Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Hidayati AN, Zuhud EAM, Andarwulan N. 2020. Population structure, vegetation composition and economic potentials of Parkia timoriana in Meru Betiri National Park, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 203-210. Kedawung (Parkia timoriana (DC.) Merr.) is one of rare medicinal plant species because it is only found in a small part of Indonesia. P. timoriana has high ecological and economic potential because it contains various active compounds such as anticancer. This study was aimed to investigate the population structure, vegetation community composition, and distribution, as well as the potential production and economic values of P. timoriana in rehabilitation zone in Meru Betiri National Park, East Java, Indonesia. The methods used were vegetation analysis, direct observation, and in-depth interviews with selected respondents using purposive sampling. We found that P. timoriana population at the study sites was only at tree and pole stages, while no sapling and seedling was found. This condition implies that regeneration of P. timoriana at the study sites was not happening which can threaten its sustainability in the future. P. timoriana dominated the vegetation at the studied sites which were indicated by the highest importance value index. Utilization of P. timoriana by the local community was by selling the seeds to medicinal industries or used as herbal medicine. While having conservation values, the management of P. timoriana stands in Andongrejo Resort also had the potential to generate economic values up to 17.6 billion rupiahs. Considering the great economic potential of P. timoriana and to ensure sustainability, so that nursery, breeding and regeneration of P. timoriana should be made in order to obtain the best quality seeds.

Abstract

Abstract. Saleh I, Aziz SA, Melati M, Andarwulan N. 2023. Morpho-physiology and metabolite content of yellow and orange Cosmos sulphureus Cav. and Cosmos caudatus Kunth. Biodiversitas 24: 5739-5746. Cosmos sp., known as kenikir in Indonesia, is an underutilized vegetable commodity. Cosmos sulphureus Cav.  (C. sulphureus), with orange and yellow flowers, is commonly found as an ornamental plant. C. sulphureus can also be used as vegetable crops, although the Cosmos species widely used as a vegetable is Cosmos caudatus Kunth. (C. caudatus). This study investigated the growth, shoot production, primary and secondary metabolite content, and antioxidant activity of yellow and orange C. sulphureus and C. caudatus. This experiment was arranged using a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with one factor: Cosmos species (yellow and orange C. sulphureus and C. caudatus) with six replications. The result showed that plant height, leaf number, and branch number were not significantly different among the three Cosmos studied; however, the shoot weight per plant of orange C. sulphureus was significantly higher than the others. The antioxidant activity and phenol content of C. sulphureus were lower than that of C. caudatus. Meanwhile, crude fiber, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and carotenoid content were not significantly different among the three kinds of Cosmos. Orange C. sulphureus could be a functional vegetable, although its antioxidant activity is lower than C. caudatus.

Abstract

Abstract. Al Manar P, Zuhud EAM, Andarwulan N, Fauzi AM, Bintoro MH, Hikmat A, Hermanida S. 2026. Local wisdom of the Lingga Malay Community in harvesting and transporting sago in Lingga District, Riau Islands, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 27 (4): d270415. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270415. Sago (Metroxylon sagu) plays an important role in the food system, culture, and ecological resilience of coastal communities in Indonesia, including the Lingga Malay Community in the Riau Islands, Indonesia. However, systematic documentation of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) related to sago harvesting and transportation in this region remains limited. This study aimed to analyze local wisdom practices associated with sago harvesting and transportation among the Lingga Malay Community. A qualitative approach was applied through in-depth interviews with 100 informants across ten villages, participatory observation, and a literature review. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis supported by coding and triangulation techniques. The results reveal that the community possesses a well-developed TEK system for identifying harvestable sago palms based on morphological indicators and ecological conditions. Harvesting practices combine traditional techniques with selective semi-mechanized tools adapted to local environmental constraints. In addition, transportation systems are primarily water-based, using rakit and small motorized boats (pompong), reflecting adaptive strategies to the archipelagic and riverine landscape of Lingga. The utilization of sago residues further demonstrates resource-efficient practices embedded in local socio-ecological systems. These findings highlight the role of traditional knowledge in supporting adaptive resource management and sustaining local livelihoods in island ecosystems.

Abstract

Temperature is an important parameter in the yogurt fermentation process. MSME-scale yogurt fermenters currently available do not yet have an accurate temperature-control system. This study aims to develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based yogurt fermenter prototype with a temperature-control system using the PID method. PID parameter determination was carried out using the modified Ziegler-Nichols and Chien-Hrones-Reswick tuning methods. The evaluation results showed that the PID parameters obtained from the Ziegler-Nichols method provided better temperature control performance than those from the CHR method, with lower rise time, settling time, and overshoot. The 8-hour fermentation test showed that the average fermenter temperature approached the target of 45°C, with minimal deviation. Increasing the fermentation temperature and adding rice flour increased the rate of pH decrease. This study shows that a PID-based control system can significantly improve the performance of MSME-scale yogurt fermenters, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the MSME-scale yogurt industry. This system implies that, in addition to being used as a yogurt fermenter, it can also serve other functions because it is essentially a water bath.

Abstract

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a commonly used indicator to assess nutritional status, which can be influenced by nutrient intake from food consumption. This study aims to analyze the relationship between energy and macronutrient intake and BMI. A cross-sectional design was applied using data from the 2019 Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factor Cohort Study (FRPTM), involving 1,018 subjects selected purposively from a total of 1,218 respondents. The data analyzed included sociodemographic characteristics, BMI, and 1x24-hour dietary recall. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test for variables showing significant differences. The results indicated significant associations between BMI and gender, energy intake (low vs. high), fat intake (adequate vs. high), and carbohydrate intake (low vs. adequate and low vs. high). These differences may be influenced by variations in metabolism and intake levels. In conclusion, BMI is affected not only by energy and macronutrient intake but also by other contributing factors.
