This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of KWL (Know, Want, and Learned) strategy on the students’ reading comprehension. Quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The populationtaken was the seventh grade students of SMP PGRI 6 Malang. There were 54 students belonging to class VII C as the experimental group and VII A as the control group. Both pre and post tests were executed to obtain the data. The primary data were gained by comparing the result of post-test from the experimental group and that of the control group. The result of post-test exhibits that the sig. (2 tailed) or p- value is 0.000 lower than 0.05 (the level of significance). It means that the students who are taught by using KWL strategy have better reading comprehension than those who are not. The results of questionnaire show that the students give very good responses related to the implementation of KWL strategy. Overall, the results imply that the students’ reading comprehension can be effectively increased by using KWL strategy.

Due to the closure of Schools and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), HEIs had shifted the teaching and learning method from face-to-face to Screen-based learning, such as the use of Learning Management System or Moodle, and other applications. Moreover, screen-based learning, such as the use of Learning Management System or Moodle, and other applications the EFL students’ writing argumentative essays barriers in online learning as well as their learning strategies as alternative solutions to cope with them. The research employed descriptive qualitative design. The participants were six EFL students from the fifth semester who experienced writing argumentative essays during pandemic. The instrument used to gather the data was depth interviews about the issue of research. After analysis, it exposed three barriers in writing argumentative essays made by the participants, namely unusualness on the implementation of e-learning for writing, low bandwidth while learning, and students’ discouragement on writing argumentative essays. To overcome the barriers, students must be given a brief simulation previously before attending the real-time class, making classification and analogy for the complex materials up to the simple one, and get a relaxation during the argumentations class. So, it becomes a crystal clear that teacher must assist students to be aware of their weaknesses in writing argumentative essay class so that they can be more creative in writing. Besides, students are expected to be able to solve their barriers by maintaining well communication among the teachers and classmates to sharpen their understanding and implement the best learning styles individually.

Pengabdian pada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk membantu guru sekolah dasar kecamatan Sukun dalam pembuatan media pembelajaran berbasis seni dalam pengajaran bahasa. Mereka akan dilatih dan didampingi untuk membuat topeng berkarakter sebagai media untuk pembelajaran Bahasa yang diterapkan berdasarkan kurikulum 2013 serta penerapannya dalam pengajaran Bahasa di dalam kelas. Dengan adanya pelatihan ini diharapkan para guru mampu mengembangkan ide kreatif dalam membuat topeng karakter yang ingin disampaikan pada siswa, sehingga siswa lebih mudah memahami materi pelajaran. Metode yang akan digunakan dalam pelatihan adalah pemberian materi/pelatihan dan praktek Guru Sekolah Dasar se-Kecamatan Sukun Kota Malang. Hasil dari kegiatan pelatihan ini adalah menambah kepekaan dan kreatifitas guru dalam pembuatan media pembelajaran, terlihat dari partisipasi aktif saat pelaksanaan dan hasil karya yang ditampilkan dalam bentuk pertunjukan drama monolog dan dialog bertema sesuai karya topeng yang mereka buat. Kegiatan pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya bentuk strategi dan media pengajaran bahasa menggunakan segala kemungkinan dari berkarya topeng, yang kemudian akan dikembangkan dan diterapkan oleh para guru Sekolah Dasar dalam pembelajaran.

The teaching of English as a foreign language in Indonesia is widely developed time to time. In the teaching of English, reading comprehension has an important role, because through reading the text the students will acquire the knowledge of science and technology. Furthermore, the teachers have also have to measure the students’ performance in comprehending the reading text. The use of authentic assessment in the literal and inferential reading comprehension can help the students and also the teachers in comprehending what they learn in the text. The authentic assessment will reduce the tension of the students while they do reading test. Teachers also can implement the teaching learning process and the assessment efficiently. This paper aim to give some contribution to the readers how to select a good reading assessment that should be given for the university students. Hopefully, this paper can give a contribution to the teachers in Indonesia to be wise in selecting a good reading text and reading assessment in order to get the purpose of reading itself.

This paper mainly investigates the benefits of the implementation of Reformulation and Text Modelling in an EFL writing setting. Reformulation and Text Modeling (henceforth RTM) is intended to help EFL students understand better how to write academic texts to make their texts sound as nativelike as possible. Therefore, RTM was implemented in a writing class in which 35 students participated as the respondents of the study. They were treated with RTM and their essays were then analyzed to examine the effects of the implementation of RTM on their writing products. Besides, this study investigated further the students’ perception towards RTM in EFL writing settings. The findings of this study proved that RTM is beneficial to improve students’ writing performances and students have positive perceptions on RTM. The implications of the findings for language learning are also discussed.

This research aims at analyzing the implementation of a test of evaluating and test of creating as contained in the mid-term test and final test exercises during the era of Covid-19 pandemic by two English Foreign Language Lecturers. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a document analysis approach intended in analyzing the implementation of a test of evaluating and a test of creating as contained in the mid-term test and final test exercises. The source data of this study is the mid-term tests and final tests that were made during the era of the Covid-19 pandemic by two English Foreign Language Lecturers who teach in the English Literature department in a private University in Java. Data collecting technique is done using documentation and observation methods. The data analysis has been done by data coding. Then, the data is identified based on the categorization of level competency based on the Bloom taxonomy, particularly the evaluating and creating competency level. After that, the data will be analyzed and interpreted. The finding showed that 'test of evaluating' appeared only one item that requires students to review especially criticizing based on the qualitative standard and criteria. Meanwhile, the second finding was 'test of creating' in mid-term and final test patterned on the ability to produce a new thing by implying the processes inside 'creating' that are 'generating, planning, and producing’. By implicating Bloom's taxonomy, the lecturers are not only assisted but also expanded and sharpened the assessment, so the purpose of learning is not just teaching transfer but also covering all the cognitive processes needed in learning transfer.

