Abstract

Online pop culture has grown rapidly in the digital era and has changed the way people express their opinions, especially when discussing political issues. One of the most commonly used forms of expression is memes, as they are easy to understand, light, yet capable of delivering sharp criticism. This study examines the meanings contained in the meme “In the past, the father went to the capital riding ESEMKA, now the son goes to the capital riding EMKA,” uploaded by the Instagram account @komikkitaig. Using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, this research explores meaning on three levels. At the denotative level, the meme presents a symbolic comparison between the father through the “ESEMKA” vehicle and the son through “EMKA” as a representation of the Constitutional Court. At the connotative level, the symbols “ESEMKA EMKA” point to criticism of political projects that never materialized and the rise of dynastic politics. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, the meme shows how political power in Indonesia is often wrapped in symbolic development narratives. The findings suggest that memes function as visual satire capable of delivering political criticism without direct confrontation. Their simplicity and humor make the critique more accessible, as reflected in public responses such as reposts and online discussions that help reinforce the circulation of resistance discourses in digital spaces.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Pondok Pesantren Agroecology BhU in Bogor Regency as an alternative, environmentally based educational center responding to socio-ecological crises caused by the proliferation of gold mining activities. Employing a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method, the research traces the genealogy of the environmental movement and the critical pedagogical strategies implemented by the pesantren. The pesantren serves as a counter-discourse arena against the dominant knowledge regime that legitimizes extractive economies, fostering the structural awareness of students and the community while revitalizing agrarian practices and local ecological values. Findings reveal that critical education in the pesantren not only transfers knowledge but also cultivates ecological consciousness and social justice, linking Islamic spirituality with environmental advocacy. This model highlights the potential of pesantren as key actors in building socio-ecological resilience and resisting extractive capitalism, while offering a contextual educational framework relevant to vulnerable communities.

Abstract

This research analyzes the utilization of religious sentiment in the political campaign strategies of local political parties during the regional head elections (Pilkada) in Sidoarjo. The study employs a qualitative field research method through in-depth interviews, media content analysis, and observation. The purpose is to explore how religious symbols, narratives, and identity politics are mobilized to gain political legitimacy and mass support. In particular, the study focuses on how candidates strategically employ religious expressions, such as references to Islamic values, practices, and symbols, to resonate with voters, especially in a region where religion plays a significant role in social and cultural life. The results show that several political parties in Sidoarjo intentionally used religious issues, particularly those tied to Islamic values and institutions, as campaign tools. These strategies include invoking Islamic symbols, securing endorsements from religious leaders, and framing political discourse within religious narratives to appeal to religious sentiment. It has significant implications for the democratic process, raising concerns about the potential polarization of society and the manipulation of religious identity for political gain. Additionally, such practices may impact religious harmony in the region, as political parties exploit religious sentiments to consolidate their voter base. Theoretically, this study contributes to the discourse of political sociology and the sociology of religion by highlighting how religion is instrumentalized in contemporary electoral politics providing insights into the intersection of religion and political strategy in local governance.

Abstract

Religious communities have an important role in shaping and strengthening democratic practices and political participation in Surabaya, Indonesia. This research employed a qualitative approach, incorporating field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature reviews. The purpose of this article is to understand how religious values and institutions influence the political behavior of citizens. To achieve this objective, the study employs a qualitative case study approach in Surabaya. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with religious leaders and political activists, and a review of relevant literature. All data were then analyzed thematically to identify patterns of political participation among religious communities and how religious values shape their political actions. The findings show that religious actors such as clerics, church leaders, and interfaith communities play an active role in shaping political awareness, encouraging ethical political practices, and mobilizing voters. However, there are challenges, including the politicization of religion and the dominance of exclusive narratives. This study contributes to the sociology of religion by demonstrating how religious life in a plural society can become a force for democratization. Further research is suggested to explore digital religious activism in political contexts

Abstract

This study explores the symbolic meaning behind the choice of the "empty box" (kotak kosong) among young voters in the 2024 regional election (Pilkada) in Gresik, where only one candidate was on the ballot. Rather than seeing this choice as political apathy, this research interprets it as a conscious act of resistance and a demand for genuine political representation. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and symbolic interactionism theory, the study examines how young voters construct political meaning through their decision to vote for the empty box. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with informants aged 17–25 who reside in Gresik and intentionally voted for the empty box. The findings reveal that their decisions were shaped by critical reflection, peer discourse, and disillusionment with the lack of electoral competition. The act of selecting the empty box is understood as a symbolic expression of frustration, political identity, and expectations for democratic renewal. This study contributes by offering an empirical explanation of how symbolic political choices function as a form of youth resistance, a dimension rarely discussed in previous research on uncontested elections in Indonesia. It also provides a nuanced interpretation of the empty-box vote as a meaning-making process rather than a mere protest action.

