Abstract

The general objective pursued is to describe and to relate the students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Vocational High School in Singaraja. The design applied is a quantitative research. There were 90 students recruited using cluster quota sampling. The data were gathered using scales and reading test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases: descriptively and inferentially. Whereas inferentially, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading anxiety is at high level while reading self-efficacy and reading competency are at the low levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely are negative and positive significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant (  =0.81; α =0.01).

Abstract

The current research objectives were to describe and to relate the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 8 Singaraja. The subject were the students in the eight-grade students. This research was designed a quantitative research. The data were gathered using reading interest scale, reading self-efficacy scale, and objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases, namely: descriptively, that is the description consisted of central tendency and inferentially, that is the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency on high-order-items are at the moderate levels;2) the relations pair-wisely between the students’ reading interest and reading self-efficacy, students reading interest and reading competency, the students’ reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are positively and significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading interest and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant.

Abstract

There are still many students who do not follow online learning well. Students who are not focused on online learning. In addition, there are still many teachers who find it challenging to design appropriate learning for students. This will have an impact on learning activities that cannot run optimally, especially in English subjects. The negative impact of this is that the ability of students will decrease. This study aims to analyze the teacher's ability to prepare EFL lesson plans through Google Classroom, the teacher's obstacles in compiling EFL lesson plans through Google Classroom, and students' obstacles in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) through Google Classroom. The method used in this study is a mixed-method. The method used to collect data is observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The instrument used to collect data is a questionnaire. Before data collection, the three instruments were validated and tested empirically. The technique used to analyze the data is descriptive qualitative and quantitative statistics. The results showed that the ability of teachers to prepare EFL lesson plans through Google Classroom was still lacking. In addition, EFL students also encounter obstacles in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) through Google Classroom.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan dan menjelaskan (1) bentuk tindak tutur guru Bahasa Inggris, (2) bagaimana guru menyadari tindak tutur dalam komunikasi pembelajaran, (3) dan fungsi pedagogik dari tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris dalam proses belajar mengajar di dalam kelas pada SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, peneliti menggunakan rancangan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah dua guru Bahasa Inggris. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah ujaran-ujaran yang digunakan selama proses belajar mengajar berlangsung di dalam kelas. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode observasi dan wawancara. Kemudian data ditulis dalam bentuk tulisan, kemudian dipilih yang berdasarkan tujuan dari penelitian, kemudian dituliskan ke lembar data, lalu diterjemahkan dan dianalisa dengan menggunakan teori tindak tutur yang dikemukakan oleh Searle. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan ada empat macam tindak tutur yaitu representatif, direktif, ekspresif, dan komisif. Tidak ilokusi yang paling sering muncul adalah direktif (72,7%), sedangkan tindak ilokusi yang paling sedikit muncul adalah komisif (0.7%). Fungsi tindak ilokusi yang digunakan oleh guru sangan bervariasi. Jenis tindak ilokusi yang digunakan oleh guru yaitu menginformasikan, menyatakan, mengumumkan, mengklarifikasi, menjelaskan, mengkonfirmasi, bertanya, meminta, menyuruh, melarang, memotivasi, menyarankan, mengingatkan, memperingatkan, memperbolehkan, menjanjikan, menyapa, memuji, berterimakasih, mengapresiasi, dan bergurau.Data menunjukan fungsi ilokusi yang sering muncul adalah menyuruh dalam bentuk direktif (43,9%). Tuturan yang digunakan oleh guru dinyatakan sebagian besar merupakan tuturan langsung dari pada tuturan tidak langsung. Fungsi pedagogik dari tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris dibagi menjadi tiga bagian yaitu: fungsi mengontrol, mengorganisasikan, memotivasi/mengevaluasi.Kata Kunci : Klasifikasi tindak tutur, proses belajar mengajar, tindak tutur This study aimed to describe and explain (1) the types of speech acts produced by English teachers, (2) how the teachers' speech acts are realized in the instructional communication, and (3) the pedagogical functions of speech acts that performed by the English teachers in teaching and learning process at SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja. To achieve these objectives the researcher used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects were two English teachers. The data collection in this study was using observation and interviews. Then the data were transcribed into the written form, selected to fit the objectives of the study, recorded into the data sheets, interpreted and analyzed using the theory of speech acts proposed by Searle. The research findings show that there were four kinds of speech acts performed by the teacher, namely representatives, directives, expressives, and commisives. The most frequently used illocutionary acts were directives (72.7%), while the least frequent illocutionary acts were commisives (0.7%). The illocutionary forces performed by the teacher were varied. The illocutionary forces that was performed by the English teachers were informing, stating, announcing, clarifying, explaining, confirming, questioning, requesting, commanding, prohibiting, motivating, suggesting, reminding, warning, permitting, promising, greeting, praising, thanking, appreciating, and joking. The frequency shows that commanding (43.9%) was the most dominant illocutionary forces of directives produced by the teachers. Furthermore, the teachers were found to use more direct speech acts than the indirect ones. Abstract

In developing students’ writing competency, teacher’s strategy and engagement in writing process is very crucial. The strategy of teaching writing should not only focus on language aspects but also should help the students in developing their critical thinking and problem solving skill. The current study investigated the effect of midful learning on students’ writing comptency. This study was an experiment study with posttest only control group design. 71 EFL students were involved in this study. In collecting the data,this study used writing competency test and rubric for assessing. The collected data were analzyed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of descprtive statistics showed that the mean score of writing competency of experiment group (82.25)  was higher than the control group (78.67). A significant mean difference is identified from the result of t test (Sig. .005.) The result of effect size test showed a medium effec (.68) t. Thus, it can be concluded that mindful learning significantly affects students’ writing competency. Discussions and suggestions are further presented.

