Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of using PhET (Physics Education Technology) simulations in enhancing critical thinking skills and learning outcomes of students on the topic of electricity at the junior high school level. Employing a quantitative approach and experimental design, the study involved 60 ninth-grade students from SMP Asy-Syifa Sukoharjo Boarding School, divided into control and experimental groups. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires to measure critical thinking skills and students' learning outcomes. The data analysis revealed that the use of PhET simulations significantly improved critical thinking skills (p=0.008) and learning outcomes (p<0.001). Students in the experimental group demonstrated a higher average improvement in learning outcomes compared to the control group, with consistently enhanced conceptual understanding of electricity. These findings suggest that PhET simulations are an effective interactive learning tool for fostering conceptual comprehension and developing critical thinking skills. Integrating PhET as a digital learning medium can serve as an innovation to improve the quality of science education in the technological era.

Abstract

Reflective thinking plays a vital role in mathematics learning, particularly in solving complex problems. Understanding students’ reflective thinking abilities across its aspects—technique, monitoring, insight, and conceptualization—is essential for selecting appropriate instructional methods. This study aims to describe junior high school students’ reflective thinking abilities in learning statistics based on their initial mathematical ability. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used to explore reflective thinking skills in the four aspects: technique, monitoring, insight, and conceptualization. The research participants consisted of 30 seventh-grade students from a junior high school in Boyolali, Indonesia, who were grouped into three categories based on their mathematical ability: high, medium, and low. Data were collected through reflective thinking tests, observations, and interviews, and analyzed using the constant comparative analysis method. The results reveal a hierarchical relationship between mathematical ability and reflective thinking. Students with high mathematical ability demonstrated complete reflective thinking, fulfilling all indicators across the four aspects. Students with moderate ability exhibited partial reflective thinking, meeting some indicators but not fully optimizing others. Students with low mathematical ability showed the weakest reflective thinking skills, meeting indicators only partially in technique, monitoring, and insight, while failing to achieve the conceptualization indicators optimally. These findings confirm that foundational mathematical knowledge is a critical determinant of students’ capacity for deep reflective problem solving in statistics and provide important implications for the development of targeted instructional methods.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis implementasi manajemen sumber daya manusia (MSDM) berbasis kompetensi dalam meningkatkan profesionalisme guru di SMP Negeri 1 Manisrenggo. Profesionalisme guru menjadi salah satu faktor penting dalam meningkatkan mutu pendidikan, sehingga diperlukan pengelolaan sumber daya manusia yang efektif, terarah, dan berbasis kompetensi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus untuk memperoleh pemahaman mendalam mengenai pelaksanaan MSDM berbasis kompetensi di lingkungan sekolah. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi dengan melibatkan kepala sekolah, guru, dan tenaga kependidikan sebagai informan penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa implementasi MSDM berbasis kompetensi dilakukan melalui beberapa tahapan, yaitu perencanaan kebutuhan guru, rekrutmen dan seleksi berbasis kompetensi, pelatihan dan pengembangan profesional, serta evaluasi kinerja yang disesuaikan dengan standar kompetensi guru. Penerapan strategi tersebut memberikan dampak positif terhadap peningkatan profesionalisme guru, yang terlihat dari meningkatnya kompetensi pedagogik, profesional, sosial, dan kepribadian guru dalam proses pembelajaran maupun interaksi di lingkungan sekolah. Selain itu, guru menjadi lebih adaptif terhadap perubahan kurikulum dan perkembangan teknologi pendidikan. Namun demikian, implementasi MSDM berbasis kompetensi masih menghadapi beberapa kendala, seperti keterbatasan waktu pelatihan, minimnya sarana pendukung, serta kesiapan sebagian guru dalam beradaptasi dengan perkembangan teknologi dan tuntutan pembelajaran modern. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan penguatan program pengembangan profesional berkelanjutan, peningkatan fasilitas pendukung, serta dukungan kebijakan yang memadai agar implementasi MSDM berbasis kompetensi dapat berjalan lebih optimal dan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Algebraic thinking has the important role to improve the students' understanding in solving real-world problems, especially in algebraic forms. The aim of this study is to explore the students' algebraic thinking in terms of intuitive cognitive style. This research used the qualitative approach with case study method. 61 Grade-8 students in one of public secondary schools in Ngawi District, East Java, Indonesia were participated in this study. Three intuitive subjects were selected for interviewed. This study used algebraic thinking test, questionnaires, and interview protocol for collecting the data. Researchers adopted ten questions from TIMSS 2011 8th-Grade to examine the students algebraic thinking abilities. All questions were validated by three experts in mathematics education and piloted before used. In this study, three algebraic thinking components: generalization, analytic thinking, and dynamic thinking were used to analyze the students algebraic thinking abilities.  The finding showed that the intuitive students can solve number pattern problems using picture and number patterns in generalization component. In analytic thinking component, students can solve problems related to equations using trial-error strategies and substitution methods. The students can also carry out dynamic thinking component about equivalent proportion by determining the median value and proportion concept. Thus, it can be concluded that the intuitive students are able to demonstrate the three algebraic thinking components properly
