Abstract

Highlights: 1. This study was the first in Gresik, Indonesia, to conduct mass screening of tuberculosis among waste workers, comprising various demographic profiles.2. Although the tuberculosis screening of the waste workers showed negative results, mass examination using an acid-fast bacilli smear remains crucial to detect latent infections and prevent transmissions.   Abstract Tuberculosis is a major source of illness and mortality worldwide. Therefore, tuberculosis screening is important to increase the number of active case-finding in a community. Bacteriological examinations can be used to initiate community-based active case-finding. Waste workers face a high risk of contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis due to their constant exposure to waste. This study aimed to conduct bacteriological examinations to identify tuberculosis infections among waste workers in Gresik, Indonesia, who were considered a high-risk group. An analytical observational study was carried out throughout September 2023 in the Ngipik subdistrict, Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. The primary study was conducted using a cross-sectional design using interviews, measurements, and sputum examinations for all samples. The screening involved a total of 72 waste workers who had daily contact with various types of sewage and waste, including medical waste. The data were analyzed descriptively because of the constant variable. Following the analysis, the data were presented using a table and a figure. According to the acid-fast bacilli examinations, all of the samples yielded negative results. Nevertheless, this study concludes that it is imperative to carry out mass tuberculosis screening in various settings, specifically among those with a high risk. Mass screening can uncover the potential of latent tuberculosis and, thus, reduce its transmission.

Comics can be an innovative promotional method to support the preventive campaign against tuberculosis.    Abstract As a tropical country, Indonesia continues to grapple with the prevalence of tuberculosis. This study conducted by the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia, presented a novel approach to prevent tuberculosis through measures tailored to the socio-cultural context of the population. Specifically, this study assessed how effective the use of tuberculosis comics is as an educational tool to inform junior high school students about tuberculosis. This research was quasi-experimental, with a one-group pre-test-post-test design. Seventy junior high school students in Dukun District, Gresik, Indonesia participated in this study. Each participant received a questionnaire consisting of ten questions about tuberculosis. Afterward, tuberculosis education was shared through comics. The post-test was carried out using the same questions as the pre-test. The data were analyzed using the R Program for Windows, version 4.1.3 (Auckland University, New Zealand). The analysis revealed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results (p < 0.0001). As indicated by the data, comics proved to be an effective method of educating people about infectious diseases, specifically tuberculosis. Here, we introduce an educational tool designed to revitalize the educational method for disseminating knowledge about infectious diseases. Ultimately, comics can increase students' interest in learning about tuberculosis, including its etiology, prevention, and treatment strategies.

Abstract

Background : Anemia is a condition in which there is a reduced number of red blood cells or a lower concentration of hemoglobin within them. Injectable contraception is the most widely utilized hormonal option. Research clearly indicates that heavy or prolonged menstruation serves as a major trigger for iron deficiency anemia in women of childbearing age. The 1-month and 3-month injectable contraceptives contain hormones that notably affect menstrual patterns. This study aims to analyze the differences in the incidence of anemia between users of the 1-month and 3-month injectable contraceptives. Method : This research method is observational analytic design with a comparative approach. The number of sample is 62 injectable contraceptive users, selected through consecutive sampling techniques. Hemoglobin levels were carefully examined as the measurement instrument. Data analysis was conducted using the Independent sample t-test and Chi-Square. Results : The results clearly demonstrate that among users of the 1-month injectable contraceptive, the majority exhibited regular menstrual patterns (40.3%). In contrast, most users of the 3-month injectable method experienced secondary amenorrhea (43.5%). Additionally, a significant proportion of respondents were found to be non-anemic (64.5%). The Independent sample t-test revealed a p-value of 0.025 (p < 0.05). The chi-square test presented a p-value of 0.598 (>0.05). Conclusion : There is a difference in hemoglobin levels in acceptors of 1-month and 3-month injectable contraceptives. There is no difference in the incidence of anemia in acceptors of 1-month and 3-month injectable contraceptives.

Abstract

Integration in the education of Muslims has become an agenda among Islamic intellectuals and activists. Where secular humanism and atheistic modernism leave Muslims with a legacy of educational dichotomy. Many contemporary Islamic educational institutions have been established since then, each with some distinctive integration models. Many Muslims advance the true integration of the Qur'an worldview in the Science and Technology curriculum whose students are at a critical stage of cognitive development, affective, spiritual, social, and ethical. This research presents qualitative reports that analyze several samples of integration models in a number of Islamic schools in Indonesia. In an effort to understand the Science and Technology Perspective this article assesses the worldview that has brought science and technology to its current stage. This research proposes a model for Islamic school education in which science and technology undergo thoughtful but holistic reconstruction, reinterpretation, and diversion of frameworks, and are organically infused with the Qur'an, and enrich 'Islamic studies' with good grounding and Science.

