Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the multimodal communication of waiters and waitresses at three restaurants in Tabanan, Bali Province, in applying higher-level actions in serving foreign guests and investigating the functions of the higher-level actions of waiters and waitresses in serving the foreign guests. This study used theories proposed by Fishman (1972) cited in Suandi & Indriani (2016) on functions of using verbal and nonverbal communication, Krees and Van Leewuen 2006) on multimodal communication, and Norris (2004) on higher-level actions. The subjects of this study were four waiters and two waitresses who were working at three different restaurants in Tabanan regency. The results of this study showed that in each conversation, there were many sequences of higher-level actions used by waiters or waitresses to serve the foreign guests. The waiters and waitresses used a sequence of modes alternately or simultaneously in their higher-level actions, depending on the situation. The functions of waiters or waitresses’ higher-level actions in serving foreign guests made their messages clearer to foreign guests, and this made the waiters or waitresses’ messages more believable to the foreign guests.

Abstract

The teacher's role as a learning process facilitator requires using appropriate tools to assist students in learning faster and to engage them better. In light of recent developments in educational technology, incorporating digital learning tools appears to be an intriguing approach. Nevertheless, not all teachers are familiar with and might be inexperienced with such digital learning tools that still require guidance in utilizing them to design their English-speaking lessons. One of those tools that can assist learners in improving their English competencies, specifically speaking as the notably challenging aspects of language proficiency is the Cake App. This study intended to develop infographics of the Cake App-based teaching speaking ideas for teaching 12th-grade tourism vocational high school students, in which one English teacher was involved as the research subject. This Design and Development study employed the DDE model (Richey & Klein, 2014), using a quantitative technique to analyze the data. The judgments indicated that the infographics were categorized as ‘excellent products,’ with content evaluations obtaining a percentage of 89% and 91%, including media and design evaluations achieving 90% and 95%. Furthermore, the participating teacher noted that the Cake App offered a novel approach to utilizing a real-world tool for speaking instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the teaching strategy preferences implemented by male and female English teachers at senior highs bb School, focusing on how gender affects the choice of teaching strategies. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data was collected through observations, teaching strategy checklists, anecdotal notes, and in-depth interviews with English teachers at the school. The findings show that male teachers mostly use student-centered strategies such as direct explanation and exercises with training on learning strategies, including social-affective learning strategies, projects, problems, discovery, active learning, integrated learning, and flipped learning. Meanwhile, female teachers tend to adopt more contemporary and student-centered strategies such as project-based learning and the use of varied media, assignments, and female teachers use more cognitive and metacognitive strategies, but the application of other strategies such as project-based learning, active learning, flipped learning, and competency-based learning and differentiated learning is still very limited. This difference suggests that gender plays an important role in shaping teaching strategy preferences, with male teachers more willing to try different methods, especially technology-based and collaborative ones, while female teachers tend to choose contemporary and more interactive strategies. The study concludes that recognizing and understanding these gender-based differences can inform curriculum development and professional growth for teachers, ultimately supporting more effective English language teaching and learning in similar educational contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

As an antagonist in C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Queen Jadis is narratively required to be depicted as a negative character. This study aimed to analyze Queen Jadis’ negative traits and how they strengthened her role as an antagonist through textual analysis in Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive qualitative data analysis model. The study showed that Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless, arrogant, authoritarian, and cowardly, creating conflict and tension in the storyline. Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless and arrogant to those weaker than her. She destroyed the entire world of Charn by using the Deplorable Word for her desires. When brought to the human world, she showed a dominant trait and used her power to control others. Her cowardice was most strongly shown when she fled at the sign of defeat. While these results show that Queen Jadis’s characterizations made her a proper antagonist for the children-heroes in the novel, her failure in conquering the worlds beyond Charn and loss of magical power function as punishment for these negative traits, sending a moral message to avoid building evil characters for the readers.
