Abstract

Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) is one of the complications that cause big problems in diabetics. One of the management of DFU management is by utilizing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) which is an additional therapy that has been proven to be used in the treatment of DFU. However, the results of its benefits and use are still being debated, so the purpose of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of HBOT on healing diabetic foot wounds. The method of this research is to use a literature review design. By using three international databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, and Ebscohost, six articles were included. The results of the review explained that from six articles conducted by the literature review, it was reported that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can accelerate the healing process of diabetic foot wounds (DFU), by reducing wound size, lowering levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cells (WBC)), induces angiogenesis of EGF, VEGF, PDGF, FGF-2 and CXCL10 and changes serum interleukin 6 (IL-6) and VEGF levels to be greater. Conclusion (HBOT) is an appropriate adjunct therapy, which can provide effectiveness in the treatment of DFU by accelerating the healing of DFU and preventing further infection in DFU, so as to reduce the risk of amputation.

Abstract

Patients with a stoma tend to experience obstacles in carrying out treatment independently, which causes several problems, including embarrassment due to bag noise, gas, and odor, fear of bag leakage, and complications in the form of pain and skin excoriation around the stomal location, stomal diarrhea or constipation, and enemas. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge and skills of patients with abdominal stomas (colostomies and ileostomies) in carrying out independent stoma care and the educational methods used. This research is a literature study with a scoping review design on 4 databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, and Ebscho, with the keywords Self Care AND skill OR knowledge AND Colostomi OR ostomi OR ostomate OR Ileostomi, as well as filtering articles using the Mendeley application in the period 2017–2022. There were 7 articles obtained. The results of the research from the 7 articles obtained showed that patients with a new ostomi after stoma creation had a poor level of knowledge regarding self-care in the postoperative period due to the impact of changes in their physical and emotional conditions, and this increased along with treatment interventions and patient involvement in caring for their stoma. In addition, ostomi patients generally have skills in emptying and changing the stoma bag, peristomal skin care, and diet modification. In the process of gaining knowledge, ostomates need the involvement of family and health workers, as well as education that suits the ostomate's needs.

Abstract

Nursing remains predominantly female worldwide, even as the need for a diverse healthcare workforce grows. Nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals; however, the profession faces an increasing shortage. Although nursing has expanded rapidly (Kouta & Kaite, 2011), it is often associated with traditional, female caregiving roles. In the Western world, Florence Nightingale is celebrated as a key figure in nursing (Turkowski & Turkowski, 2024), whereas Rufaidah Al-Aslamiyah is recognized in the Islamic world (Bodrick et al., 2022). Both are women, and their status as pioneers perpetuates the idea that nursing is a feminist profession. Historically, Indonesia has limited nursing education to female students, reinforcing this stigma. This perception has become a global issue (Subu et al., 2022), leading to fewer male nurses at all educational and professional levels in the field. For instance, a nursing school noted that a male student withdrew because he was the only male participant. Research indicated that male nurses often feel isolated or marginalized (Yip et al. 2021).
