Abstract

This study aims to describe the sociocultural norms of interaction, interpretation and transformation in the culture of communication among Toba Batak speakers in Jambi City. This research was conducted in the city of Jambi, the source of the data in this study were the Toba Batak people who had settled in Jambi City and the Toba Batak people who lived within a certain time or had a certain limit. The approach taken is a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The data used in this study are in the form of fulfilling sociocultural and speech norms or conversations conducted by the Toba Batak language-speaking community, in the process of interaction and interpretation at the HKBP Agave church, traditional Toba Batak events, Toba Batak community organizations and Aur Duri Market. . Data collection techniques in this study used free speech, note-taking and record-keeping. The results of this study are to describe sociocultural norms of interaction, interpretation and cultural transformation in communication among Toba Batak speakers in Jambi City. Then the results of the researchers show that there are interacting sociocultural norms.

Abstract

In the face of the scarcity of linguistic studies on Batak Toba language, this study tries to contribute by investigating how Batak Toba students’ local language and mother tongue’s elements are transferred to their English as a foreign language output. Specifically, this study aims to describe the transfer and interference of Batak Toba and Indonesian as first and/or second language and how they influence learners’ English as a third language. The study observed 15 English Education programme students who were selected via snowball sampling and analysed the way the students speak and translate a set of phrases to their respective second and third languages. Results indicated that the students’ first and second languages interferes with their English language performance at the phonological, morphological, and syntactic levels. The novelty of this study is that it offers a detailed investigation of how students whose first language, Batak Toba, and second language, Indonesian, interfere with the foreign language that is a mandatory subject in the country’s formal education system, namely English. Recommendations for teachers, particularly teachers of Indonesian learners whose students are primarily bilingual and multilingual, are discussed.

Abstract

In the era of 4.0, podcasts have become a new and interesting medium of information. For this reason, this study aims to describe (1) the types of illocutionary discourse acts, (2) the types of illocutionary discourse acts in Podcasts on the Youtube channel, and (3) their advantages as material for pragmatic shows in universities. The research method uses descriptive qualitative methods with the help of pragmatic analysis. The source of information in this study is the discourse expressed by speakers and presenters on podcasts on the Jk-W and Nd-M Podcast Youtube channels. Information sorting method in this research is for nothing listening procedure (SBLC) and note-taking strategy. The examination instrument used in this research is the scientist himself (human instrument). Given the information check, three ends can be drawn. First, the types of illocutionary discourse acts found are assertive, mandated, commissive, and expressive and announcements. Second, the elements of illocutionary discourse acts found are serious, beautiful, fun, and problematic. Third, the thing that arises because of this exam is through teaching materials that can be used as pragmatic learning in higher education.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan TikTok sebagai media pembelajaran terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur di SMP Negeri 5 Muaro Jambi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pretest-posttest control group design dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Hasil menunjukkan ada perbedaan rata-rata gain skor pada kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol, di mana kelas eksperimen memperoleh rata-rata skor sebesar 0,4500 sedangkan kelas kontrol memperoleh rata-rata gain skor sebesar 0,1657.  Hasil tabel t-test or equality of means didapat nilai signifikansi (2-tailed) antara gain skor kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol sebasar 0,000 ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai signifikansi (2-tailed) yang diperoleh dari gain skor kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol lebih kecil dari 0,05. Temuan ini menyuratkan penggunaan TikTok sebagai media pembelajaran memiliki pengaruh terhadap kemampuan menulis teks prosedur siswa kelas VII di SMP Negeri 5 Muaro Jambi.

Abstract

Background. 21st century education emphasizes the importance of developing high-level thinking skills (HOTS) for students, including analysis, evaluation and synthesis skills. Seamless learning, which integrates technology and media, becomes relevant in this context because it creates a dynamic and connected learning experience. Purpose. This research aims to measure the increase in students’ critical thinking abilities through seamless learning using quasi-experimental methods. By adopting this approach, the research seeks to provide empirical evidence about the effectiveness of seamless learning in improving students’ critical thinking abilities. Method. This research methodology takes a quantitative approach with quasi-experimental methods. Data was collected from a school in West Sumatra, with research subjects being grade 7 students. Data collection was carried out through critical thinking ability test instruments before and after the learning period. Analysis was carried out using the t-test in SPSS to compare the two groups. Results. The results of the analysis showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups, with a greater increase in critical thinking ability scores in the experimental group. The resulting t value was 0.05, with a p value of less than 0.05, indicating that the difference between the two groups did not occur by chance. This confirms that seamless learning has a positive impact in improving students’ critical thinking abilities.   Conclusion. These findings highlight the success of seamless learning in improving students’ critical thinking abilities. However, this study has limitations, such as the relatively small sample size and limited duration of the intervention. Further research with larger sample sizes is recommended to deepen this understanding.

