Abstract

This study describes the perception of lecturer and students toward the English teaching methodology. The implementation of English teaching methodology underlay in nine aspects, namely: the use of lecturer’s utterances, the lecturer’s attitude, classroom rules, learning material, teaching media, learning activity, classroom interaction, classroom management, and assessment. In this study, the lecturer was the facilitator of the subject of English for Hotel and Restaurant. The students were the fourth semester students of Business English program, Faculty of Languages and Literature, State University of Makassar. Data on lecturer and students’ perception were taken by distributing questionnaires and giving interview questions. The data analysis showed that the students’ perception was categorized Positive towards the implementation of their lecturer’s English teaching methodology. This means that the students had a view that their lecturer had designed and implemented her teaching very well. Whilst, the lecturer’s perception was categorized strongly positive. This indicates that the lecturer had assured that her teaching program could help and facilitate her students to study well.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore aspects of discourse analysis through Van Dijk's approach to folklore. This folklore contains many educational values, ethics, norms as well as socio-cultural aspects. For the analysis of discourse on folklore, the Van Dijk model, which emphasizes elements of critical discourse, was used (Critical Discourse Analysis). This research is library research by using the naturalistic approach with Van Dijk model analysis. The result of this research was the aspects analyzed of macrostructure and microstructure. The macro structure is thematic and schematic. The element analyzed the essence of the theme of the discourse. That is morality (admirable nature) or “good morality”. In the micro structure analyzed aspects of semantic, syntax, stylictic, and rethoric. In semantic aspect analyzed conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, collocative meaning and thematic meaning.

Abstract

Today, in higher education, as at the university level, the learning process is still evolving. The objective of this study is to determine how to use the brainstorming concept to help students, particularly those who are already in semester 5, improve their English language skills. In this way, knowledge that may explicitly examine the degree of function is studied and explored by students in order to help them understand the concept of learning. Research design is use quantitative and survey as an approach whereas observation and questionnaire to collecting data. The result shows that brainstorming method was effective in impoving the students’ language skills especially for the 5 grade English learning program.Brainstorming talks about two possibilities of memory, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM), as it is said to stimulate the minds of learners to activate creative thinking skills to build new ideas by connecting new knowledge with old, to build new links, to rearrange or reverse knowledge, to make connections between different concepts, to form make new connections or apply knowledge to a new field for learners to strike a balance.This research recommended the subsequent investigation to develop the method especially brainstorming for improving the students’ English skills.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out and describe how can rereading and discussing drama text “Topekkong Agreement “stimulate the students English performance. The research applied Mixed Method, combines quantitative and qualitative approach by essentially mixing both quantitative and qualitative data in a single study. The purpose of mixed methods research is to build up the synergy and strength exist between quantitative and qualitative research methods in order to fully understand a phenomenon is possibly using either qualitative or quantitative alone. The object of the research was the fifth grade of English and Literature Department that cconsisted of 28 students whom were divided into sixt group discussions. The research result indicates that students’ English Performance by using drama text significantly stimulate where it gained a development, the mean score of pretest is 6,63, which is categorized as fairly good and posttest is 7.83 its categorized as good (8.05 > 6.80) and the standard deviation was 0.47 pretest and standard deviation of posttest was 0.62. The T score is ( -18.90) the probability test is (1,666) so the result of score -18.90 < 1,666. H0 is reject. It means that there is significantly between pretest and posttest by rereading and discussing drama text to stimulate English performance. The questionnaires were used to find out the students interest after being taught through rereading and discussing the local drama text. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher concluded that rereading and discussing drama text from local history can stimulate the students’ English performance in two aspects they are English performance that consists of speaking accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility, Furthermore, rereading and discussing activities generate aspects imitative, intensive, responsive, transactional (dialogue), interpersonal, and extensive.
