Abstract

This study aims to explore the teaching strategy preferences implemented by male and female English teachers at senior highs bb School, focusing on how gender affects the choice of teaching strategies. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data was collected through observations, teaching strategy checklists, anecdotal notes, and in-depth interviews with English teachers at the school. The findings show that male teachers mostly use student-centered strategies such as direct explanation and exercises with training on learning strategies, including social-affective learning strategies, projects, problems, discovery, active learning, integrated learning, and flipped learning. Meanwhile, female teachers tend to adopt more contemporary and student-centered strategies such as project-based learning and the use of varied media, assignments, and female teachers use more cognitive and metacognitive strategies, but the application of other strategies such as project-based learning, active learning, flipped learning, and competency-based learning and differentiated learning is still very limited. This difference suggests that gender plays an important role in shaping teaching strategy preferences, with male teachers more willing to try different methods, especially technology-based and collaborative ones, while female teachers tend to choose contemporary and more interactive strategies. The study concludes that recognizing and understanding these gender-based differences can inform curriculum development and professional growth for teachers, ultimately supporting more effective English language teaching and learning in similar educational contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

As an antagonist in C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Queen Jadis is narratively required to be depicted as a negative character. This study aimed to analyze Queen Jadis’ negative traits and how they strengthened her role as an antagonist through textual analysis in Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive qualitative data analysis model. The study showed that Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless, arrogant, authoritarian, and cowardly, creating conflict and tension in the storyline. Queen Jadis was depicted as ruthless and arrogant to those weaker than her. She destroyed the entire world of Charn by using the Deplorable Word for her desires. When brought to the human world, she showed a dominant trait and used her power to control others. Her cowardice was most strongly shown when she fled at the sign of defeat. While these results show that Queen Jadis’s characterizations made her a proper antagonist for the children-heroes in the novel, her failure in conquering the worlds beyond Charn and loss of magical power function as punishment for these negative traits, sending a moral message to avoid building evil characters for the readers.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain the preference of teaching strategies most frequently used by male and female English teachers at SMAN 1 Tejakula. The teaching strategies recommended by Merdeka Curriculum were the focus of this study. Through a qualitative method, data collection was conducted using 3 different instruments: teaching strategy checklist, observation checklist, and interviews. There were 4 subjects involved in this study: 2 male teachers and 2 female teachers. The findings showed that male teachers showed a preference for the Problem-Based Learning teaching strategy based on the grade level they taught. On the other hand, female teachers showed a tendency towards a combination of Project-Based Learning and Discovery Learning teaching strategies due to the ability or character of the students themselves and the grade level being taught. A unique thing was also found in this study, where male teachers and female teachers both like Cooperative Learning and Social Affective teaching strategies, where teachers utilize collaboration between students and emphasize the socio-emotional aspects of students during the learning process. However, it cannot be denied that challenges such as the lack of physical and non-physical school resources can affect the implementation of certain strategies. The findings are expected to be a reference for the development of teacher training programs and for improving the quality of English teaching in schools.

Abstract

Nowadays, incorporating technology into language instruction is crucial for enhancing students' speaking abilities, particularly in a professional setting. One of the fundamental skills in learning English is speaking, which is crucial for students in the tourism industry attending vocational high schools (SMK). This is due to the fact that the tourism industry needs employees who can interact with foreign visitors in a variety of service contexts. This study employs the ADDE (Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation) learning approach in conjunction with the design and development (DnD) model put forth by Richey & Klein, (2005). The goal of the design and development strategy is to produce an attractive infographic that will aid English teachers at Buleleng's vocational high schools in better understanding how to teach speaking with CakeApp. The goal of this project is to create infographics that teach speaking skills to SMK Pariwisata class XII students using the Cakeapp application. In addition, the results of expert validation show that the resulting infographics are of very high quality, with an average validation value of 91.5% given by experts. Based on these findings, it shows that the use of CakeApp-based infographics helps tourism students practice speaking skills effectively. The practical implication of this study is that teachers at tourism vocational schools can use this CakeApp-based infographic to support students' speaking learning process in class.

Abstract

The implementation of differentiated instruction is the focus of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia, especially when integrated with technology. The aim is to adapt education to the needs, abilities, and interests of each student. This study explores how English teachers at SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar implement differentiated instruction integrated with technology in the classroom and how this affects students' beliefs in learning English. The method approach used in this study is a mixed-method approach, where qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, while quantitative data were collected through student questionnaires adapted from Horwitz's BALLI framework. The observation results showed that teachers differentiated content, process, and product based on student profiles and learning contexts. As a support for various learning strategies, this study integrated technological tools such as WhatsApp, Google Translate, Quizizz, and Canva. The questionnaire results showed that students had very high beliefs in their language learning abilities when faced with differentiated instruction supported by technology. These findings indicate that the learning model increased students' motivation and self-perception in learning English. This study highlights the importance of teacher adaptability and strategic use of technology to foster a student-centered learning environment that is aligned with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum.
