Abstract

Permasalahan pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga di Desa Dangin Puri Kangin, Denpasar, masih menjadi tantangan lingkungan yang signifikan, terutama akibat rendahnya kesadaran dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam memilah dan mengelola sampah secara mandiri. Melalui program pengabdian ini, dilakukan penyuluhan dan pendampingan kepada ibu-ibu PKK sebagai agen perubahan lingkungan. Kegiatan dilaksanakan sepanjang Juli 2025 dengan metode observasi, ceramah interaktif, diskusi, praktik lapangan, dan evaluasi. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan dan partisipasi ibu PKK dalam pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga, serta munculnya inisiatif pembentukan komunitas bank sampah. Program ini memberikan kontribusi nyata dalam membangun kesadaran kolektif akan pentingnya lingkungan bersih dan pengelolaan sampah berbasis rumah tangga secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

The government has built a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to reduce environmental pollution. Suwung WWTP is a liquid waste treatment unit constructed using an aerated lagoon and sedimentation pond system to treat household wastewater in the areas around Denpasar, Sanur, and Kuta. The purpose of this study is to understand the technical design of the aerated lagoon unit at Suwung WWTP in Denpasar. This study uses a comparison of aerated lagoon design criteria with existing data from the aerated lagoon at Suwung WWTP. The study results on the quality of influent and effluent from the aeration ponds at Suwung WWTP have met quality standards according to the Bali Governor Regulation Number 16 of 2016 regarding BOD, TSS, pH, and DO parameters. The effectiveness of BOD removal in aerated lagoon I was 34.04% and in aerated lagoon II was 24.68%, while the TSS removal in aerated lagoon I was 23.72% and in aerated lagoon II was 11.68%. The existing aerated lagoon design complies with the design criteria indicators for aerobic flow through as per Annex II of PUPR Regulation No. 04 of 2017.

Abstract

Hygiene and sanitation are essential factors in fish processing to ensure food availability and safety. Escherichia coli causes foodborne illness, originating from pindang fish from the Kusamba breeding center, Klungkung Regency, Bali. Availability and security of food cover cleanliness are essential to hygiene and sanitation, where Escherichia coli indicates food contamination. This study aims to determine the bacteriological quality of boiled pindang products and the effect of sanitation and hygiene on the presence of E. coli in pindang products conducted at the Fish Preservation Center in Kusamba Village, Klungkung, Bali in November-December 2022. The study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach and analysis. The laboratory uses the MPN (Most Probable Number). I was preparing a handling strategy with a SWOT analysis. The results showed that environmental sanitation and personal hygiene had a significant effect. MPN test results obtained a positive percentage of 93.1% and a negative of 6.9%. Of the 44 hospital wards, the results could have been better in environmental sanitation at 11.3 %, equipment sanitation at 6.8%, and personal hygiene at 8.1%. The implementation strategy to minimize the presence of E.coli bacteria is maintaining the unity of the quality system by carrying out sanitation and hygiene, starting from raw materials, processes, and products.

Abstract

Stunting sebagai masalah kesehatan kronis akibat kekurangan gizi masih menjadi tantangan serius di Indonesia, terutama di daerah tertinggal seperti Desa O’o, Kabupaten Dompu, Nusa Tenggara Barat, dengan prevalensi mencapai 20,60%. Penelitian ini mengusulkan pendekatan edukasi stunting yang inovatif melalui integrasi prinsip kimia, khususnya reaksi redoks, dalam pengolahan pangan bergizi dan pengelolaan limbah organik. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengembangkan model edukasi berbasis kimia terapan untuk meningkatkan kapasitas kader Posyandu dalam pencegahan stunting secara holistik. Metode partisipatif diterapkan dengan melibatkan 39 kader Posyandu Desa O’o dan UMKM lokal. Kegiatan meliputi pelatihan tentang peran reaksi redoks dalam mempertahankan dan meningkatkan ketersediaan hayati zat gizi mikro (besi, seng, kalsium), praktik pengolahan pangan lokal (nugget jamur, bakso jamur, jamur krispi) dengan kontrol oksidasi dan reduksi, serta pembuatan pupuk organik cair (POC) dari limbah rumah tangga melalui fermentasi anaerob. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan kader sebesar 50%, terutama dalam pemahaman penerapan redoks untuk mengurangi senyawa antinutrisi dan mempertahankan kandungan gizi. Kader berhasil memproduksi olahan pangan dengan retensi gizi hingga 80% serta mengurangi timbunan sampah organik rumah tangga sebesar 60% melalui produksi POC. Pendekatan ini tidak hanya meningkatkan ketahanan pangan dan gizi, tetapi juga menciptakan siklus berkelanjutan antara kesehatan, lingkungan, dan pemberdayaan masyarakat. Sehingga, integrasi prinsip kimia khususnya reaksi redoks dalam edukasi stunting terbukti efektif sebagai solusi kontekstual, partisipatif, dan berbasis sains terapan. Model ini dapat diadopsi sebagai strategi inovatif untuk percepatan penurunan stunting di daerah lain dengan permasalahan serupa.

