Abstract

This study explores students’ instrumental understanding of spatial geometry problems, accounting for differences in initial mathematical ability. Many students tend to solve geometry problems procedurally without sufficient conceptual understanding, while research that examines explicitly instrumental understanding in spatial contexts remains limited. A qualitative case study design was employed involving 25 eighth-grade students from a public junior high school in Pagar Alam City, South Sumatra. Data were collected through written tests and in-depth interviews with six students representing high, medium, and low levels of mathematical ability. The analysis was guided by four indicators of instrumental understanding: recalling concepts, identifying concepts, selecting appropriate solution strategies, and representing concepts visually and in written form. The findings indicate apparent differences across ability levels. Students with high initial mathematical ability consistently fulfilled all four indicators across various spatial geometry problems. In contrast, students with medium and low ability demonstrated partial fulfilment of the indicators, particularly in topics such as cylinder volume and triangular prisms. These results suggest that students’ initial mathematical ability plays a crucial role in the development of instrumental understanding. Therefore, differentiated instructional strategies aligned with students' ability levels are recommended to support balanced procedural and conceptual learning in spatial geometry.

Abstract

The students formation of mathematical concepts was still relatively weak. Data from the PISA showed that procedural skills still dominate students' conceptual understanding. The purpose of this study was to describe the students' concept formation in solving trigonometric problems. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were three tenth-grade students from one of the high schools in the Boyolali district, Central Java. The instruments included trigonometric tests and in-depth interviews. Then the data was analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that students with high trigonometric ability can fulfill all indicators of concept formation and connect trigonometric concepts with others. Furthermore, the student with medium trigonometric ability, although he can fulfill all the indicators of concept formation, has errors in the calculation process and unable to connect trigonometric concepts with other mathematical concepts. A student with low trigonometric ability is only able to perform simple solutions, and difficulties in connecting trigonometric concepts with others and explaining the steps of the solution. The implications of this study are the importance of pedagogical intervention in strengthening students' conceptual understanding and providing concrete experiences in trigonometry, especially for students with medium and low abilities.

Abstract

Relational reasoning plays an important role in helping students to understand mathematical concepts. The student's ability to distinguish patterns or objects is one of the understandings of mathematical concept indicators. The anomaly dimension is part of the relational reasoning that students need to be able to determine a pattern or object in mathematics. This study aims to reveal the student's relational reasoning ability of anomaly dimension in solving number pattern problems in terms of gender differences. The subjects of this study are 52 grade-8 students in one of Muhammadiyah Junior High Schools in Kartasura. We used two similar problems on number patterns to disclose the student's ability to identify the pattern deviation in solving problems. The two selected students had relatively similar in their mathematical abilities. The finding showed that female subject met the three anomaly dimension indicators: identification, interpretation, and adaptation. Conversely, male student cannot fulfill the anomaly indicators. He cannot recognize pattern deviation in the formed mathematical model. He also failed to identify a pattern different from the two problems. Although the subjects interviewed were limited, the finding provided the insightful into the differences in anomaly reasoning abilities in male and female students

Abstract

This study aims to map trends in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education learning, examine its effectiveness, and identify key implementation challenges. A qualitative approach was employed using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Literature was collected from academic databases and platforms, including Google Scholar, Sinta, and DOAJ, covering publications from 2020 to 2025. Relevant national and international journal articles were selected using keywords related to AI, higher education, learning, effectiveness, and challenges. The selected studies were systematically analyzed through an SLR table and synthesized as primary data for the results and discussion. The findings reveal a significant increase in AI adoption, particularly generative AI, in higher education learning. AI is commonly used as a learning assistant, discussion facilitator, and support tool for assessment and academic administration. Its effectiveness is reflected in enhanced student engagement, learning autonomy, and institutional efficiency. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including ethical issues, limited AI literacy, infrastructure constraints, and the lack of adaptive regulatory frameworks. These results indicate that AI integration can improve educational quality when supported by clear policies and ethical governance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of teacher and peer support on the school well-being of elementary students. Using a quantitative approach with an ex post facto correlational design, the research involved 155 students from MI M Tahfidzul Qur’an Matesih, Karanganyar. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire measuring three variables: teacher support, peer support, and school well-being. The instruments were valid (r > 0.30) and reliable (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.887). Multiple regression analysis revealed that both teacher support (β = 0.312, p < 0.01) and peer support (β = 0.286, p < 0.01) significantly predicted school well-being. The model explained 32.3% of the variance in school well-being (R² = 0.323). These findings indicate that emotional and social support from teachers, along with positive peer interactions, play a vital role in fostering students’ happiness, sense of belonging, and engagement in school activities. Strengthening these social supports can create a more inclusive and nurturing school environment.

Abstract

Digital transformation in elementary education necessitates innovative pedagogical approaches that align with digital-native learners' characteristics, yet traditional instructional models persist despite demonstrating limited effectiveness in fostering student motivation and engagement. This study examined gamification implementation in elementary learning contexts to: (1) analyze implementation patterns, (2) evaluate effectiveness in improving learning outcomes, and (3) formulate adaptive sustainability strategies. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected from Muhammadiyah Plus Elementary School, Semarang, through semi-structured interviews with eleven participants (principal, six teachers, four students), systematic classroom observations across twelve sessions, and comprehensive document analysis. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model with triangulation validation. Gamification integration significantly enhanced student engagement (87% active participation versus 52% in non-gamified contexts) and academic achievement, with particularly pronounced gains among lower-achieving students (+13.2%). Analysis revealed that point systems, badges, challenges, and immediate feedback satisfied psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness as theorized in Self-Determination Theory. Unexpectedly, competitive leaderboards fostered collaborative peer tutoring rather than individualistic behaviors. Sustainability mechanisms included ongoing professional development, adaptive implementation flexibility, Learning Management System integration, and continuous evaluation. Gamification constitutes an effective elementary education innovation when embedded within supportive institutional ecosystems, addressing pedagogical dissonance between traditional methods and digital-native learner characteristics while requiring comprehensive teacher preparation and context-responsive adaptation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of learning technology at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Muhammadiyah Karangwaru Plupuh Sragen, identify enabling and constraining factors, and interpret its impact on student engagement. A qualitative case study with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three key informants—Umi Khasanah (principal), Zuli Nurdayati (class teacher), and Sitisamlatun (class teacher)—supported by classroom observations and document review (lesson plans, digital media artifacts, and assessment evidence). Data analysis followed thematic coding, data reduction and display, and conclusion drawing with source and technique triangulation to enhance trustworthiness. The main findings indicate that technology was integrated in three domains: planning (using digital resources to design learning materials), implementation (audiovisual media, interactive quizzes, and learning communication through messaging applications), and assessment (simple platform-based formative tests and digital portfolio documentation). Most practices remain at substitution–augmentation levels, yet initial movement toward modification is evident when teachers redesign learning flows into collaborative and project-based micro-tasks. Enablers include the principal’s instructional leadership, peer-sharing culture, and parent partnership; major barriers involve limited devices, unstable internet connectivity, and varied teacher digital literacy.
