Abstract

English is a foreign language studied in schools and is one of the compulsory subjects. However, a problem occurs in its implementation: the tendency to learn English using a focused memorization method. This can hinder English learning, focusing on the concept that language is part of culture, not just a series of memorized words. One learning method that can be used is by implementing humor. Humor serves as a bridge between teachers and students to create a more relaxed and comfortable classroom environment. This research aims to investigate the source of English Learning materials in the form of jokes from Stand-Up Comedians and ensure their use in English learning routines. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative, using the observation method. The research sample consists of 25 videos containing jokes obtained from English Stand-Up Comedians' TikTok user accounts. The data was then analyzed to identify the types of jokes used in each video and their use in English learning. The results show that the type of joke widely used in the content is Ridicule; however, the suitable joke techniques for use in English learning in the classroom are Politeness Strategy and Paralanguage. Kata Kunci: Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris; stand-up comedy; teknik lelucon; TikTok.

Abstract

Abstract. Semiotics is the study of how a sign or symbol is used to produce meaning. This research aims to describe the denotation meaning, connotation meaning, and myth contained in the advertisement of Skintific Indonesia products. The analysis uses Barthes' theory. This research focuses on the exploration of visual and verbal elements in advertisements. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data was taken from the Youtube platform. The results showed that Skintific Indonesia advertisements have visual signs and verbal signs. In the denotation meaning, there are elements such as product, model, color, and text that explicitly describe the product as brightening, anti-acne, moisturizing, and others. In the connotation meaning, there are visual designs that are explicitly meaningful to give an impression of the product and also provide benefits from the manufacturer. In this research, no myths were found. Skintific products are considered an important part of achieving grooming style. In this way the author uses Barthes' theory, revealing the meanings hidden in the visual and verbal used in the advertisement. It can be understood how the Skintific Indonesia brand can attract the attention of wider community and how the advertisement uses verbal/words used to explain products associated with certain values such as natural beauty, long-lasting, healthy, and has no side effects in its use. This research also reveals important meanings hidden in Skintific Indonesia product advertisements and how semiotic elements can be used to create a positive relationship between brands and consumers. Keywords: Semiotic; Denotative; Connotative; Myth; Products advertisements.

Abstract

This study analyzed the presuppositions in the song lyrics of Hendry Moodie’s album to uncover deeper meanings and emotional nuances in his music. The research focused on five selected songs: "Drunk Text," "Orbit," "Pick Up the Phone," "You Were There for Me," and "Closure." Using qualitative content analysis, presuppositions were categorized based on Levinson’s and Yule’s frameworks, including existential, factive, lexical, structural, non-factive, and counterfactual types. The analysis revealed the distribution of presupposition types as follows: "Drunk Text" (15% existential, 20% factive, 20% lexical, 20% structural, 10% non-factive, 15% counterfactual), "Orbit" (20% existential, 20% factive, 20% lexical, 20% structural, 10% non-factive, 10% counterfactual), "Pick Up the Phone" (20% existential, 20% factive, 20% lexical, 20% structural, 10% non-factive, 10% counterfactual), "You Were There for Me" (20% existential, 20% factive, 20% lexical, 20% structural, 10% non-factive, 10% counterfactual), and "Closure" (15% existential, 20% factive, 20% lexical, 20% structural, 10% non-factive, 15% counterfactual). The findings indicated that Moodie’s use of presuppositions enriched the depth of his lyrics, guiding listeners toward specific interpretations and emotional responses. By embedding implicit assumptions, Moodie enhanced the narrative and emotional resonance of his songs, fostering a deeper connection with his audience. This research contributed to a better understanding of how linguistic devices in song lyrics influence listener perception and engagement. It provided new insights into the relationship between language and emotion in music, demonstrating the power of presupposition in shaping the emotional impact of lyrics.
