Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the university student engagement in the use of online discussions in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Context in North Bali. Moreover, it was used to analyze university student limitations and supporting factors in the use of online discussions as part of blended-learning. The university student engagement was determined by Schlecthy’s theory of student engagement level. The result showed that the university student engagement in North Bali referred to the Ritual Compliance Level. They have low attention and no commitment in learning. They tend to learn dependently and work only for the sake of compliance. Besides, six factors were limited and five factors were supported them during the learning process through online discussion. Therefore, lecturers were suggested to create a pleasant learning atmosphere by building a good relationship with students in order to make students engaged in the online discussions.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop learning media in form of video using screencast application named Active Presenter to help students learned English during COVID-19 and to increase their vocabulary skill. In developing the learning media, Design and Development (D&D) method proposed by Richey and Klein (2007) was applied in this research. There were three instruments used to collect the data, they were interview guide, questionnaire, and expert judgment. The subject of this research was students from SMK Negeri 1 Bangli in Bangli regency North Bali. The result showed that the learning media was highly relevant to the eleven criteria of a good learning media in form of video and was also categorized as a good media. Thus, the learning media in form of video was an essential media to be used to help students learned during COVID-19 as well as to increase vocabulary skill.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to develop learning media in the form of video by using screencast application named Monosnap to assist students learned English during COVID-19 outbreak while increasing their vocabulary skill. In the process of developing the learning media, the researcher applied Design and Development (D&D) method proposed by Richey and Klein (2007). Interview guide, questionnaire, and expert judgment were instruments used to collect the data in this research. The subject of this research was students of SMK Negeri 1 Sukasada in Buleleng regency, North Bali. The result indicated that the learning media made by Monosnap was relevant to the eleven criteria of a good learning media in the form of video. Not only that, but it was also categorized as a good media. The learning media in the form of video was a necessary media to be used to assist students learned during COVID-19 outbreak while increasing students’ vocabulary skill.

Abstract

The Covid 19 pandemic makes learning should be done via online (distance learning) which has different characteristics than before. The basic difference is on the existence of interaction during teaching and learning process. This research aims at investigating the students’ reading proficiency profile and classical learning mastery of eighth graders in MTS N 3 Jembrana after online learning is implemented. This research researh was categorized into descriptive quantitative. This research used survey sampling technique so 73 respondents were selected. The data of reading proficiency were collected by using test in the form of multiple choice. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by calculating the general and dimension mean of reading proficiency. This research discovers that 1) students’ reading competency is categorized into avarage, but specifically, finding main idea is categorized into average, finding textual reference is categorized into low, finding implixit information is categorized into low, finding explicit information is categorized very high, and finding sinonym and antonym is categorized in to very high and 2) the reading classical mastery is 41,01%. It implies that teaching reading online should be done based on communicative teaching reading principles

Abstract

Researchers made observations during the writing class. There were several writing problems faced by students, including: spelling errors in writing a few words, difficulty in compiling ideas, grammatical errors, incorrect punctuation, and inaccurate diction used. The researcher then found a solution to that problem by using the track changes feature in the pair correction activity. Track changes was useful for correcting students' writing in the editing phase not only making corrections, students also worked together in groups in pairs to produce better writing. The study used a classroom action research that aimed to describe the implementation of the use of track changes in pair correction activities and to find out whether the strategy could improve students' writing skills. The subjects of this study were students in class XI IPA 1 with a total of 32 students. The procedures in this study included planning, action, observation, and reflection. Researchers collected data through pre-test, post-test, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher used two cycles in this research. The results of the pre-test action showed that the average grade of the class was 67, after implementing the strategy, the average class in the first post test was 79 and in the second post-test it was 81. Based on these results, the use of track changes in writing correction in pairs could improve students' writing skills. The data were also supported by the results of questionnaires and interviews obtained that track changes helped students in learning to write.

