Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the application of artificial intelligence (AI), namely ChatGPT, for educational purposes. However, EFL students' insights of the ethical use of using ChatGPT in academic writing remain unexplored. The purpose of this study is to reveal the EFL students' perspectives on the ethical use of Chat GPT in academic writing. Data were obtained from 54 EFL students who have taken academic writing course by using a Likert Scale questionnaire, with a focus on ethical issues such as plagiarism, academic integrity, over-reliance on ChatGPT, data biases, and unclear guidelines. The findings show that students significantly concerns about the ethical use of ChatGPT, though a small number remain unaware of these issues. The study recommends incorporating ethical education regarding ChatGPT into academic curricula. Lecturers or teachers should focus on helping students understand the ethical challenges related to the application of ChatGPT, such as plagiarism and bias. Additionally, clear guidelines for ChatGPT use in academic writing should be established to promote academic integrity and responsible ChatGPT use.

Abstract

Gender is a significant social construct that influences various aspects of life, including education and media representation. This study investigates gender representation in the New Frontiers 2 English textbook for Grade 8 students at SMP Swasta Methodist Tanjung Morawa. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Using Logsdon’s (1985) framework, which identifies six aspects of gender representation, the study analyzes the prevalence and portrayal of male and female characters in terms of pictures, mentions, roles, games, role models, and naming patterns. The findings reveal imbalances in representation, with males dominating leadership and technical roles, while females are more often linked to descriptive or emotional contexts. This highlights the need for equitable gender portrayals in textbooks to foster inclusive and unbiased learning environments. The study emphasizes the importance of critically evaluating educational materials to ensure they promote gender equality, aligning with Indonesia’s commitment to creating equitable learning opportunities.

Abstract

Abstract

The phenomena of language have become a sociosemiotic issue. Many parties were joining the election. To win the election, they used attributes as a tool to campaign, such as posters, ballyhoos, and banners that hung on the side of the roads. The content of the posters included the identity and picture of the legislative candidate and the party's name, and they used political jargon. To express their identity or goal of the party, to find out the meaning of political jargon, and to understand its sociosemiotic interpretation. By using the descriptive qualitative method. Using Halliday's and Pterce’s theories, the result is that political jargon has a deep meaning and sociosemiotic interpretation. The heuristic function is not found in the function of language analysis in political jargon. Abstract

This research focuses on a semiotic analysis of the logo and directional signs at the PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Medan Station. Utilizing Peirce's theory, this study identifies nine semiotic sign elements emerging from the analysis, with symbols dominating as the most frequently occurring element. The logo of PT KAI Medan, characterized by the use of dark blue color and a line crossing the letter "A," symbolically represents stability, professionalism, and reliability of the company, while directional signs within the company's environment are strategically positioned to provide clear information to station users. This research provides a profound understanding of the use of semiotic signs in assisting station users' navigation and offers a foundation for further research on the effectiveness of semiotic sign usage in the context of public transportation and its impact on user experience.
