Abstract

Utilization of data and information on ecosystem services is used as a reference in the management of natural resources and the environment as well as a guide for policy makers to determine priority locations in critical ecosystem restoration. There are challenges for Forest Management Unit (FMU) staff and community members to accurately collect and report specific information on forest carbon, biodiversity, supply forest types, and cultural ecosystem services. This service aims to facilitate FMU staff and members of the social forestry community in Aceh Province to receive Excel-based training on ecosystem services tools. The method used is counseling through training activities carried out for six days using excel-based ecosystem services tools, namely forest carbon, tree biodiversity, and forest integrity Assessment (FIA). The participants of this activity were 22 participants who came from KPH staff, forest community groups, local government agencies (BKSDA Aceh, BPDASL KA, TNGL), as well as staff and students of Forestry at Syiah Kuala University. The results obtained from this activity are direct understanding and practice by participants regarding the use of excel-based ecosystem service tools.

Abstract

Forests have a role as carbon sinks and come under the spotlight when the world is facing the climate change problem. Urban forests have functions as the most effective carbon sinks. Banda Aceh City only has 7.15 ha of urban forest, and the vegetation that grows in the urban forest is essential for carbon emissions reduction. This study aimed to determine the potential tree biomass and carbon sink value in the BNI Urban Forest, Banda Aceh City, Indonesia. This study used vegetation analysis by inventory method with the census sampling method. The diameter of all trees was measured, and tree biomass, carbon stocks, and carbon sequestration were calculated. This study identified 16 tree species in the BNI Urban Forest with a total of 318 individuals, showing Casuarina equisetifolia as the most dominant tree (163 trees). The above-ground biomass, carbon stock, and carbon sequestration by the vegetation in the BNI Urban Forest were 24.66 tons/ha, 11.59 tons/ha, and 42.51 tons/ha, respectively. This study presented the vegetation conditions and the potential of carbon sequestration, which can be used to monitor and evaluate the benefits of the existence of urban forests in Banda Aceh. Keywords: carbon sequestration, carbon stock, green open space, tree biomass, urban forest

Abstract

The productivity of Arabica coffee in low-altitude areas in Aceh have been declined, caused by an increase in temperatures, and by pests and diseases attack. This study aims to develop adaptation strategies to climate change in Aceh trough understanding how coffee productivity correlates with the management practices across the altitude. To find out a correlation between farming practices variables and coffee productivity, Spearman's rank test was used. To assess whether farming practice explanatory variables affected by the altitudes, a non-parametric with the Kruskal-Wallis Test, with Tukey’s post-hoc test (P0.05) with Chi-square distance were used. The results showed that coffee productivity was positively and significantly correlated to pruning, weeding, application of fertilizer, and application of pest and disease control, but was not to coffee plant density, sustainability certification, land conservation, and age of the coffee plant. Adaptation strategies for farmers in higher altitudes are to maintain the coffee plant density as well as shade density at an optimum level, followed by increasing management practices such as pruning, weeding, application of fertilizer, and pest and diseases control; in lower altitudes, those are to increase shade density both with Leucaena and multipurpose plants such as avocado and citrus, as well as increasing management practices such as land conservation, pruning, weeding, application of fertilizer and pest and diseases control. In middle altitudes, those are to maintain and improve management practices applied

Abstract

Forests are natural resources that play an essential role in climate change mitigation. Rising earth temperatures are causing climate change, which is driven by an increase in greenhouse particles, one of which is carbon particles. Human actions generate carbon particles. The amount of carbon absorbed and stored is critical to understanding and serves as a measure of forest condition. The study’s goal is to determine the amount of carbon stored in the Alue Geulima forest in Tahura Pocut Meurah Intan. The Alue Geulima Forest is a representative conservation area with high biodiversity and forest cover. Nested plot methods (in metres): tree level (20 × 20); pole level (10 × 10) and sapling level (5 × 5). Placement of plots systematically (uniform spacing) and the initial plots were placed randomly. The number of plots is 25 plots, sampling of intensity 0.5% represents 200 ha of Alue Geulima forest. The results showed that the value of carbon stocks stored in various strata of stands (trees, poles and saplings) found in 25 measuring plots reached 3,483.76 tons or the average reached the highest in RPH Alue Geulima found at the tree level, namely 2,338.41 tons ha-1. The total carbon stock stored above ground level in the Alue Geulima Tahura PMI Aceh Besar RPH as a whole is 139.35 tons ha-1 with total carbon stocks per 200 ha Alue Geulima RPH forest area of 27,870.08 tons.

The economic value of natural attractions in the Suhom Waterfall, Tunong Krueng Kala Village, Lhoong Sub-District, Aceh Besar District with travel cost methodAbstract. Natural resources are a crucial asset for the development of a country, especially in the economic field. There is a paradigm that timber products (timber oriented) is the only economic value that can be extracted from forests and this is one of the causes of deforestation in Indonesia. In fact, the forest has an indirect benefit value which, if seen, has a greater potential than the benefits from the wood products, namely in terms of ecotourism. This study aims to determine the economic value of Natural Tourism Objects at Suhom Waterfall, Tunong Krueng Kala Village, Lhoong District, Aceh Besar District. The study used interview and observation methods and analyzed using the travel cost method. The sample of this research is 45 visitors and the people of Tunong Krueng Kala Village. The results showed that the economic value of the natural tourism object of Suhom Waterfall by using the Travel Cost Method was Rp3.467.706.528,00/year.

Abstract

Traditional agroforestry systems (TAFS) are longstanding practices characterized by the absence of intentional agricultural intensification. In Aceh, Indonesia, a specific type of TAFS known as "lampoh" is practiced, representing a multispecies agroforestry system deeply rooted in Acehnese culture. This study aimed to identify the plant species found in traditional agroforestry gardens in Aceh Besar and explore their utilization by the local community. The study was conducted in three villages within the Simpang Tiga District of Aceh Besar, utilizing primary and secondary data collection methods. Direct observations and interviews with community members were employed to identify plant species and gather insights into Historis and present practices. The study revealed a traditional multistory agroforestry system, Lampoh, consisting of diverse tree species and perennial plants. Interviews identified 24 Historisly and currently cultivated and utilized plant species, with some species no longer present in the agroforestry gardens of the studied villages. The decrease in agroforestry garden utilization was attributed to shifts in primary income sources, modernization, and urbanization, which provided alternative livelihoods and preferences. To ensure the sustainability of agroforestry practices, efforts should integrate agroforestry into evolving livelihood systems, raise awareness about its importance, and improve market access, taking into account the changing economic landscape and community preferences. This will help preserve the contributions of agroforestry to food security, ecological diversity, and economic well-being.
