Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between students' habit of taking notes and their writing ability at senior high school. This type of research is correlational quantitative research. The sample of this research is class XI, 1 class totaling 33 students. In determining the sample, the researcher used the Cluster Random Sampling technique. The research instrument was a questionnaire sheet to measure students' habit of taking notes and the writing test to measure students' writing ability. The data analysis technique was carried out by calculating the Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistic. The results of this study indicate that r-count = 0.358 with an interpretation of r 0.20 - 0.39 so that the level of relationship between the two variables is in the Low Correlation category. While the 5% significant test is 0.344. It is known that r-count is higher than r-table with a significant level of 5% (0,358>0,344) which mean Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. So the hypothesis of this research is accepted; is there any correlation between students’ habit of taking notes and their writing ability at senior high school? Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between students' habit of taking notes and their writing ability at senior high school.

Abstract

This study explored the Z Generation's beliefs and practices on early English language development for their children. The research aimed to understand parents' beliefs and practices in supporting early English language development for their children. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews and observations to gather in-depth data from Generation Z as parents with varying educational backgrounds. The findings indicate that Generation Z parents have a positive outlook on early English language learning, recognizing its importance for future educational and career opportunities. They belief that starting English education early is advantageous because children can learn new languages more effectively during their formative years. Parents also emphasized the importance of making the learning process enjoyable and engaging, using strategies aligned with Bruner's modes of learning, enactive, iconic, and symbolic. This study highlights the proactive role Generation Z parents play in their children's early English education and provides insights into effective practices that could benefit educators and policymakers in promoting early language learning.

Abstract

Considering the students’ emotion is essential in having the students to learn. Most Minangkabaunese students do not like being dictated for any activities with a thousand words. This paper is aimed at finding out some techniques of using intertextuality to balance lecturer-students’ power relations when communicating learning tasks. This research is qualitative with content analysis. Data were collected from six lecturers, teaching at Sekolah Tinggi Keguruandan Ilmu Pendidikan, Persatuan Guru Republik Indonesia (STKIP PGRI), selected purposively. Techniques of observation and video recording were used in collecting data. The discourse was transcribed and categorized into some techniques of using examples based on the content called content analysis.A contextual analysis was used to show lecturer-students’ power relations and formulated proposition.   Findings show that the techniques of using intertextuality includeShowing Techniques of Doing Tasks (STDT), Giving Example of the Task Topic (GETT), and UERS. Using STDT  had an impact on students’ readiness to learn. Meanwhile, Using GETT enhances students’ language development. Finally, Using Example of Real Situations (UERS)  gives students’ opportunity to have a learning experience. Moreover, the techniquescause the lecturer and students to have a balanced power relation. The findings are significant for teachers or lecturers as guidance to communicate with students efficiently and effectively. They are expected not to dominate communication when interacting with them, especially to those who have excessive individualism. Other researchers who are interested in studying this topic are expected to be inspired to research this area viewed from other viewpoints.

Abstract

This study investigated the needs of students in a blended assessment model oriented towards self-directed learning for Basic Reading in higher education. The data were collected through a questionnaire for 55 students who took the Basic Reading subject. The researcher employed a random sampling technique to select samples from a private university in Padang City, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The questionnaire was distributed through a WhatsApp Group. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics analysis. The results indicated that students highly need a blended assessment model for Basic Reading, presented in a blended learning format, to promote their self-directed learning. They need to implement an authentic blended assessment model oriented toward self-directed learning in the Basic Reading subject, as it helps students become more independent.
