Abstract

In addition to peatland fires and the conversion of peatland into plantations, a serious problem is the abrasion of peaty beaches. Abrasion is the result of sediment transport processes parallel to the shoreline(longshore sediment transport). Basically, the study of sediment transport begins by identifying the interacting properties of sediment and flow. The interaction in question is a condition where the flow beginsto cause the movement of the particles it passes through until a displacement occurs. The purpose of this research is to analyze the parameters resulting from theoretical calculations for peat material based on Shield theory. This research is a physical modeling without scale of the movement of particles in a channel. The initial process of sediment movement is simulated in a flume in the laboratory which has been given samples of peat sediment and sand sediment (as a comparison) at the bottom. Both samples are uniformgrains with 0.25 – 4.75 mm diameter. After the simulation is done, the results of the observation are compared with theoretical calculations. Based on calculations using the Shields theory, the shear stressvalues for peat sediments ranged from 0.124 – 1.523 N/m2 and shear velocity ranged from 0.011 – 0.039 m/s.Key words: Peat, Initiation motion, Shields Theory, Critical Shear Stress

Abstract

The advancement of technology in remote sensing sector has provided an alternative solution of data availability in hydrological modeling by satellite data appearance. However, the satellite data still has a weaknesses which is probably caused by several factors such as weather condition and the existence of other objects so that data quality is not good. Therefore, the aim of this research is to model the hydrological rainfall-rainoff with three types of rainfall that are satellite rainfall, ground rainfall and modified rainfall using IFAS program in Rokan Sub Watershed, Riau Province. At the verification phase, advanced and backwards simulation will be done respectively in 2005 and 2006 to test the reliability of the model. The result shows that hydrological modeling at calibration phase in 2006 has a better result in satellite rainfall than that of ground and modified rainfall, with coefficient of correlation (R) value 0,574, volume error (VE) 2,985%, and coefficient of efficiency (CE) 0,876.Keywords: rainfall-runoff modeling, satellite rainfall, ground rainfall, modified rainfall, IFAS.

Abstract

Weather and climate dynamics play a major role in spatial and temporal changes in groundwater availability. Temporally, groundwater availability changes are easier to feel such as the incidence of drought phenomena and water shortages that occur during certain months. This index is a benchmark to see the potential for fire in peatlands. This research was conducted in the Bengkalis regency of Riau Province using the method Keetch-Bryam Drought Index (KBDI). Peat fires can transform peatlands into farmland and settlements. The results of the drought Index analysis, the highest drought index value of the KBDI method occurred on Grid 8 in March 2016 of 1894.88 with extreme classification. The main factor for the occurrence of meteorological dryness is rainfall. Value of KBDI The higher the more the extreme. So the increase rainfall followed by decreasing the value of KBDI. The higher the temperature the greater the drought index value of the KBDI.Keywords: KBDI, Drought, Peatland Fire

Abstract

Abrasion and sedimentation are events that usually arise due to the movement and accumulation of material carried by ocean currents. Severe damage occurred in coastal areas such as on Bengkalis Island. Research on the initial motion of grains, especially on peat material, is very interesting to study. This study aims to analyze the relationship between flow velocity and grain diameter at the beginning of the movement of peat material grains. The initial motion of the peat material will be compared with the movement of the sand material. Modeling to analyze the initial motion of the grains on peat soil using Armfield Sediment Transport Demonstration Channel as flume. The flume velocity was varied starting from the lowest and symbolized by U, namely 1-7 (U=0.009890.10112 m/s) speed for peat material, and 4-10 (U=0.03973-0.18900 m/s) speed for sand material. The results showed that peat material experienced easier grain movement than sand material. This is due to the smaller spesific gravity of peat than sand. Proven based on the shield graph, the results of the critical shear stress on the sand sample No. 10 is below the shield graph, and on the peat material No. 10 is above the shield chart. Based on visual observations on peat sediments, it is found that the movement starts from the type of laminar flow, while in the sand sediments there is movement in the type of turbulent flow. Abstract

Padang city is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis because it lies at the confluence of two Indian and Asian plates . To prepare for the possibility of tsunami, some agencies have made evacuation planning . Marine and Fisheries Department and Tsunami Alert Community plan the building that can be used as an evacuation shelter in Padang . Marine and Fisheries Department has planed for as many as 152 buildings of shelters and Tsunami Alert Community has planed for as many as 93 buildings. This study evaluated the capacity of shelters that planned by Marine and Fisheries Department and Tsunami Alert Community  based on geographic information system with respect to the level of accessibility and capacity of shelters. Used to evaluate the level of accessibility of service area concept . Service area in this study means that refugees who are in the area has enough time to reach shelter before the tsunami . Used for the analysis of service area facilities Extension Network Analist contained in ArcGIS software . Assumption which used is if the speed of  the evacuation of people walk or run is 3.6 km/hour, the tsunami wave propagation time is 33 minutes and each resident requires an area of 1.65 m2 . In this study concluded that the capacity of the shelter which planned by  Marine and Fisheries Department and Tsunami Alert Community  is insufficient to accommodate prospective refugees in Padang . Based on data from the latest shelter building and the combination of the number of buildings that  planned by Marine and Fisheries Department and Tsunami Alert Community only able to accommodate 75 % of the population residing in the submergence area of the tsunami. Abstract

Availibility of water at each location are different. This is due to the climate divergence at those locations. The limitation of water availibility and the increasing of its demand have caused several problems, one of them is the deficit of water. Water deficiency is a huge matter on several locations especially provinces with peatlands. In order to analyze water availibility, it can be done by using Mock Method. Mock (1975) has introduced a formulation to calculate stream flow by using rainfall data, evapotranspiration, and hydrology characteristic of flow area to estimate the magnitude of flow in case those data is not affordable. The analysis results have shown that the optimated flow rate by using Mock model factor of 0,910 on August 2017 with 20% of dependable discharge was 1,036 m3/s and the measured discharge was 0,910 m3/s. However, the availibility of water does not have much direct influence towards the number of hotspots. Commonly, the hotspots occurred due to external factor, i.e. human activity. Keywords: Water availibility, Mock method, Hotspots