Abstract

Students who has special needs, need to be taught with special education. The fact is students with special education cannot put in the class with students in general school especially in the learning activity. One of the students with SEN that needs more attention during the classroom activity is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In this case, using kinds of reinforcements as a strategy to manage student’s behavior and also catch student’s attention during the learning process is needed. Therefore, this study aims to identify types of reinforcement usually used by the English teacher at SLB Negeri 1 Denpasar, in order to reveal what kind of reinforcement that usually used by the English Teacher for students with ASD and how the implementation of the reinforcement used. This research utilized a qualitative approach and descriptive method. The subject of this study was one English teacher at Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) Negeri 1 Denpasar. The data collection using reinforcement checklist, interview guide, and audio recording. This research showed, there are 3 types of reinforcement the teacher usually used, such positive verbal reinforcement, positive non-verbal reinforcement, and tangible reinforcement. The Implementation was looking at the students need such: attract students’ interest, appreciation and control students’ behavior.

Abstract

There are still many students who have low reading comprehension. This is because students are less interested in reading. In addition, students also do not have the habit of reading, which affects students’ abilities. This study aims to analyze the dual relationship between reading perception, reading interest, and students’ reading habits during the Covid-19 pandemic. EFL learning is carried out through an online platform, namely Google Classroom. The population of this study was the seventh-grade students who found 70 students. The design used is a quantitative research design. Data was collected using the Reading Perception Scale, Reading Interest Scale, and Reading Habits Scale. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using Multiple Correlations from a combination of predictor variables and criteria. The results showed that the students’ reading perception was moderate; moderate reading interest; sensible reading habits; and four the double correlation of reading perception and reading interest on reading habits proved to have a significant and high positive correlation (R = 0.851 with = 0.01). This research implies that students need to improve their reading experience, reading motivation, time spent reading, and frequent reading activities. This also has implications for EFL teachers to provide learning materials and appropriate learning approaches/methods/techniques in reading skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis jenis metafora yang digunakan dalam segmen berita ekonomi dan bisnis di Portal Berita Jakarta Globe dan mengidentifikasi jenis metafora yang paling banyak digunakan di antara segmen berita ekonomi dan bisnis di Portal Berita Jakarta Globe. Desain penelitian ini adalah analisis wacana dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Objek penelitian ini adalah metafora. Subyek penelitian ini adalah segmen berita ekonomi dan bisnis di Portal Berita Jakarta Globe. Dalam mengidentifikasi metafora tertentu, metode yang digunakan adalah MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure). Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan pengumpulan dokumen. Instrumen proses pengumpulan data yang digunakan peneliti, catatan, dan daftar periksa. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan model Miles dan Huberman. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada empat jenis metafora yang digunakan dalam segmen berita ekonomi dan bisnis di Portal Berita Jakarta Globe. Mereka adalah metafora struktural, orientasional, ontologis, dan antropomorfik. Metafora struktural muncul sebagai yang paling banyak digunakan dalam segmen berita ekonomi dan bisnis Portal Berita Jakarta Globe dengan total 61 metafora atau 78,20% dari metafora yang dianalisis.

Abstract

Jepang merupakan salah satu negara maju di kawasan Asia yang sangat menjaga budaya dan tradisi.Hal ini menyebabkan orang-orang Jepang menjadi fanatik terhadap penggunaan bahasa ibu mereka dalamberinteraksi. Namun seiring dengan perkembangan globalisasi, Jepang moderen merasa perlu untuk mengembangkankemampuan dalam berkomunikasi dengan dunia luar secara efektif. Untuk itu, bahasa Inggris yangsudah diakui sebagai bahasa pergaulan utama di kancah internasional menjadi salah satu prioritas dalam kurikulumpembelajaran bahasa asing di Jepang dan menariknya Bahasa Inggris selalu menjadi pilihan favorituntuk dipelajari dari tingkat sekolah dasar sampai universitas di Jepang. Perkembangan metode pendidikanbahasa Inggris di Jepang juga cukup signifikan; dimulai dari mengadaptasi metode grammar-focused teachingsampai communicative language teaching. Abstract

The Covid 19 pandemic makes learning should be done via online (distance learning) which has different characteristics than before. The basic difference is on the existence of interaction during teaching and learning process. This research aims at investigating the students’ reading proficiency profile and classical learning mastery of eighth graders in MTS N 3 Jembrana after online learning is implemented. This research researh was categorized into descriptive quantitative. This research used survey sampling technique so 73 respondents were selected. The data of reading proficiency were collected by using test in the form of multiple choice. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by calculating the general and dimension mean of reading proficiency. This research discovers that 1) students’ reading competency is categorized into avarage, but specifically, finding main idea is categorized into average, finding textual reference is categorized into low, finding implixit information is categorized into low, finding explicit information is categorized very high, and finding sinonym and antonym is categorized in to very high and 2) the reading classical mastery is 41,01%. It implies that teaching reading online should be done based on communicative teaching reading principles