Abstract

Sustainable waste management has become a highly strategic issue in Gianyar Regency, Bali, in line with the increasing volume of waste generation and the limited capacity of final disposal sites. This study aims to analyze the existing conditions and performance of waste management at the Temesi landfill based on technical, environmental, economic, and social aspects. The method employed is a descriptive-quantitative approach, involving field observations, interviews with site managers, documentation of operational data from January to May 2025, and mass balance analysis. The results indicate that the total waste generation reached 30,964 tons, with an average of 213.54 tons per day, predominantly composed of organic waste. Approximately 50.16% of the waste is processed into compost, 11.08% is recycled, and 38.76% remains as residual waste disposed of in the landfill. The material recovery rate has reached 61%, indicating that the system is moving toward the implementation of circular economy principles. Economically, the waste bank operation generates a surplus of IDR 149,933,210. However, environmental aspects remain a major challenge, particularly due to the suboptimal leachate treatment system, which poses a potential risk of environmental pollution. Furthermore, improvements in technological capacity and community participation are required to support more sustainable waste management.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the high concentration of nutrients, particularly ammonium (NH₄⁺) and phosphate (PO₄³⁻), in domestic wastewater, which can lead to eutrophication if not properly treated. The objective of this research is to analyze the hydraulic characteristics and filtration performance of biochar media in a two-compartment filtration system for domestic wastewater treatment. The study was conducted experimentally using a laboratory-scale filtration unit with effective dimensions of 200 mm × 200 mm and a media height of 700 mm. The system was operated under continuous flow conditions at a discharge rate of 50 L/h for 3 hours per day. The analyzed parameters included filtration effectiveness duration, bed volume (BV), head loss, permeability coefficient (K), and hydraulic retention time (HRT), as well as the removal efficiency of ammonium and phosphate, measured using spectrophotometric methods. The results showed that the filtration effectiveness duration reached 28.17 hours, with a total treated water volume of 1.4083 m³, equivalent to 66.45 BV. The head loss value of 0.50 m remained relatively stable throughout the operation, indicating no significant clogging of the media. The permeability coefficient of 3.12 × 10⁻⁴ m/s indicates moderate to high permeability, with an HRT ranging from 21 to 25 minutes. The biochar media achieved ammonium removal efficiencies of 65–75% and significantly reduced phosphate concentrations, with the highest efficiency observed at the initial stage before declining due to media saturation.

