Abstract

Studies show that speaking anxiety is a common challenge for many students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Therefore, this research was conducted to explore levels of speaking anxiety, factors contributing to students' anxiety, and coping strategies. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a case study design focuses on 36 eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Pabuaran. Instruments include a close-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and observational sheet, complemented by data-collecting techniques such as questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. The finding reveals that 3 participants (8%) indicated high anxiety, 16 participants (45%) indicated moderate anxiety, and 17 participants (47%) indicated low anxiety. Factors contributing to anxiety include personal and interpersonal anxieties, and classroom procedures. Students employ coping strategies such as preparation, relaxation, and positive thinking. It can be inferred that students are experiencing low levels of speaking anxiety, with two main factors including personal and interpersonal anxieties and classroom procedures. The strategies employed can serve as a reference for other students in managing their anxiety and improving their speaking skills.

Abstract

An innovative approach to lesson planning incorporates the high order thinking skill (HOTS) model of learning with a strategy for identifying students' challenging words through hypertext. This study primarily evaluates the effectiveness of English language teaching materials utilising the hypertext integrated HOTS model on student learning outcomes. This study used a pre-test-posttest group design in its research technique, by involving 80 Class X pupils for the school year 2023/2024. Researchers utilised the snowball sampling approach to establish the necessary sample size. The students were assigned to Group A (experimental) and Group B (control). Subsequently, pupils take a pretest to identify any discrepancies between their knowledge levels. The research findings indicate that the observed T value is 8.313 and the significance value is below 0.05. Thus, it can be inferred that incorporating HOTS-based English teaching materials with the hypertext paradigm is effective in improving student learning results. This study is significant as it can enhance proficiency in the English language, particularly by emphasising the teacher's influence on the efficacy of HOTS-based English language teaching materials integrated with the hypertext model on student learning outcomes in English language acquisition.

Abstract

This qualitative case study explores the intricate relationship between self-regulated learning (SRL) and critical thinking in a blended learning environment. Using a case study approach, the research aims to develop a substantive theory that explains the pedagogical mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of this modality. Data was collected from 34 participants through a 55-item SRL questionnaire, student interviews, and document analysis of critical thinking test results based on Ennis’s indicators. The study followed the core procedures of grounded theory, including open, axial, and selective coding. The findings led to the development of the Integrated Critical Stimulation conjecture, which posits that blended learning is a uniquely synergistic approach that effectively fosters critical thinking. This synergy is a “dual stimulus,” where the face-to-face component provides crucial scaffolding and real-time feedback, and the online component offers a space for autonomous practice and deep reflection. The study’s most significant finding is that this synergy is particularly effective for students with moderate SRL abilities, who benefit from the balanced support and autonomy the blended model provides. The conjecture suggests that a deliberate and strategic integration of modalities, tailored to student characteristics, is key to developing critical thinking skills.

Abstract

English proficiency is vital for chemical engineering students to access scientific literature and technical documentation. Among the critical skills, reading comprehension plays a central role. This study investigates the relationship between reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension in first-year chemical engineering students at Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. A quantitative approach was employed, involving 66 participants. Data were gathered using a reading self-efficacy questionnaire and a standardized reading comprehension test. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel to determine the relationship between the two variables. The analysis indicated a moderate positive correlation between reading self-efficacy and reading comprehension (r = 0.469). The p-value (7.04 × 10⁻⁵) was below the 0.05 threshold, confirming statistical significance. These findings suggest that students with higher confidence in their reading abilities tend to perform better in reading comprehension tasks. The results support the initial hypothesis that self-efficacy significantly influences reading comprehension. This underscores the need for instructional strategies that build students' confidence in reading. To enhance reading comprehension among chemical engineering students, educators should prioritize methods that foster reading self-efficacy. One effective approach is the use of top-down reading strategies, which encourage active engagement with texts and can improve both confidence and comprehension outcomes.

Abstract

Es Selendang Mayang is a traditional drink from Betawi (Jakarta), Indonesia, popular for its sweet, savory flavor and colorful appearance (usually red, white, and green) resembling a scarf. The drink consists of three main components: a chewy cake called "selendang mayang," a savory coconut milk sauce, and a sweet brown sugar syrup, served with ice cubes for a refreshing treat. Globalization is changing the consumption patterns of traditional products that face the pressure of modern food. Es Selendang Mayang as a traditional Indonesian product has the potential to be developed. This research aims to analyze the chemical composition and physics of materials as well as ice-making techniques to produce quality products. The formulation of the problem includes the identification of materials and the influence of production techniques on the quality of the ice. Theoretical studies focus on materials science and traditional culinary production techniques. The methodology uses a qualitative approach with observational data collection, interviews, and laboratory tests. Data analysis was carried out in a systematic descriptive manner by comparing variations of materials and techniques. The results showed that the combination of rice flour and hunkwe produced the best texture and natural dyes supporting the aesthetics of the product. The implementation of research results can improve the quality and competitiveness of products and preserve local culinary culture.

Abstract

Reliable and valid speaking assessment is crucial for accurately interpreting young learners’ communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Although the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Speaking Ratings are widely used in adult contexts, empirical evidence supporting their adaptation for primary school learners, particularly in Indonesia, remains limited. This study employed a quantitative psychometric validation design to examine the content validity and inter-rater reliability of an adapted FSI scale. Six expert validators (two media, two language, and two material experts), two trained raters, and 30 Grade V students from a public primary school participated. The scale was contextually modified to align with young learners’ characteristics while retaining its five domains. Students performed a 2–3 minute monologue based on visual prompts, which was video-recorded and independently scored. Content validity was assessed using Aiken’s V, and inter-rater reliability was analyzed using a two-way random-effects Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) with absolute agreement. Aiken’s V coefficients ranged from 0.50 to 1.00, with a mean of 0.87 across 54 indicators, indicating strong content validity. The ICC results demonstrated consistent scoring between raters, suggesting satisfactory inter-rater reliability. The findings provide initial psychometric support for the adapted FSI Speaking Ratings in primary EFL contexts, enhancing assessment objectivity and standardization. However, limitations include a small sample size, limited number of raters, single-site data, and the absence of construct validity analysis. Future studies should address these constraints to strengthen generalizability and validation.

Abstract

The role of English in Indonesia can be said quite special because English is the only compulsory foreign language included in secondary curriculums. However, the special status of English in national education is not accompanied by satisfactory results. Out-classroom experience (OCE) is believed to overcome this issue and has been applied successfully. Therefore, this study investigates the use of out-classroom experience in enhancing Indonesian EFL learners’ ability in speaking English. By conducting a case study approach, the research used triangulation data collection techniques consisting of classroom observation, interview, and speaking performance test. The study involved 40 undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Banten province as its subjects. The result showed that the use of OCE positively contributes to the development of students’ speaking development. Out-classroom activities can facilitate the learners to access or even create language exposures by themselves. This study provided some implications about using OCE for language teachers and educational practitioners. Keywords: Out-Classroom experiences, speaking, college students, EFL context
