Abstract

21st-century Biology learning emphasizes the importance of developing critical thinking skills, collaboration, and conceptual understanding as key competencies for students. However, learning about viruses and their roles still faces challenges due to the abstract nature of the concepts and the dominance of memorization-based approaches. This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing the Students Team Achievement Division (STAD) and Numbered Heads Together (NHT) models based on the Labyrinth approach on students’ critical thinking skills, collaboration abilities, and conceptual understanding in vocational high schools. The results showed that the integration of STAD, NHT, and the Labyrinth approach significantly improved all three aspects. The improvement was reflected in students’ analytical abilities, group interactions, and understanding of virus concepts based on statistical tests conducted before and after the learning process. These findings indicate that exploratory-based cooperative learning can create active, contextual, and student-centered learning experiences. The novelty of this study lies in the integrative learning design that simultaneously optimizes cognitive and social aspects.

Abstract

Twenty-first-century chemistry learning requires conceptual mastery and the ability to apply concepts to real-world problems, while the mole concept is complex because it involves relationships among amount of substance, mass, particles, volume, molarity, and chemical equations, causing students to rely on memorization. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) with the Labyrinth approach on students’ mastery of the mole concept. The study employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest–posttest control group design involving 60 tenth-grade students, and the data were analyzed using paired-sample t-test, independent-sample t-test, and N-gain. The results showed that the mean conceptual mastery score of the experimental group increased from 25.52 to 62.70, with an N-gain of 0.52, while the control group increased from 31.97 to 57.03, with an N-gain of 0.39, and the difference in improvement between the groups was significant at the 0.05 level. These findings confirm that PBL based on STEAM with the Labyrinth approach is more effective than conventional learning, with its novelty lying in the integration of cognitive, social, and exploratory activities to strengthen students’ mastery of the mole concept actively and meaningfully.

Abstract

Twenty-first-century science education requires creativity through active, contextual, and problem-solving-oriented learning experiences; however, science learning at the junior high school level requires strategies that connect conceptual mastery with students’ abilities to generate ideas, select alternatives, design solutions, and develop products. This study aims to analyze the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) learning using Labyrinth media and the improvement of students’ creativity through a pre-experimental One Group Pretest–Posttest design involving 20 students. Data were collected using a creativity rubric covering fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration, and were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, Paired Sample t-Test, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed an improvement in creativity after the intervention, with the Paired Sample t-Test producing a significance value of <0.05 and the N-Gain indicating a moderate level of improvement, demonstrating that the integration of STEAM and Labyrinth media encouraged students to observe problems, generate ideas, try strategies, design solutions, and actively evaluate outcomes. The novelty of this study lies in utilizing the Labyrinth as a platform for STEAM activities incorporating problems, choices, pathways, collaboration, and creative activities, thereby offering an innovative learning design for developing junior high school students’ creativity.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of making teaching materials that are able to awaken students' 6C skills to face the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. The 6C skills referred to in this study include communication skills, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, citizenship/culture, and character education/connectivity). The purpose of this research is to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of interactive mathematics teaching materials on probability materials developed in improving the ability to conceptual understanding and critical thinking. The research method used is this development research refers to the 4D model developed by Thiagarajan which includes the stages of define, design, development, and dissemination. The research was conducted at SMA Islamic Village, Kelapa Dua, Tangerang in class XII IPA. Before the teaching materials developed are implemented for students, validation of the teaching materials is carried out which includes validation of material experts, language experts, media experts, and evaluation experts. The results obtained from this study are the teaching materials developed are declared feasible and ready to be used. Based on the results of the analysis using descriptive statistical techniques, the validity of the teaching materials developed is very valid.

Abstract

Science learning on heat transfer continues to face challenges in developing students' critical thinking skills and fostering Joyful Learning. The integration of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), the STEAM approach, and the LABIRIN learning approach offers the potential to provide more active, contextual, and meaningful learning experiences. This study aimed to analyze the effect of PBL integrated with STEAM-LABIRIN on students' critical thinking skills and Joyful Learning in heat transfer learning within the context of the greenhouse effect. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Matching Only Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design. The participants consisted of two seventh-grade classes at a junior high school. The experimental class received PBL integrated with STEAM-LABIRIN, while the control class received PBL without the integration. Data were collected using a critical thinking skills test, a Joyful Learning questionnaire, and classroom observations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normalized gain (N-gain), independent samples t-test, and the Mann–Whitney U test according to the characteristics of the data. The results showed that the implementation of PBL integrated with STEAM-LABIRIN significantly improved students' critical thinking skills compared with PBL without the integration. Meanwhile, Joyful Learning tended to be higher in the experimental class, although the difference was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that PBL integrated with STEAM-LABIRIN has the potential to serve as an alternative science learning approach that enhances students' critical thinking skills while fostering Joyful Learning.

Abstract

Curiosity is a fundamental character that drives student engagement in abstract physics learning. This study aims to compare students' curiosity between classes implementing Brain Based Learning with Role Playing strategy (BBL-RP) and Problem Based Learning (PBL) on Work and Energy topic. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 53 tenth-grade students at SMA Trinitas Bandung, with 26 students in the experimental class and 27 students in the control class. The instrument was an 8-item curiosity questionnaire adapted from the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II with two dimensions: Stretching and Embracing. Data were analyzed using Independent t-test and Cohen's d effect size. The results showed significant differences in total curiosity (t(51) = 2.066, p = 0.044) and Embracing dimension (t(51) = 2.335, p = 0.024) with moderate effect sizes (d = 0.57 and d = 0.64). However, the Stretching dimension showed no significant difference (t(51) = 1.179, p = 0.244) with a small effect size (d = 0.32). These findings indicate that BBL-RP is more effective in enhancing students' curiosity, particularly in the aspect of embracing challenges and uncertainty. Practically, physics teachers are advised to integrate role playing strategies in learning to optimize students' emotional and cognitive engagement.
