Abstract

This study aimed to know the types of code-mixing often used and the reasons for using code-mixing by the beauty vloggers in their videos. Mix methods (qualitative-quantitative) methods are used in this study and focused on qualitative rather than the quantitative approach. This research focused on the phenomenon of code-mixing between Indonesian and English used by beauty vloggers in their videos. Moreover, the data were collected by observing the beauty vloggers' video and interviewing the selected beauty vloggers using the google form. Furthermore, the data obtained were analyzed using the theory of Hoffman (1991), Ho (2007), and Saville-Troike (1986). Based on the data analysis, the result showed that the dominant type of code-mixing used by the beauty vloggers was Intra-sentential code-mixing with a total number of 122 items (59%). Meanwhile, the principal reason underlying code-mixing by beauty vloggers is "because of the real lexical need", where 9 (36%) beauty vloggers have the same rights. However, there were two additional reasons out of Saville-Troike (1986) and Hoffman's theory (1991), namely: wanting to get more audiences and so that when promoting a product, the audience is more interested in the product. Keywords: Code-mixing, Types of Code-mixing, Reasons for using Code-mixing.

Abstract

Children tend to imitate adults such as teachers, not only in the way the teachers speak but also in the way the teachers think, behave, act, and solve problems. Politeness strategies that the teachers apply could be a way to motivate students to act and communicate politely. This study aims at analysing the positive and negative politeness strategies applied by teachers in early childhood education during the teaching and learning process, as well as analyzing the acts of teachers that threaten the students' negative faces and how the students respond to the teachers' face-threatening acts. The study involved three kindergarten teachers at an international school in Bali as the subjects. The data was collected during circle time activities. Circle time is when the teachers and children gather in a circle to discuss the day’s activities. The finding showed that the kindergarten teachers dominantly and consistently applied positive politeness strategies to motivate the students and build a close relationship between teachers and students during the teaching and learning process, which is 91.2%, compared with negative strategies, which were only 7.9%. Furthermore, there were 52 utterances of face-threatening acts done by kindergarten teachers in the dialogue interaction with their students. It is suggested that teachers consciously choose the appropriate politeness strategies, either positive or negative, to suit the context as well as the objectives of the instruction. Abstract

Kata Kunci : menulis, paragraf narasi, teknik process-oriented scaffolding This study was a classroom-based action research which aimed at improving the students’ competency of writing narrative paragraph which was found low by using process-oriented scaffolding technique at SMAN 2 Singaraja in the academic year 2013/2014. The subjects of this study were XI IPA3 students of SMAN 2 Singaraja. The study was carried out in two cycles; each cycle consisted of two sessions. Each cycle involved four steps: planning, action, observation and reflection following Hopkins (2002). The data gained were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the students’ competency of writing narrative paragraph successfully improved from 72.60 in Cycle I which was still below the success indicator to 84 in Cycle II. The percentage of the students who passed the success indicator of 75% also increased from 60% in Cycle I to 90% in Cycle II which meant the classical success indicator was successfully achieved. The achievement was assumed occurred due to the combination of Harmer’s process approach based writing and the scaffolding embedded to each stage of writing. It involved the activities of drafting (grouping technique and providing feedback), revising (individual consultation) and final version (distribution of scaffolded-instruments and the teacher’s corrective feedback). The findings of this study led to a conclusion that the students’ competency of writing narrative paragraph could be improved by using process-oriented scaffolding technique.keyword : writing, narrative paragraph, process-orientred scaffolding technique
