Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Case Method and Team-Based Project learning approaches within the context of the Geography Education Department's cultural and political geography courses at Universitas Negeri Medan. These methods, relevant to the Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, aim to enhance student skills through active, applied learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research gathered data via questionnaires distributed through Google Forms to a sample of 67 students out of a total population of 454 from the 2019-2022 academic cohorts. Findings indicate that the duration required for the Case Method varies with the complexity of the cases, ranging from 15-30 minutes for simpler issues to over 60 minutes for more intricate problems. The Team-Based Project approach necessitates 7 to 8 meetings, including initial planning and subsequent implementation phases, monitored by lecturers through direct communication or digital platforms like LMS forums or Zoom channels. However, the study reveals inefficiencies in applying these learning methods within the department, attributed to the substantial workload imposed by the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) and a lack of student engagement in assignments. It suggests a comprehensive revision of IQF assignments towards more discussion-oriented and field-practical approaches to address these challenges.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is a developing country that experiences high population growth every year. Population growth has an impact on the high demand for land use. Land use is often not in harmony with population growth, so land use does not align with regional spatial conditions. This study aims to determine land use in 2021 in Binjai City based on the 2020-2040 Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) using Spot 6 imagery and determine the suitability of 2021 land use in Binjai City based on the 2020-2020 Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) 2040 using Image Spot 6. This study is located in Binjai City, administratively flanked by two significant regencies: Langkat Regency and Deli Serdang Regency. The population of this research is the City of Binjai, with an area of 90.23 km2. Data collection techniques are documentation study techniques, image interpretation, and field observations. Data analysis was carried out in a qualitative descriptive manner. The results of the study show that Land use in Binjai City in 2021 includes an agricultural area of 52.93 km2 with a percentage of 58.66%, then a residential area of 33.85 km2 with a percentage of 37.63%, area conservation has an area of 1.58 km2 with a percentage of 1.75%, river bodies have an area of 0.90 km2 with a percentage of 1%, local protected areas have an area of 0.38 km2 with a percentage of 0.39%, defense and security areas have an area of 0.45 km2 with the percentage of 0.42%, industrial designation area of 0.12 km2 with a percentage of 0.15%, tourism area of 0.01 km2 with a percentage of 0.01%, and lakes/situ area of 0.01% 0.01 km2 with a percentage of 0.01%. The suitability of land use in 2021 with the Binjai City Spatial Plan (RTRW) for 2020-2040 is an area of 43.64 km2 with a percentage of 48.36% which is suitable while that which is not suitable is 46, 59 km2 with a percentage of 51.64%.

Abstract

Based on geographical location, Sabang municipality is located in an archipelago far from big cities and has a relatively small population so that the fulfillment of educational facilities needs attention. This study aims to analyze and evaluate the availability and affordability of public elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools in Sabang Municipality. This study uses quantitative and qualitative approaches (mix methods). The analysis of availability and affordability was carried out by calculating serviceability and buffering analysis based on normative reference and was completed with interviews with stakeholders of the Education Office. The results of the study show that for detailed availability, namely elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools are all categorized as deficits, while for detailed affordability, namely, elementary schools are categorized as high, junior high schools are categorized as medium, and senior high schools are categorized as high. The government explained that the availability and affordability of public schools at the elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools levels are adequate and accessible, especially equipped with transportation facilities. The conclusion shows that although this study focuses only on public schools so that it is found that the availability is still a deficit, on the other hand the location of the school can be reached, so it can be interpreted that the location of the school is strategic.

Abstract

Integrated social studies learning is a form of integrative learning applied in junior high schools by integrating several disciplines into one subject, namely geography, economics, sociology, and history. This provides obstacles for teachers teaching integrated social studies learning. The study aimed to determine the teachers' constraints and students' understanding of integrated social studies learning at SMPN 41 Medan. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method. The study results explain that the teacher's constraints in integrated social studies learning include difficulty understanding learning material outside the science teacher's field, limited time allocation, lack of learning facilities and infrastructure, and differences in each student's characteristics. Student understanding in terms of Integrated IPS learning is very high. This can be seen from students' interest during the learning process. It attracts students' attention with a percentage of 87.5% so that the majority of students in this situation feel the learning process is enjoyable and is considered a positive indication that teaching methods and strategies the learning used by the teacher has succeeded in attracting student interest so that they can understand the Integrated Social Sciences learning material. Students' understanding of social studies learning can be a benchmark for teacher success in integrating several disciplines into one subject.

Abstract

Spatial analysis is important for understanding how service facilities are distributed in a region and identifying key locations within that area. This study examines the layout of service facilities and trends in centrality in Labuhan Batu Regency, employing the Scalogram Method in conjunction with Centrality Analysis. The Scalogram Method evaluates the variations and access levels of service facilities to classify sub-districts according to their hierarchical positions, while Centrality Analysis determines important areas that greatly influence spatial dynamics and the delivery of services. The findings show significant variations in the ranking of services and regional importance, with Rantau Utara recognized as the primary service center, attaining the top scores in both the scalogram and centrality evaluations. In addition, Bilah Hulu and Rantau Selatan demonstrate significant spatial impact, enhancing their functions as secondary service hubs. In comparison, areas such as Panai Hilir, Panai Hulu, and Pangkatan are rated lower in terms of service order and importance, highlighting the need for enhanced infrastructure and improved distribution of services. The classification of centrality into four distinct categories creates an organized method for comprehending spatial impact, highlighting the distinctions between primary service centers and less central areas. These results emphasize the importance of fair regional development, indicating the need for specific policies to increase access to services, strengthen connections between regions, and promote balanced infrastructure development. By combining findings from the Scalogram and Centrality Analysis, this study provides valuable viewpoints for regional planning, presenting essential suggestions to improve service distribution and promote spatial equality in Labuhan Batu Regency
