Abstract

This research aims to determine the forms of cyberbullying on social media and also determine the forms of disrespectful strategies carried out by social media users through social media reactions. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data is taken from online comments provided by social media users on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. The data source was taken from the social media accounts of Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian. The results of this thesis prove that of the 34 extracts found from the two celebrity accounts, only 5 forms of cyberbullying were found from the two celebrity accounts, namely flaming consisting of 22 extracts, harassment 3 extracts, denigration 5 extracts, outing and trickery 2 extract, and exclusion. from 2extracts, no cyberstalking and impersonation were found from Kylie Jenner's account and Kim Kardashian's account. The next aim is the forms of incivility strategies used in cyberbullying comments. However, only 4 forms of impoliteness were found, namely 9 forms of positive impoliteness, 12 forms of negative impoliteness, 7 bald on record impoliteness, and finally 3 forms of sarcasm or mock impoliteness. We did not find polite restraint because polite restraint is not used at all in cyberbullying on social media. This results from cyberbullying's inappropriate goal of hurting, offending, and abusing people's feelings.

Abstract

This research examines the mechanisms of semantic change in English and German, focusing on comparing and contrasting these processes across the two languages and investigating the influence of major historical events and societal shifts. By utilizing digital text corpora, libraries, archives, and modern digital media, the study conducts qualitative analyses, including case studies and discourse analysis, to explore semantic evolution. Thematic analysis was employed to thoroughly examine and interpret the data, allowing for the identification of recurring patterns, themes, and significant insights. The results showed that both English and German undergo significant semantic shifts driven by a metaphorical extension (i.e., narrowing or broadening of meanings, pejoration and amelioration, frequency and pathway of change, cultural and historical influences) and historical events and societal shifts that influence semantic change (i.e., wars and conflicts, industrialization, technological advancement, globalization, and cultural exchange, societal movements, and ideological shifts). The role of metaphorical extension is seen in adapting language to technological advancements while highlighting linguistic evolution through narrowing and broadening meanings influenced by cultural, historical, and linguistic factors. Additionally, pejoration and amelioration reflect societal changes and attitudes. Historical events and societal shifts, such as wars, industrialization, technological advancements, globalization, and social movements, significantly impact semantic changes in both English and German. These external influences catalyze language use and meaning shifts, illustrating the interaction between language and human experience.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to examine the use of linguistic pragmatics in the group discussions on tax strategy and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects among management students. Employing a qualitative research design with a case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, audio-video recordings of group discussions, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Speech Act Theory (Austin and Searle) and Grice’s theory of implicature to interpret implied meanings and communicative strategies within group interactions. Findings reveal that students employ various speech acts, including directives, assertives, expressives, and commissives, which function not only to convey information but also to establish social roles and influence group dynamics. The use of implicature and presupposition facilitates implicit communication, expediting the discussion process and maintaining group harmony. Mitigation and persuasion strategies proved effective in building consensus and managing conflicts. Social position differences within groups influenced pragmatic language use patterns, where dominant members tended to use more direct language, while others preferred subtler and implicit expressions. This study underscores the significance of pragmatic competence as a pivotal communication skill in both academic and professional contexts. It is recommended that educational institutions integrate pragmatic communication training into curricula to enhance students’ effective communication skillsKeyword: linguistic pragmatics, speech acts, implicature, tax strategy, Corporate Social Responsibility, academic communication