Abstract

Gender inequality in domestic and emotional responsibilities remained strongly embedded in modern families. This study aimed to examine how domestic and emotional roles were represented and negotiated in dual-income families in Surabaya. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving five urban families selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected over three months through semi-structured interviews and participatory observation. The results indicated that domestic and emotional work was still dominated by women, with primary responsibilities largely assigned to them, while men’s involvement tended to be occasional and was socially perceived as voluntary. Subtle resistance strategies adopted by women, such as delaying housework or involving their sons, rarely led to sustained changes in the division of labor. The study concluded that efforts toward gender equality in the domestic sphere required gender-responsive policies, expanded paternity leave, and early gender equality education. These measures were essential to encourage men’s active participation in household labor and to foster more egalitarian family relationships.

Abstract

The Nyadran tradition is one of the religious and cultural rituals that has been going on for a long time and is still maintained by the Javanese people, including in Sidoarjo Regency. Amidst the dynamics of social change and modernization, the continuity of the Nyadran tradition has become an interesting phenomenon to study, especially in relation to how people interpret and practice it in contemporary socio-religious life. This study aims to analyze the meaning and role of the Nyadran tradition in the socio-religious life of the Javanese community in Sidoarjo Regency. This study uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data collection was carried out through participant observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, religious leaders, and residents directly involved in the implementation of Nyadran, as well as documentation studies. Data analysis uses Max Weber's social action theory to understand the motives and subjective meanings of people's actions in following the Nyadran tradition, as well as Clifford Geertz's symbolic theory to interpret Nyadran as a symbolic system that represents and shapes the Javanese people's worldview. The results of the study show that the Nyadran tradition has multidimensional meanings. Spiritually, Nyadran is understood as a form of respect and prayer to ancestors as well as a means of self-reflection in preparing to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. Socially, this tradition functions as a mechanism for strengthening solidarity, mutual cooperation, and social equality through collective practices such as cleaning graves, praying together, and holding feasts. Culturally, Nyadran plays an important role in preserving local values and maintaining Javanese cultural identity amid the tide of modernization. Thus, Nyadran not only survives as a cultural heritage, but also as a dynamic and relevant socio-religious practice in the lives of modern Javanese society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of restorative justice within the perspective of Islamic law and to explore its relevance to the modern criminal justice system. Using a literature review method, this research analyzes twenty accredited scientific articles published between 2015-2025. The findings indicate that the fundamental values of restorative justice, such as sulh, diyyah, and afw, have long been recognized in the tradition of Islamic law. This approach places emphasis not only on punishment but also on reconciliation, victim recovery, and the reintegration of offenders into society. In the context of contemporary legal practice, restorative justice has the potential to address issues such as excessive criminalization, prison overcrowding, and the declining public trust in legal institutions. However, its implementation requires regulatory support, professional training for law enforcement officers, and the internalization of maqashid sharia values within the national legal system. This study concludes that restorative justice is not only compatible with Islamic law but can also serve as a strategic approach to building a legal system that is more humane and socially just

Abstract

The phenomenon of the santri community and the choice of regional head candidates in local politics in Indonesia displays heterogeneous dynamics across regions. In the 2024 regional elections, Gus Barra, son of KH. Asep Saifuddin Chalim won the contest in Mojokerto, while Bu Nyai Munjidah, daughter of the late KH. A. Wahab Chasbullah, lost in Jombang despite having a strong religious pedigree. Both had the capital to win their second terms as incumbents, but the final results differed. This study aims to explain why the charisma and branding of their parents as kiai produced different electoral outcomes in these two santri regions, thereby contradicting the general understanding that santri communities are homogeneous and contributing to the literature on local Islamic democracy and the sociology of religious politics in Southeast Asia. This article uses a comparative qualitative method, drawing on interviews with political elites and Islamic boarding school figures, local media analysis, and KPU data. Weberian charisma and political agency theories are used to interpret the role of santri communities as active actors in the local democratic process, negotiating political choices. The research results show that victory or defeat is not solely determined by religious capital as the primary factor, but is also influenced by gender factors, political patronage, political campaigns, branding, and fragmented support from Islamic boarding schools. In conclusion, the santri community possesses dynamic, context-specific political agency that cannot be equated across regions.

Abstract

This research focuses on uncovering Anthony Giddens' duality of structure process in the religious practices of children in interfaith families, specifically how the dialectical interaction between child agency and religious structure reproduces or transforms those practices. The study utilizes a qualitative approach with Alfred Schutz's phenomenology design to capture subjective meaning, which is then theoretically analyzed using Anthony Giddens' Structuration Theory to understand the dialectical interaction between the parents' religious structure and the children's agency. Findings indicate that the family's religious structure is asymmetrical, dominated by the Mother (Islam) through resource control and dual legitimation (theological-pragmatic), which is reinforced by the Father's (Buddhist) strategic withdrawal. The children, as shrewd agents, realize their practices in the form of "distant obedience"; they use discursive consciousness to prioritize relational harmony, while practical consciousness reproduces the structure through ritual routinization. Simultaneously, this practice reproduces the dominant ritual structure, but also transforms the family's signification, shifting the meaning of religion from exclusive dogma toward universal ethics and tolerance, which is key to family resilience.