Abstract

Background. Humans as social creatures use language to interact with each other. In the interaction process, language can be spoken and written. Spoken language is expressed in direct speech, while written language is expressed in written form. The Toba Batak people have local wisdom in the form of expressions, namely Pantun hangoluan, tois hamagoan. This means that if we live our lives with polite and courteous behavior, we will have a good life. Purpose. This research aims to determine language politeness in the Toba Batak community in Jambi City. Method. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The data source for this research is Toba Batak speakers in Arisan Marga, Parsahutaon, Martandang, and Lapo. Data collection techniques in this research used listening and note-taking techniques. The listening technique is carried out by listening and recording the speech, then the note-taking technique is by recording important data from the informant's speech. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman method, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification. Results. The results of this research found 94 data that complied with the principles of language politeness maxims. In Arisan Marga there are 29 data, in Parsahutaon there are 22 data, in Martandang there are 19 data, and in Lapo there are 24 data. Compliance with language politeness is mostly dominated by the maxim of wisdom with 39 data, the maxim of agreement with 17 data, the maxim of respect with 16 data, the maxim of generosity with 14 data, the maxim of sympathy with 6 data, and the maxim of humility with 2 data. Conclusion. From the research results it can be concluded that there are more maxims of wisdom than the maxims of humility and the maxims of sympathy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk campur kode dan fungsi campur kode yang terjadi di Pasar Baru Talang Banjar Kec.Jambi Timur. Proses pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode teknik rekam dan teknik catat. Adapun penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif berbentuk kualitatif, dengan mengklasifikasi, menganalisis serta mendeskripsikan bentuk campur kode serta fungsi campur kode dalam interaksi pedagang dan pembeli. Hasil penelitian yang ditemukan adanya campur kode bahasa Batak, bahasa Melayu dalam berkomunikasi. Penyisipan tersebut berbentuk kata, kata berimbuhan awalan dan kata berimbuhan akhiran. Selanjutnya fungsi campur kode dalam interaksi sosial jual beli pedagang dan pembeli di Pasar Baru Talang Banjar ialah dengan adanya tuturan pedagang yang menggunakan bahasa utama mereka bertujuan untuk menunjukkan identitasnya, menarik perhatian pembeli, untuk kelangsungan komunikasi dengan pembeli agar terdengar lebih akrab, serta bagi pembeli bertujuan mendapatkan harga paling murah dari pedagang. Kata Kunci: Campur Kode, Bentuk, Fungsi, Pasar This research aims to describe the forms of code mixing and the function of code mixing that occurs in Pasar Baru Talang Banjar, East Jambi District. The data collection process was carried out using recording techniques and note-taking techniques. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, by classifying, analyzing and describing the forms of code mixing and the function of code mixing in the interaction of traders and buyers. The results of the research found that there was a mixture of Batak and Malay language codes in communication. The insertion is in the form of words, words with prefixes and words with suffixes. Furthermore, the function of code mixing in the social interaction of buying and selling of traders and buyers at Pasar Baru Talang Banjar is that the speech of traders using their main language aims to show their identity, attract the attention of buyers, for continuity of communication with buyers so that they sound more familiar, and for buyers the aim is to Get the cheapest prices from traders. Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan fonetis vokal dan diftong bahasa Kerinci Desa Hiang Tinggi. Jenis penelitiannya kualitatif deskriptif. Data berupa bahasa Kerinci Desa Hiang Tinggi berdasarkan daftar kosakata oleh Sever Pop. Lokasinya di Desa Hiang Tinggi. Kehadiran peneliti sebagai pengamat. Instrument yaitu peneliti sendiri. Untuk memperoleh data, peneliti memilih beberapa orang sebagai informan. Sumber data berasal dari tuturan penutur asli bahasa Kerinci Desa Hiang Tinggi. Metode pengumpulan data yaitu metode cakap dengan teknik pancing dan metode simak dengan teknik rekam. Teknik pengujian keabsahan data yaitu triangulasi dibantu 2 orang penutur asli Hiang Tinggi bukan seorang informan untuk mengecek kebenaran data yang dikumpul. Hasil penelitian, ada 6 vokal : [a][i][u][e][o][ǝ], 9 diftong : [eo][ai][au][ao][ea][ae][eu][oe][oi]. Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa bahasa Kerinci Desa Hiang Tinggi penggunaan diftong lebih banyak dibandingkan vokal.