Abstract

The increasing concentration of ammonium (NH4+) in domestic wastewater contributes to eutrophication, depletion of dissolved oxygen, and disruption of aquatic ecosystem balance. Continuous treatment systems often face operational stability challenges due to fluctuations in flow rate and pollutant loading, thereby requiring filtration technologies that are both effective and hydraulically stable. This study aimed to analyze the filtration characteristics and ammonium adsorption efficiency of an upflow Mg2+-activated biochar filter system arranged in four serial compartments. Wood-based biochar was chemically modified using a 4.2 g/L MgCl2.6H2O solution for 70 minutes. The system was operated continuously for six days at a constant flow rate of 100 mL/min using domestic wastewater with ammonium concentrations ranging from 27.74 to 42.73 mg/L. The results showed a head loss of 0.0267 m per compartment and a total of 0.1068 m, indicating stable hydraulic conditions without significant clogging. The average hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 1.79 hours per compartment (9.78 hours total), providing adequate contact time for adsorption. Ammonium adsorption efficiency reached 94.28–96.53% and increased progressively across the compartments. It can be concluded that the Mg2+-activated biochar filter system demonstrated favorable hydraulic performance and high ammonium adsorption efficiency under continuous operation.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the concentration trends of ammonium (NH₄⁺) and phosphate (PO₄³⁻) during 20 days of operation in a two-compartment biochar filtration system under continuous flow conditions, and to compare the performance of magnesium-activated biochar and non-activated biochar. Samples were collected daily from the influent (IN), effluent compartment 1 (EF1), and effluent compartment 2 (EF2). Concentrations were analyzed using spectrophotometric methods, and removal efficiency was calculated based on the difference between influent and effluent concentrations.The results showed that magnesium-activated biochar exhibited more effective and stable performance compared to non-activated biochar. For ammonium removal, activated biochar achieved efficiencies of 65–75%, while non-activated biochar only reached 30–60% and experienced a faster decline in performance due to media saturation. In terms of phosphate removal, activated biochar achieved efficiencies of 25–40% through Mg–PO₄ complex formation and micro-precipitation mechanisms. In contrast, non-activated biochar was ineffective and even showed negative removal efficiencies (-100% to -250%) due to phosphate leaching.Overall, magnesium activation significantly enhanced adsorption capacity, extended the effective operational period, and delayed media saturation in the continuous filtration system. Therefore, chemical modification of biochar is strongly recommended to improve nutrient removal performance in domestic wastewater treatment systems.

Abstract

Peningkatan timbulan sampah dan keterbatasan kapasitas landfill menuntut strategi pengelolaan yang lebih efektif dan berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini bertujuan merumuskan strategi peningkatan efektivitas pengelolaan sampah berkelanjutan berdasarkan kondisi operasional eksisting. Data periode Januari–Mei 2025 menunjukkan total timbulan sampah sebesar 30.964 ton dengan rata-rata 213,54 ton/hari. Analisis mass balance menunjukkan 15.482 ton (50%) diolah menjadi kompos, 3.406 ton (11%) didaur ulang, dan 12.076 ton (39%) menjadi residu landfill dengan tingkat pemulihan material sebesar 61%. Pendekatan penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif dan evaluatif berdasarkan aspek teknis, ekonomi, dan lingkungan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa efektivitas sistem masih dibatasi oleh tingginya residu dan belum optimalnya pengolahan lindi. Strategi peningkatan difokuskan pada optimalisasi pemilahan di sumber, revitalisasi instalasi pengolahan lindi, pemanfaatan residu menjadi Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), serta penguatan sistem ekonomi sirkular. Strategi terintegrasi tersebut diproyeksikan mampu meningkatkan recovery rate di atas 70% dan memperkuat keberlanjutan operasional.

Abstract

Air limbah domestik mengandung nitrogen dalam bentuk amonium (NH4+) yang berpotensi menurunkan kualitas perairan apabila tidak diolah secara memadai. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis efektivitas sistem filtrasi biochar teraktivasi magnesium (Mg2+) dalam menyisihkan amonium dari air limbah domestik menggunakan reaktor aliran ke atas (upflow) yang terdiri atas empat kompartemen yang tersusun secara seri. Biochar biomassa kayu diaktivasi dengan larutan MgCl2 untuk meningkatkan adsorpsi dan sistem dioperasikan selama enam hari pada debit 100 mL/menit. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa konsentrasi NH4+ influen berfluktuasi pada kisaran 27,74–42,73 mg/L, sedangkan konsentrasi efluen relatif rendah dan stabil pada rentang 1,19–1,89 mg/L. Efisiensi penyisihan pada kompartemen akhir mencapai 94,28–96,53%, yang menunjukkan kemampuan sistem filtrasi efektif dalam menyisihkan NH4+ selama periode operasi. Efektivitas dipengaruhi oleh perpanjangan waktu kontak dalam sistem seri serta mekanisme pertukaran ion, interaksi elektrostatik, dan jembatan ionik oleh Mg2+ pada permukaan biochar. Secara keseluruhan, sistem menunjukkan efisiensi tinggi (>90%) dan stabil selama operasi, dengan tiga kompartemen telah memadai untuk mencapai kinerja optimal.
