Abstract

Learning Transformation Geometry (TG) needs a more informal approach to concern situational problems. This study aims to develop actionable knowledge of TG in the form of design related to context and yet general enough to use digital manipulative activities in new situations. We propose such knowledge in the form of conjectured Local Instructional Theory (LIT) in the framework of design research methodological framework. The designed learning activities were based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) principles and used batik as the context and van Hiele’s mode of geometric thought. In addition, the CorelDraw software is used as a tool to transform batik-making activities into a digital manipulative environment. The design consists of a pre-assessment and four learning activities. The data were analyzed retrospectively in accordance with the HLT. The analysis of the data described above and the justification of the processes during the teaching experiment indicate a compelling trajectory for students learning transformation geometry for this specific context and the prospect for future studies.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the effectiveness of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) as a differentiated learning approach in mathematics. CRT is important to implement because it accommodates students' diverse cultural backgrounds, thus increasing learning participation and understanding. This study used a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest type pre-experiment design. The research subject was class VIII B of SMP Negeri 15 Surakarta, which was selected by simple random sampling from eight parallel classes. The treatment was conducted in three meetings. The research instruments included learning outcome tests, student activity observation sheets, and student response questionnaires. The results of descriptive analysis showed that the average score of learning outcomes increased from 57.73 to 85.30. The single-sample t-test showed this improvement was statistically significant at the 0.05 significance level. Student activities showed positive engagement of 88.66%, while negative engagement amounted to 6.70%. More than 70% of students responded positively to the CRT implementation. The results of this study show that the CRT approach is efficacious in improving learning outcomes, student engagement, and response, and is relevant to be applied in culturally diverse classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to develop geometry learning media on curved-solid objects using Ispring Suite 8 with 3D effects supported by Google SketchUp. It also aims to find the effectiveness of the media towards the basic geometry skills and the learning result of 9th-grade students of junior high school. This study is a development study which refers to Budiyono’s development model that includes four stages. These stages are the preliminary, product development, product trial on its effectiveness, dissemination and product implementation. The entire stage was imposed on three different schools in Karanganyar, one of a district in Indonesia, by using stratified cluster random sampling. Within the three schools, we took seven classes to join the effectiveness test through the assessment questionnaire and the before-after test, as well as the efficacy test after the expert's judgement using the validation sheet. The result shows that the geometry learning media is valid based on the experts' validation judgement, and also practical based on the teacher and students’ judgement in the trial of the product. The students’ basic geometry skills and learning result are improved after getting the treatment with the media. Finally, we can conclude that this media is effective and able to be used further in the junior high school level.

Abstract

The preparation of a learning method is based on a clear foundation, one of which is by applying philosophy schools in education. There are seven main philosophical schools of education used in the preparation of learning methods. One of them is the philosophy of essentialism which prioritizes cultural cultivation in education and is also used in learning, especially in mathematics lessons. This study aims to describe the application of the view of the philosophy of essentialism to ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning. The researchers used a qualitative method with a literature study. Furthermore, the data collection technique is by collecting and analyzing data with bibliographic annotations. Data analysis consists of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. The findings show that the philosophy of the essentialism school directs education in cultural and discipline cultivation to students, especially in mathematics learning with ethnomathematics-based learning. The development of ethnomathematics-based learning is influenced by one of the philosophies of education, namely the philosophy of the essentialism school. Education that forms cultured human beings and the knowledge learned can be useful in daily life is the same goal of the philosophy of the school of essentialism and ethnomathematics.