Pandemi Covid-19 telah menyebabkan keterbatasan interaksi antar masyarakat, selain itu juga menyebabkan tidak dapat dilaksanakannya KSM-T kelompok 86 secara bersama-sama di satu lokasi sehingga terbagi menjadi 3 (tiga) lokasi yaitu, Kabupaten Malang, Kabupaten Sampang, dan Kabupaten Bima. Salah satu permasalahan yang ada dalam masyarakat, adalah kurangnya kepedulian tentang pentingnya menerapkan protokol kesehatan di masa pandemi Covid-19. Terkait hal tersebut mahasiswa KSM-T Kelompok 86 mengangkat program penerapan protokol kesehatan di masa pandmi Covid-19 yaitu:1) Meningkatnya kesadaran masyarakat akan pentingnya menerapkan protokol kesehatan; 2) Membantu Pemerintah Desa dan masyarakat sekitar untuk mencegah penularan Covid-19; 3) Membantu memutus rantai Covid-19 berbasis wilayah. Hasil dari pogram kerja yang telah diterapkan adalah terciptanya kesadaran masyarakat untuk mematuhi protokol kesehatan dalam upaya penanggulangan penyebaran Covid-19 di lokasi tempat tinggal masing-masing peserta KSM serta meningkatnya kesadaran dan pengetahuan tentang bahaya Covid-19 di kalangan masyarakat. Selain itu masyarakat mulai rutin memakai masker, handsanitizer, dan menjaga jarak ketika melakukan interaksi dengan masyarakat lainnya.

Even though stories are interesting material to learn, reading them still becomes a difficult skill because students are burdened and bored with piles of words when reading texts. Multimodal text is a solution to this issue that has been widely researched. One example of multimodal texts is the storyboard, which refers to a medium like a comic combining a sequence of storyline pictures and texts such as dialogues and narration. This teaching medium is assumed to have many advantages in improving students’ reading comprehension because students are engaged with the storyboarding activities. Meanwhile, research about how to utilize comics or storyboards in teaching reading comprehension is less well observed. This research aims to investigate the extent of the advantageous lesson ideas in the storyboard makers and the levels of reading comprehension skills that can be taught using the storyboard makers. Since the data is explored and collected from the websites, the design of this study is exploratory research. This study revealed that the two storyboard makers provide a large number of innovative lesson ideas that have been advantageous in teaching narrative reading comprehension. This research also implied that storyboarding can be applied to many levels of reading comprehension skills, including lexical, literal, inferential, applied, critical, and effective comprehension, as well as possibly beneficial for extensive reading.

The development of learning media that is interesting and relevant to the education system in Indonesia, although the ability of learners is a barrier today. Various development efforts are always done to complement the process of material oblivion that has been given. Learning methods and learning media are two things that cannot be ignored. Having English skills will add value in the context of human resources. But in an academic environment, English is a foreign language that needs to be mastered not only in communication but also regarding technology and science. The increasingly rapid technological development takes part in the learning development system. Many learning media are used to improve the ability of information or science. Furthermore, this study uses a learning management system (LMS) as one of the technology media to improve students’ vocabulary. The study focuses on the effort to improve vocabulary mastery by using a learning management system. The subjects of this study were the second-semester students from informatics department, Universitas Kanjuruhan Malang. The results of this study show that the students are easier to understand the vocabulary used in technology informatics fields. It can be seen that the results of their average of the final score are 85.00 improved higher than the previous score, before the use of LMS in the teaching vocabulary, the score is 65.00. It is expected that the result of this study can be one of the alternative ways to help students understand vocabulary easily.

Terkait dengan dilaksanakannya kurikulum 2013 baik di tingkat pendidikan dasar sampai dengan pendidikan tinggi, maka tim pengabdi melaksanakan pengabdian pada masyarakat yangbertujuan untuk memabantu para guru-guru khususnya di SDK Berita Hidup dan Guru-gurutaman kanak-kanak di gugus 11 kecamatan Sukun kota Malang untuk membuat mediapembelajaran yang kreatif dan inovatif yang akan membantu para guru-guru untuk mengajarakanketrampilan berbahasa untuk anak-anak usia dini. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan selama 4 minggudengan melibatkan semua guru-guru dari SDK Berita Hidup dan guru taman Kanak-Kanak digugus 11 kecamatan Sukun Kota Malang. Tim pengabdi memberikan pelatihan pembuatanmedia pembelajaran ini dengan memberikan prosedur pembuatan media pembelajaarn dan tatacara penggunaannya. Para peserta pelatihan membuat “home made book” dan media “Kokoru”,diterapkan dalam proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian padamasyarakat ini diharapkan dapat membantu para guru untuk meningkatkan kemampuan danmemudahkan para guru dalam pembelajaran bahasa yang aktif, kreatif, dan menyenangkan.Kata Kunci:Media Pengajaran, kurikulum 2013, guru TK dan SD