Abstract

Indonesia, home to over 270 million people, has the largest Muslim population globally, with approximately 87.18% adhering to Islam, driving significant demand for halal products, particularly in the food and pharmaceutical sectors. Gelatin, commonly used in medicinal capsules, often originates from porcine sources, necessitating precise halal authentication methods. This study presents the development of a novel genomic DNA-based Reference Material (RM) for gelatin, specifically for porcine DNA detection, employing Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) techniques. The methodology encompassed in-silico primer design, sample extraction optimization, DNA quality and quantity analysis, linearity assessment, limit of detection (LoD) and quantification (LoQ) determination, and RM characterization. Results indicated that the designed primers could reliably and efficiently detect porcine DNA, with optimal annealing at 58°C and primer concentration at 500 nM, achieving a PCR efficiency of 96.74%. The LoD and LoQ for pork meat samples were determined to be 0.02 pg/uL and 0.004 pg/uL, respectively, while the LoD for porcine gelatin was 0.27 ng/uL. The RMs exhibited robust homogeneity (Sig. 0.052), significant intergroup differences (Sig. 0.000), and low variation (CV 0.96%). Short-term storage at -80°C and -20°C preserved Ct value stability and consistency. Conclusively, this study successfully developed a novel gelatin-based genomic DNA RM for halal authentication, offering a scientifically validated tool that strengthens the halal assurance system, addressing Indonesian consumers’ demand for porcine-free products. These findings hold substantial implications for regulatory authorities, especially in Indonesia, and could inform the development of standardized qPCR RMs for porcine DNA detection in halal compliance testing.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is defined as an inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues caused by certain microorganisms. One of the surgical treatments for generalized chronic periodontitis is gingival curettage. Gingival curettage is a closed surgical procedure involving the removal of inflamed soft tissue lateral to the pocket wall. The goal is to promote the attachment of new connective tissue to the root surface by removing the pocket lining and junctional epithelium using a curette.Purpose: To determine whether gingival curettage is an effective treatment for patients with generalized chronic periodontitis. Case presentation: A 26-year-old female patient presented to the Special Dental and Oral Hospital of South Sumatra Province with complaints of rough masses on all of her teeth. Clinical examination revealed calculus in all regions, an OHI-S score of 1.83 (medium), and an O'Leary plaque index score of 41.37%. Probing depths ranged from 1 to 5 mm, with positive BOP on almost all teeth. After scaling and root planing, the decision was made to proceed with gingival curettage for the patient. Conclusion: In this case, gingival curettage helped reduce pocket depth and restored the gingiva to a more normal appearance. This demonstrates that gingival curettage can be an effective treatment for chronic periodontitis.

Abstract

Child stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that can inhibit the physical and mental growth and development of children. This study was conducted in shallot farming areas due to the high use of pesticides in the area. The use of pesticides can cause several health impacts, one of which is disrupting the work of growth hormones so that one of them is stunting.  This study aims to determine the description of nutritional status and the incidence of stunting in elementary school children in agricultural areas. The method used was a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The research was conducted at SD Dukulo 1 and SD Dukuhlo 2, with samples of grade IV and V students. Data were collected through measurement of body weight and height to assess nutritional status, as well as observation of environmental factors. The results showed that most children had normal nutritional status (82.1%), but 16% were classified as short and 1.9% as very short. Analysis of the relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of stunting revealed that undernutrition and poor nutritional status were closely related to the high incidence of stunting. A total of 18 children with poor nutritional status and 8 children with poor nutritional status were recorded as very stunted. Most of the parents' occupations are in the agricultural sector which allows children to be exposed to pesticides. Pesticides through the growth hormone pathway can cause a child's growth rate to be disrupted, so that any nutritional intake obtained if there is a disturbance in the gastrointestinal tract due to pesticide exposure will cause growth disorders. In conclusion, poor nutritional status can increase the risk of stunting in children, especially in agricultural areas exposed to pesticides. Appropriate nutritional interventions and prevention of harmful environmental exposures are needed.
