Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effect of red dragon fruit extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) and white dragon fruit extract (Hylocereus undatus) to total cholesterol levels in white rats (Rattus norvegicus). Total of 30 males white wistar strains were divided into five treatments i.e: (1) standard feed and Na-CMC 1% (K1), (2) standard feed and quail egg 10ml/kgBW (K2), (3) standard feed, quail egg 10ml/kgBW and simvastatin dose 0,72mg/day (P1), (4) standard feed, quail egg 10ml/kgBW and red dragon fruit extract dose 60mg/200gBW/day (P2), (3) standard feed, quail egg 10 ml/kgBW and white dragon fruit extract dose 120mg/200gBW/day (P3). The intervention was carried out for 14 days after 7 days acclimatization period. Data was analyzed by One Way ANOVA test and continued with Post Hoc Bonferroni test (p=0.05). In P2 group, there was a difference of total blood cholesterol level by 25.83 mg/dl compared with the positive control group and statistically significant (p<0.05). In P1 and P3 group there were difference in cholesterol levels of 9.5 mg/dl and 11.5 mg/dl compared with the positive control group, but not statistically significant (p>0.05). The comparison between red dragon extract group and white dragon extract showed a non-significant difference (p>0.05). Red dragon fruit extract and white dragon extract have a potential effect to improve hypercholesterolemia conditions.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the therapeutic effect of West Indian elm leaf extract on coronary artery atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemia Wistar rats. Cholesterol, a key factor in the pathophysiology of coronary heart disease, is present in fat-containing diets. Orlistat is one of the medications that can reduce blood cholesterol levels, but since it has side effects, herbs are more preferable to it. One such herbal plant, West Indian elm (Guazuma ulmifolia), contains tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids, secondary metabolites that carry the properties necessary to reduce blood cholesterol levels, in its leaves. In this experimental study, which focused on histopathological parameters to see the scale of progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis, 30 Wistar rats were induced with a high-fat diet and divided into 6 sample groups, consisting of three control groups (normal, negative, and positive) and three treatment groups (which received a West Indian elm leaf extract at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 g/kgBW). Significant results were obtained from both Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05) between the negative control group and the positive control group, between the negative control group and treatment group 2 (0.4 g/kgBW), and between the negative control group and treatment group 3 (0.8 g/kgBW). In conclusion, this study proved that West Indian elm (Guazuma ulmifolia) leaf extract reduces the development of coronary atherosclerosis and shares a similarity in therapeutic effect with orlistat.

Abstract

This research aimed to add evidence on the effect of white leadtree seed extract (Leucaena leucocephala) on postprandial blood glucose level on white male alloxan induced diabetic rats. This research was an experiment with pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects of this research were 25 white male rats, Wistar strain was divided into 5 groups. Group I was the positive control, which was treated with Acarbose, group II was the negative control, and group III, group IV, and group V were treatment groups and were given white leadtree seed extract of 1.5 g/kg of BW, 3.5 g/kg of BW, and 7.8 g/kg of BW respectively. Blood glucose level was checked before and two hours after treatment. The statistical analysis used one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test. The result showed that there were no significant differences between group III, group IV, and group V and the positive control group (p<0.05). The best result of inhibition of the increase in blood glucose level was found in 7.8 g/kg of BW (group V) dosage group with average difference of 186.4 mg/dl. In conclusion, white leadtree seed extract could decrease two hour postprandial blood glucose level in white male alloxan-induced diabetic rats and a dosage of 7.8 g/kg of BW was shown to be the most effective.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of parijoto fruit extract (Medinilla speciosa Blume) in improving the condition of fatty liver in male balb/c mice (Mus musculus L.) fed with a high-fat diet. Thirty male balb/c mice weighing 20 to 30 g were randomly divided into six groups, i.e: 1) Standard feed and Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium or CMC-Na 0.5% (K1); 2) High-fat diet and CMC-Na 0.5% (K2); 3) High-fat diet and simvastatin 0.026 mg/day (K3); 4) High-fat diet and parijoto fruit extract 5.6 mg/20 g BW (P1); 5) High-fat diet and parijoto fruit extract 8.4 mg/20 g BW (P2); 6) High-fat diet and parijoto fruit extract 11.2 mg/20 g BW (P3). Standard feed, high-fat diet, simvastatin, and parijoto fruit extract were administered for 56 days. On the 57th day, the total of 30 mice were terminated and the livers were then removed for H&E staining histopathological slides. Data on the degree of fatty liver on histopathological slides were collected and analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and followed by the Mann-Whitney test. The histopathological analysis showed Medinilla speciosa Blume extract at a dose of 5.6 mg/20 g BW in group P1 prevent the steatosis degree compared to high-fat feed mice in group K2 (p>0.05). Parijoto fruit extract could act as the potential treatment for fatty liver.
