Abstract

The Covid-19 outbreak has "forced" face-to-face teaching and learning to be entirely online. This situation also affects prospective EFL teachers in conducting teaching practicums. This study aims to analyze prospective EFL teachers using code-switching in online discussions through WhatsApp group chats. Code-switching is a popular language feature commonly used in communication. Furthermore, this research aims to identify the types of code-switching according to Poplack's theory and to find out the code-switching function based on Sert's theory. This type of research is qualitative. The subjects of this study were six prospective EFL teachers and their students. Primary data was collected from online discussions of student teachers through their WhatsApp chat groups, and then the discussions were transcribed into transcripts. The technique used to analyze the data is descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The first study's results in terms of types of code-switching revealed that all participants practiced code-switching in online teaching and learning through WhatsApp group chats. The discussion provides three types of code-switching based on Poplack's theory: tag-switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Furthermore, tag switching is often used in online discussions.

Abstract

The research conducted in Pegayaman is a sociolinguistic study with anatural approach. Through this research, the code choice done by the Moslemspeech community of Pegayaman was intended to be uncovered. The subjects ofthe study under investigation reside in Pegayaman village of Sukasada sub-district,Buleleng, Bali. The problems are formulated as follows: 1) What code(s) are foundin this community, and which is the most dominant one to be chosen for use in theseven language domains being studied?; 2) How is the most dominantly chosencode used in their daily verbal interaction?; 3) What do they think of and say aboutthe choice of the code, and its inheritance to the following generation?; and 4) Whydo they insist on maintaining to behave verbally as such, as is indicated by theanswers to questions (1), (2), and (3)?The results of the data analysis empirically show the followings: (1)Balinese language (BL), Indonesian language (IL), and Arabic are three main codeswhich are used, and among them BL is the code that is dominantly chosen and usedto communicate verbally; (2) There is a diglossic language situation in this speechcommunity, especially when they are interacting verbally using BL; (3) There is akind of code mixing phenomenon; (4) A number of terms of address and terms ofreference found which are exclusively Pegayaman in nature; among them are Dané,Tuan and Guru; (5) Some particles like hee, see, and laa are found and mostly usedby women of older age which, sociolinguistically speaking, function as the markersof their social group identity. With regard to the use of Bahasa Bali as well as with the teaching or thepassing down of the language to the following generation, it is found out that theMoslem speech community of Pegayaman has a positive point of view. Such aview has been exemplified by the penglingsirs and also by the other informal andformal leaders of the village in appreciating and using the language. Anotherdetermining factor is the support given by the local government. The mostimportant factor among these, however, is that because the people of this Moslemspeech community identify themselves as being Balinese. The dominant use of BL in verbal interaction can be explained as anattitude that indicates an adherence of this Moslem speech community to BL. It canbe concluded that the ultimate causation of their verbal behavior (starting fromchoosing BL, using it in verbal interaction, until passing it down) is to maximizetheir fitness—to maintain their ‘Balinese’ existence. By using BL, they want toshow their identity (either social or ethnic), and their typical Balinese Moslemculture of Pegayaman. Individually or communally, this kind of identity is realizedas an important factor to maintain their existence among the communities of non-Moslem Balinese.

Abstract

Literature confirms that various errors made by Indonesian learners of English as a foreign language are challenging phenomenon which needs our concern. The errors found are both in speech and composition production, which portray the effectiveness of language learning. Students language that belongs neither native nor target language is called interlanguage (IL). The focus of this study is to present the empirical results of the investigation on the IL features of students' speech production. It aims to describe the types and aspects of the native language (NL) and target language (TL) influences and to explain the possible causes of IL production. The data were in the form of 144 ill-formed utterances. In gathering the data, the students were given a guided picture with the topic ‘Last Holiday’. The students' speech was video recorded. The ill-formed utterances were collected, identified, described, and explained. The result of the study shows that both of their NL and TL influenced the students' interlanguage production at the syntactical level.

Abstract

Abstract

Almost every language has its own varieties. In any verbal interaction, the use of certain varietiesis determined by such social variables as social status, age, sex, and education. Besides these socialvariables, there are also affecting factors such as psychological factor of the participant, geographicalfactor, and socio-cultural factor of a speech community. While communicating, a speaker uses acertain variety of a language in order to show his relative position or his relationship with his interlocutor. No single strategy is associated with the use of a certain variety of a language—whichevervariety is used merely exhibits a speaker’s verbal repertoire which accordingly could be activated indifferent speech events, with different objectives, as well as with different illocutionary force.
