Abstract

Islam is often preached with rigid stigma and is not flexible. This view is confusing, because throughout its history Islam has expressed a dynamic nature in responding to the development of the times. One example is the political thinking of Muhammad Iqbal. This research aims to investigate the ideas of Muhammad Iqbal about the Islamic state concept of democracy and nationalism to express the dynamic pattern of modern Islamic political thought. The focus of this research is how the pattern of the dynamism of Islamic political thinking in the modern era is described in the works of Muhammad Iqbal, in particular in the book “The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam”. The research uses qualitative methods with content analysis approach to analyze the political thinking of Muhammad iqbal. The results of this study indicate that Muhammad Iqbal made a creative and contextual interpretation of the teachings of Islam to describe political theories appropriate to his time. In conclusion, the political thought of Muhammad Iqbal describes the concept of modern Islamic political dynamism which is contextual, progressive, and inspiring for the resurrection of contemporary Islam.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the factors that influence an individual's decision to convert to Islam in Indonesia. As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia provides a unique context for understanding the dynamics of religious conversion, particularly to Islam. This research employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with converts (converts) from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The findings reveal four main factors that influence the decision to embrace Islam: (1) spiritual factors and the search for life's meaning, (2) the influence of the social environment, such as friends, spouses, or family, (3) attraction to Islamic teachings perceived as logical and calming, and (4) personal experiences or life events that serve as spiritual turning points. This study contributes to the field of the sociology of religion and can serve as a reference for Islamic outreach organizations and religious institutions in designing humanistic and context-sensitive approaches to da'wah.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how the Toba Batak Muslim community maintains its cultural identity in the face of complex dynamics while adapting to Islamic principles in the face of urbanization and economic change by examining the pattern of relationships between Islamic law and customary traditions. Three regions—traditional rural areas (Humbang Hasundutan, Tapanuli Utara, Samosir, Toba), multireligious communities (Asahan, Tanjung Balai, Labuhanbatu), and large cities (Medan, Bandung)—are the focus of this qualitative study using a case study methodology. The study's findings highlight three key trends in the interaction between Islam and customs: harmony, compromise, and adaptation. The adaptation trend is evident in individuals from the place of origin who endeavor to maintain practices with minimal impact from Islamic law. A negotiation pattern has developed among individuals in diverse religious contexts who want to reconcile local customs with Islamic principles. Simultaneously, a pattern of harmony is observed in metropolitan areas, where individuals successfully reconcile traditions with Islamic tenets within a contemporary framework. Economic conditions and social mobility significantly influence these trends. Individuals with superior economic advantages often prioritize religious ideals, whereas others with economic constraints rely more on customs as a social mechanism. Social mobility facilitates the adaptation of traditional values to be more flexible and inclusive of Islamic beliefs, particularly in metropolitan settings. This study suggests that economic factors and social mobility act as catalysts in transforming the link between customs and religion within the Toba Batak Muslim community. Research recommendations emphasize the significance of locally-based religious education, inclusive discussion between indigenous and religious leaders, and economic empowerment to foster harmony between traditional beliefs and Islam.

Abstract

The fruit offering ritual in Buddhist religious practices at the Maha Vihara Maitreya Cemara Asri in Medan represents symbolism rich in theological and ethical meaning. This study aims to examine in depth the symbolic meaning of fruit in Buddhist worship and uncover its connection to the concepts of abundance and purity in Buddhist teachings. Using a qualitative approach, participatory observation methods, in-depth interviews with religious leaders, and triangulation to ensure accuracy and validity, the information obtained in this study found that fruit is positioned not only as a material offering, but also as an expression of the congregation's inner spirit, embodying the values of dāna (generosity), belief in the law of karma, and hope for virtue. Fruits such as apples and oranges are chosen because they reflect freshness, propriety, and prosperity, while fruits such as durian are avoided because they are considered to reflect less inner refinement and a sacred atmosphere. Fruit symbolism in rituals also serves as a medium for internalizing the teachings of impermanence (anicca) and the consequences of actions (vipaka), reinforcing reminders of moral action, reflections on inner qualities, and ways to visualize spiritual values in everyday life. This research enriches the body of Buddhist studies by highlighting symbolic practices often overlooked by academics.

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of Qur’anic verses on tolerance according to the Thematic Tafsir of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenag RI). The background of this research lies in the urgent need for a proper understanding of tolerance in Indonesia's pluralistic society and the importance of having an official government-endorsed tafsir as a reference. The research problems include how Kemenag RI interprets verses on tolerance, the principles of tolerance that can be formulated from these interpretations, and the relevance of such interpretations in today’s Indonesian context. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Primary data is sourced from the Thematic Tafsir published by Kemenag RI, especially the volume(s) relevant to the themes of tolerance and harmony. Data analysis is conducted through a descriptive-analytical approach to understand the interpretations and formulate the principles of tolerance. The findings show that the Thematic Tafsir of Kemenag RI interprets tolerance as a fundamental Islamic value that promotes peaceful coexistence, recognition of differences, and prohibition of religious coercion highly relevant for maintaining harmony in Indonesia. The novelty of this research lies in its specific focus on Kemenag RI’s Thematic Tafsir as the main source, the systematic formulation of tolerance principles derived from it, and the analysis of their relevance in the context of Indonesia’s diversity. Its relevance to the Indonesian context is evident in how the Thematic Tafsir aligns closely with the values of Pancasila, particularly the first and third principles on Divinity and Unity. This interpretation serves as an important official government reference for fostering peaceful interreligious life in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research focuses on the study of the concept of qanā’ah and its influence on mental health according to Buya Hamka in Tafsir al-Azhar. The purpose of this research is to explain how Buya Hamka interprets verses related to qanā’ah and its relevance to mental health. The research method used is a qualitative method with a library research approach. The primary source of this research is Tafsir al-Azhar by Buya Hamka, while secondary sources consist of classical and contemporary tafsir books, Sufism books, and Islamic psychology literature. Data analysis was carried out using the thematic method (maudhu’i). The results of the study indicate that qanā’ah according to Buya Hamka includes five dimensions: accepting willingly for what is there, asking for additional sustenance with appropriate efforts, being patient with Allah’s provisions, putting one’s trust in Allah, and not being attracted to the deceit of the world. This concept, when applied, functions as a self-control mechanism that can prevent the emergence of heart diseases such as envy, jealousy, greed, and complaints. From an Islamic psychological perspective, contentment can foster inner peace, gratitude, optimism, and resilience in the face of life’s difficulties. Thus, contentment is not merely a spiritual value but also significantly contributes to achieving individual mental health and social harmony.
