Abstract

Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is one of the diseases that often affects toddlers, especially in densely populated environments that have a high risk of transmission. Purpose: this study aims to analyze the risk factors for the occurrence of ARI in children under five who live in an environment with high population density. Methods: the method used is observational with cross-sectional design on 50 toddlers purposively selected in densely populated areas. Data collection was conducted through interviews using questionnaires and observation of Home environmental conditions. Univariate analysis was used to describe the characteristics of respondents, while bivariate analysis with chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between risk factors with the incidence of ARI. Results: the results showed that exposure to cigarette smoke in the Home (p = 0.005), inadequate ventilation (p = 0.002), and density of occupancy (p = 0.020) were significantly associated with the incidence of ARI in toddlers. Implications: the implication of this study is the need for increased family education on the importance of a healthy home environment and reduced exposure to secondhand smoke to prevent ARI. Conclusion: environmental factors and family behavior are the main determinants of ARI risk in toddlers in densely populated environments, so environmental health interventions and health education are needed.

Abstract

Drug-Related Problems (DRPs) remain a significant issue in geriatric pharmacotherapy, particularly among older adults with multiple chronic conditions and complex medication regimens. The MedRiPh (Medication Risk in Pharmacotherapy) scoring model has been introduced to identify patients at higher risk of medication related harm, yet its usefulness in Indonesian primary care has not been well evaluated. This cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2024 involving 100 geriatric patients aged ≥60 years selected using purposive sampling. MedRiPh scores were calculated using validated criteria, and DRPs were identified based on the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE) version 9.1 system. Statistical analysis included the Shapiro Wilk test, Spearman correlation, and linear regression. A total of 412 DRPs were recorded, with drug interactions, dosing errors, and duplicate therapies being the most common. A strong correlation was found between MedRiPh scores and DRPs (r = 0.82, p < 0.001). These results indicate that MedRiPh may be useful for improving medication safety in geriatric primary care.

Abstract

The rapid adoption of telemedicine has expanded hospital pharmacists’ roles, particularly in urban areas of developing countries such as Indonesia. However, evidence on pharmacists’ telemedicine-related competency gaps remains limited. This study aimed to develop and validate a hospital-specific instrument to assess such gaps. A methodological design was employed, including instrument development, expert content validation, pilot testing, and psychometric evaluation. The instrument covers six domains: digital health literacy, clinical pharmacy competence in telemedicine, communication skills, legal and ethical awareness, interprofessional collaboration, and telepharmacy service management. Validation involved 210 hospital pharmacists from urban Indonesian hospitals. Exploratory factor analysis confirmed a six-factor structure explaining 72.4% of the variance, with strong internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.89). Unlike existing telepharmacy readiness tools, this instrument specifically captures multidimensional competency gaps relevant to hospital-based telemedicine practice. The largest gaps were observed in legal–ethical competencies and digital health literacy. This instrument can support workforce assessment and targeted competency-based training for hospital pharmacists in Indonesia.

Abstract

Consumption of sugar-sweetened packaged beverages among elementary school children continues to increase and may contribute to various health problems, including kidney damage. Limited knowledge regarding the health risks of sugary beverages is one of the factors contributing to high consumption among children. This community service program aimed to improve students’ knowledge about the dangers of packaged sugary drinks on kidney health through health education activities conducted at SD Ar-Ridha, Biru-Biru District, Deli Serdang Regency. The activity was carried out on November 23, 2024, involving 30 elementary school students. The methods used included interactive lectures, discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Educational materials covered types of sugary packaged beverages, added sugar content, kidney function, the effects of excessive sugar intake, and kidney disease prevention efforts. The results demonstrated an increase in participants’ knowledge levels after the educational intervention. The percentage of students categorized as having good knowledge increased from 20.0% during the pre-test to 80.0% during the post-test, while the poor knowledge category decreased from 46.7% to 3.3%. These findings indicate that interactive health education methods are effective in improving students’ understanding of the importance of limiting sugary packaged beverage consumption to maintain kidney health from an early age.
