classroom observation, and interviews with teachers and students. The research data was obtained through direct observation of learning interactions in the EFL classroom, multimodal text analysis, and student responses regarding the learning. The results show that the integration of SFL and visual grammar is effective in enriching students' understanding of structure and meaning in multimodal texts, as well as improving their critical skills. The conclusions of this study confirm that a genre-based pedagogical approach that combines SFL and visual grammar can strengthen students' critical reading, making them better prepared to understand and analyze multimodal texts in greater depth.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of understanding language as a medium for shaping social values and cultural identity in the Bastem community, South Sulawesi. The Rampanan Kapa' traditional wedding ceremony is not only a ritual for uniting two families, but also an arena for symbolic communication imbued with values of politeness, spirituality, and social solidarity. The main problem of this research is the form, meaning, and function of the speech acts used in each stage of the ceremony, and how these utterances reflect local cultural values and the politeness system of the Bastem community. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnopragmatic approach, which connects the analysis of linguistic forms with the sociocultural context. Data were obtained through direct observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and recording of speech acts used during the traditional procession. The results show four main types of speech acts—representative, expressive, directive, and declarative—that function to regulate social relations, affirm customary norms, and mark the social legitimacy of the marriage. Customary speech also serves as a means of transmitting moral values such as deliberation, politeness, and respect for ancestors. The research conclusion confirms that the Bastem traditional language is not just a means of communication, but rather a social and spiritual mechanism that connects humans with their communities and cultures, as well as being a means of preserving the collective identity of local communities.

Abstract

Toponymy or place naming not only functions as a location marker, but also represents a community's linguistic structure and cultural values. However, studies on toponymy at the dusun level, especially in Labuhan Haji Village, Labuhan Haji Sub-district, East Lombok Regency, are still minimal. This study aims to describe the form of linguistic units and the meaning of toponymy of hamlets in the Region. The method used is descriptive qualitative with an anthropological approach, which combines structural linguistic analysis and cultural meaning studies. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and oral and visual documentation, which were then analyzed using morphological and semantic models. The results show that the names of hamlets are formed through complex linguistic units, such as affixation, reduplication, and compositum, which represent geographical conditions, historical events, and symbolic values of the Sasak people. Each toponymy contains layers of meaning that are not only descriptive but also functional in maintaining the local community's collective memory, social structure, and cultural identity. This research provides theoretical contributions to the development of formal and contextual linguistics-based toponymy studies and practical contributions in preserving intangible cultural heritage through language documentation. The findings also open up space for the development of a low-content curriculum.
