Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the integration of Qur’anic verses and physical science concepts in Indonesian high school physics textbooks, focusing on the interpretation of lightning through QS. Hud:67. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and critical content analysis, this research combines semiotic theory from Roland Barthes and Charles S. Peirce, alongside a comparative exegesis (tafsir muqaran) of Ibn Kathir, Al-Alusi, and Tantawi Jauhari. The findings reveal that interpreting the word ṣayḥah (الصيحة) as “sound wave” in the textbook neglects its theological and linguistic dimensions. This misinterpretation violates the principles of Qur’anic hermeneutics and constructs a myth that the Qur’an contains explicit modern scientific theories. The study concludes that a proper integration between science and Islam must be grounded in valid interpretative methodology and semiotic awareness. It offers a conceptual contribution toward developing a more rigorous, hermeneutical, and ethical model of Islam-science integration.

Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of maturity and its relation to marriage goals through Tafsir Al-Wajiz by Wahbah az-Zuhaili and Tafsir Karimir-Rahman by Abdurrahman as-Sa‘di, focusing on key Quranic verses. Using thematic library research and Fazlur Rahman’s Double Movement theory, it finds Wahbah emphasizes biological and intellectual maturity tied to financial readiness, while As-Sa‘di highlights spiritual and moral maturity for building a strong Islamic family. The study concludes that maturity for marriage in Islam includes biological, psychological, social, and economic factors, informing Islamic legal policies on ideal marriage age based on maqāṣid asy-syarī‘ah principles.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the symbols of slavery in the Qur'an, the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes and its relation to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods and approaches with the analysis of Roland Barthes' semiotic theory that a symbol is a sign that is surrounded by other signs so that it becomes clearer. There are two stages: the first stage is called the linguistic system, and the second stage is called the mythical system. Myth, in Barthes' view, is assumed to be a system of markers built on three things signifier, signified and sign. The results of the study show that the symbol of Abdun and Amah as human beings who have rights and obligations, the symbol of Raqabah is a valuable item that must be paid, in the sense that it must be liberated or liberated and the symbol of Ma Malakat Ayman as a halal biological channel, a companion who is allowed to marry, and a human being who has rights. As for the relationship with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the two have the same spirit to abolish and eliminate slavery on the face of the earth.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the layered meanings in Surat al-Fil using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, particularly to reveal the denotative and connotative meanings of the main symbols in the surah. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a text analysis approach. Primary data is derived from the text of Surat al-Fil, while secondary data consists of scholarly references related to semiotics and Qur’anic exegesis. The results of the study show that symbols such as Tairan Ababil, Hijaaratin min sijjil, and Ka’asfin Ma’kul not only describe the historical events of the destruction of the elephant army (denotative meaning) but also contain a mythological narrative about divine intervention against forms of worldly arrogance. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Barthes' theory in interpreting Surat al-Fil as a symbolic discourse of resistance against ideological domination and tyrannical power. Implicitly, this approach opens up space for critical-ideological contemporary interpretations in understanding divine messages and can serve as a narrative basis for shaping social awareness and public policy based on divine values.

Abstract

The study of the Qur'an's verses that discuss plants reveals not only the beauty of God's creation but also contains profound theological, aesthetic, and spiritual messages. This article analyzes these verses through the approach of balaghah science, specifically ma'ānī and bayan, and enriches their inner meaning with a Sufi perspective. Ma'ānī science is used to examine the structure and style of language that emphasizes certain meanings, while bayan science reveals the meaning of figures of speech such as tashbīh, isti'ārah, and kināyah. And the Sufi approach views plants as symbols of tajallī Allah, the human spiritual journey, and a means of contemplation towards ma'rifatullāh. The process of plant growth is interpreted as an allegory of the development of faith, love, and good deeds that must be cultivated through spiritual training. The research findings demonstrate that plants in the Quran are not merely biological objects, but rather a medium of divine communication that conveys the values of monotheism, beauty, and ecological awareness. Thus, this multidisciplinary interpretation presents a holistic and transformative understanding of the Quran.

Abstract

This research aims to examine more deeply the study of semiotics on the story of people who were doomed in the Qur'an, one of them being the Sodomites. Examining the values and messages conveyed through the signs and symbols in the story with a semiotic approach initiated by Ferdinand de Saussure in the form of signifiers and signifieds, syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations. As well as with the narrative semiotic approach initiated by A.J. Greimas in describing the storyline of the Prophet Luth. This study uses a descriptive-analytic method which is based on qualitative data about the story of Prophet Luth and the people of Sodom in the Qur'an using the semiotic approach of Saussure and A.J Greimas. Many studies of the Qur'an have begun to be carried out using a semiotic approach in its interpretation. Deeper research on one of the stories in the Qur'an with a semiotic approach will lead us to many lessons and reveal the secrets behind the symbols and signs that exist in it. The result of this research is, it is found that the story of Prophet Luth and his people in the Qur'an is repeated many times by Allah with different verses and different storylines. In fact, it is part of the symbol that repetition occurs to give its respective purpose in several different places and as a complement to one another. Likewise, with Saussure's theory, there are many symbols and signs that God sent to commemorate them as well as us. The actions they commit are called heinous acts because they are the same as adultery, so the punishment for them according to fiqh scholars is the same as haad for adultery. As well as the narrative story of Prophet Luth which is more directed in a more directed manner with the Greimas narrative. Then the teachings and moral messages from the story of Prophet Luth can be wisdom and lessons for the people after him. This research is still limited to symbols in general, so future research can reveal symbols and signs and the secrets behind the language and every word in the verse.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the meaning of symbols used in the learning activities of students at Salafi Islamic boarding schools and to understand the application known as Rarangkén ngalogat. Rarangkén ngalogat is a symbol used exclusively by Islamic boarding schools in West Java. This research uses an analytical description method with an interactive analysis model. The approach used was qualitative descriptive. Data collection methods used were interviews, observations, and surveys. This study aimed to uncover the semiosis of rarangken ngalogat using Pierce’s semiosis theory and its use at the Miftahul Huda Islamic boarding school in Tasikmalaya. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, which proposes a trichotomy (representamen, object, and interpretant). The results show that the semiosis of rarangkén ngalogat at the Miftahul Huda Islamic boarding school leads to the sciences of balaghah, manṭiq, naḥw, and the addition of the word ngalogat. Rarangkén ngalogat is practiced during learning activities such as sorogan, bandongan, balagan, and pasaran in accordance with the ibtidā'i, thānawiy, and ma’ḥad ‘āliy levels. The Rarangken ngalogat is rarely used at the elementary level, and translations are sometimes written in Pegon script in classical texts. At the thānawiy level, the rarangken ngalogat becomes more visible and is frequently used, emphasizing its role in improving comprehension. This contrast with the Ma'had 'āliy level, where it is rarely used, underscores its importance. The use of rarangken ngalogat is very beneficial for students because it facilitates their understanding when reading the text.