Abstract

This research aims to develop audio-visual media in the form of videos as learning media using the Kinemaster video editor application to assist students in learning and improving English vocabulary skills during online learning. This study uses Design and Development (D&D) method proposed by Richey and Klein (2007). The students of SMA Negeri 1 Ubud in Gianyar Regency are the subjects of this research. The data collected in this study used four instruments: an interview guide for a teacher, questionnaires for students, document checklist for tenth-grade senior high school syllabus and expert judgment. The score given by the first expert judges was 72, the second expert judges was 85, and the third expert judges was 80. The expert judgment results analyzed using Nurkancana & Sunartana (1992) formula. The developed learning media categorized as good learning media. Thus, the learning media developed using Kinemaster could assist students in learning and improving English vocabulary skills during learning online.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the English for Food and beverage service materials needed by students of SMK SMSR Ubud, describing how the materials were developed, and analysing the quality of the developed materials. This study used research and development model suggested by (Richey and Klein, 2007) comprising design, development and evaluation. The instruments used were questionnaires, interview guides, document analysis, and checklist. The findings of this study show that there were 7 topics needed to be developed included Preparing restaurant area, preparing and set up table, greet the guest, taking order, serving food, closing restaurant area, and non-alcoholic beverage. The materials were designed by following the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) material design suggested by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) involving input, content focus, language focus and task. Since English for food and beverage is part of ESP that is under English for Occupational Purposes, the effectiveness of the developed materials was evaluated using the criteria of good ESP materials suggested by Litz (2005), Hutchinson and Waters (2008), and Tomlinson (2009). After gaining the scores from the expert judges, the data then used the categorization of good teaching materials proposed by Nurkancana and Sunartana (2011). The quality of the developed materials was categorized as good material. Thus, it can be used as a main source for learning English Food and beverage service at SMK SMSR Ubud.

Abstract

The lack of teaching materials that can facilitate students' independent learning has an impact on students' lack of understanding. In addition, the lack of teaching materials also has an impact on student learning outcomes. The purpose of this research is to create teaching materials with Flipbook. This type of research is developed using three stages, namely design, development, and evaluation. Data was collected through interviews and document analysis. There are two instruments used in this study, namely interview guidelines and expert assessment. The subject of this research is the English teacher. The technique used to analyze the data is descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results showed that the quality of the Flipbook assessed by the first expert got a score of 56. The quality assessment given by the second jury expert was 61, with a good category. The quality rating given by the user is 62, with a good category. Thus, flipbooks are categorized as suitable teaching materials. So it can be said that the flipped book teaching materials developed are feasible to be applied in the learning process. This research implies that the Flipbook developed can be used by students in an independent study.

Abstract

The rules for studying from home have been implemented since the outbreak of the Corona Virus. This impacts the education sector in Indonesia, which makes the government make regulations to learn from home—in addition, making the teaching and learning process held in the context of distance learning. This study aims to analyze the learning process that applies MALL during the distance learning process and the challenges during education. The instruments used to obtain the data were self-rated questionnaires, observation checklists, and interview guidelines. This instrument was developed from the Prospective Teacher Ability Assessment Tool (APKCG) and the RASE learning design framework. The technique used to analyze the data is descriptive qualitative analysis. This study indicates that English teachers have implemented MALL during the distance learning process by using several online platforms as classrooms in their activities. Several challenges arise from teachers and students in this learning process, including the lack of teacher ability in utilizing technology, unsupported student devices, and unstable student connections.

Abstract

Strategi dalam berkomunikasi sangat penting terutama dalam mengajar bahasa asing demi tercapainya tujuan belajar dengan baik. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh dosen bahasa Inggris Mediterranean, jenis-jenis strategi komunikasi yang paling sering mereka gunakan dan alasan mengapa jenis-jenis strategi komunikasi tersebut diterapkan selama mereka mengajar di kelas. Penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan teori dari Tarone & Dornyei (1980) dan Scott (1997). Data dikumpulkan dari proses belajar mengajar dengan merekam proses pembelajaran di kelas. Wawancara diberikan kepada subjek untuk mengetahui alasan mengapa mereka menggunakan strategi tertentu selama mengajar. Selain itu, penyebaran kuisioner kepada subjek untuk mendukung hasil temuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dosen Bahasa Inggris Kampus Mediterranean menerapkan 29 jenis strategi komunikasi dari 34 jenis strategi komunikasi secara keseluruhan. Ada 5 strategi yang tidak digunakan selama mengajar. Ada lima strategi teratas yang digunakan oleh para dosen. Strategi pertama adalah appeal for help (15,41%), yang kedua mumbling (14,18%), yang ketiga adalah code switching (12,46%). Asking for clarification (12,27%) dan asking for confirmation (5,23%) berada pada urutan keempat dan kelima. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ketiga subjek cenderung melakukan diskusi di kelas, mengalihkan bahasa serta role play dimana siswa dapat bermain peran. Penggunaan strategi tertentu bergantung pada materi yang diberikan, kebutuhan dan keinginan siswa juga dapat menjadi pertimbangan mereka. Yang terpenting adalah dosen harus mencapai tujuan utama yaitu menghasilkan murid yang terampil, terutama dalam berbahasa Inggris karena mereka adalah mahasiswa pariwisata.Kata Kunci: Mediterranean College, Proses Belajar Mengajar, Strategi Komunikasi.
