Abstract

This study specifically investigates the impact of an ethnoscience-based Common Knowledge Construction Model (CKCM) learning approach integrated with podcast media on student learning outcomes and collaboration skills, concentrating on chemical bonding. The quasi-experiment research method was conducted in one of the private schools in Sukoharjo Central Java, involving 24 students in control and experimental classes. This research responds to skill demands in the 21st century to develop quality human resources by introducing innovations that integrate culture and technology into a learning system, focusing on enhancing students' soft skills, especially in collaboration. The results of the data analysis show that the learning model significantly influences student learning outcomes. However, the study indicates that this approach results in a slight improvement in students' collaboration abilities. Yet, further exploration and refinement may be necessary to enhance its effectiveness in fostering collaboration skills. This research contributes valuable insights for educators seeking innovative approaches to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the contemporary education and employment landscape, such as competence, superiority, and competitiveness. Thus, the CKCM learning model has great potential to continue to be developed as a learning model that can answer the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

Culture has an important role in realizing sustainable education. An Ethnochemistry-based Culturally Responsive Teaching Approach has the potential to integrate students' cultural and chemical concepts into classroom learning. However, this approach has not been widely implemented in schools. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effect of implementing an tthnochemistry-based culturally responsive teaching approach on improving cognitive learning outcomes in green chemistry material in high school. A quasi-experimental design involving 36 students in the experimental class and 36 students in the control class was used, utilizing a post-test with ten multiple choice questions to measure cognitive learning outcomes. The Kruskal-Wallis test was then applied to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. The research results show that the application of the Culturally Responsive Teaching approach which is integrated with ethnochemistry has an effect on increasing cognitive learning outcomes in green chemistry material.

Abstract

This study was conducted to describe aspects of the Nature of Science (NoS), its presentation, and its scores from chemistry textbooks used in Surakarta on acid-base equilibrium topics. This research was qualitative research with a content analysis method. Three high school chemistry textbooks for class XI from different publishers were analyzed by two raters based on ten aspects of the NoS. Interrater reliability was calculated using the cohen Kappa. The results showed that a scientific law is the only aspect that is not included in the three textbooks A, B, and C. Other aspects of NoS contained in textbooks A and B are slightly different from textbook C. Textbooks A and B contain the same aspects: empirical, inferential, creative, theory-driven, tentative, scientific methods, scientific theories, social science, and the application of science in socio-cultural, while textbook C does not contain tentative and theory-driven aspects. The implicit-correct category dominates the presentation of the NoS aspects in the textbooks. Presentations with implicit-incorrect and explicit-incorrect categories were not found in this study. The scores obtained by textbooks A, B, and C based on the presentation of aspects of NoS are 9, 11, and 8, respectively, of the maximum total score that can be obtained of 30. It did not show the presence of the NoS aspects explicitly, correctly, consistently, and completely, so textbooks containing NoS explicitly are required. Teachers also need to guide students in interpreting NoS in learning.

Abstract

Recently, research on the chemistry of natural products as medicinal has been increasingly developed; this is because natural products have many chemical components, have the potential biological activities without side effects, and are easy to obtain. One of these natural products is Lempuyang Emprit (Zingiber amaricans BL.) essential oil. The researchers guided UKM Suti Sehati to develop a new product: a hand sanitizer containing Lempuyang Emprit essential oil (LEEO). This study aims to make ten hand sanitizer formulas by varying LEEO concentrations and determine the best formula based on the physical properties and antibacterial activities. The best formulation obtained was then optimized with variations in fragrance concentration. The best product was selected by a hedonic test using 30 untrained panelists based on the parameters of color, scent, texture, pH, homogeneity, speed of drying, causing no red skin, causing no pain, and causing no dry skin. The antibacterial activity tests were performed against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 using the disk method. The LEEO isolation was carried out using steam and water distillation methods, and the chemical components of the best product was identified using the GC-MS method. Based on the hedonic test, the best hand sanitizer product contains 1.5% LEEO and 3% fragrance. This product has a strong antibacterial activity value against S. aureus ATCC 25923, with an inhibition zone of 15.95 mm, and a moderate value against E. coli ATCC 25922, with an inhibition zone of 9.42 mm. The hand sanitizer product contains 21.35% of Zerumbone and exhibits antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop pH-sensitive strips made of cellulose incorporated with anthocyanins extracted from dried Java plum fruits (Syzygium cumini) which potentially can be used to monitor food freshness. The spoilage of animal protein typically produces total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), which can be easily detected using pH-sensitive indicators. pH-sensitive indicators can be developed by combining biopolymers and anthocyanins. Biopolymers were cellulose from Whatman filter paper. While anthocyanins in this study were extracted from dried Java plum fruits (Syzygium cumini) with acidified water (0.01% v/v HCl) followed by SPE. Anthocyanins were incorporated into Whatman filter paper and dried at 70 °C for 10 min. Cellulose incorporated with anthocyanins was analysed using FT-IR and tested for pH 7-10. LC-MS spectra showed cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (m/z 449.3), delphinidin-3-O-glucoside (m/z 465.3), and petunidin-3-O-glucoside (m/z 479.3). These anthocyanins were the products of the deglycosylation of anthocyanin diglycosides. The deglycosylation of anthocyanins takes place through two different routes in either hemiketal or quinonoid forms. Those proposed two pathways are through protonation on an oxygen atom connecting an aglycone and a sugar moiety or through protonation on an oxygen atom within a sugar ring moiety. UV-Vis studies showed the colour profiles of anthocyanins in buffer solutions pH 1-12. The λvis-max of flavylium at pH < 3 ranged from 515-524 nm. At pH 4 to 6, colourless hemiketal was observed. The λvis-max of the quinonoid base was 575 nm at pH 7 and 590-599 nm for quinonoid anion at pH > 8. In alkaline pH, chalcone was observed.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of C-4-methoxyphenyl-calix[4]resorcinarene in impeding the development of CaCO3 crust at varying concentrations of the inhibitor and different durations of contact. The research employed a seeded experimental approach using a 0.1 M CaCO3 growth solution maintained at 80 °C. The concentrations of C-4-methoxyphenyl-calix[4]resorcinarene introduced into the CaCO3 growth solution were 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 ppm. The experimental procedure commenced with preparing crystal seeds, which is pivotal for gauging crystal growth rates. Results obtained from crystal weighing and morphological analysis through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) indicated that C-4-methoxyphenyl-calix[4]resorcinarene effectively impeded the pace of CaCO3 scaling. The inhibitory efficacy of C-4-methoxyphenyl-calix[4]resorcinarene as a CaCO3 scaling inhibitor was contingent on well-regulated temperature during the heating phase. The inhibition effectiveness was positively correlated with the inhibitor's concentration; higher concentrations yielded superior suppression of CaCO3 scaling. Optimal scale reduction was observed at an inhibitor concentration of 10 ppm during a 20-minute contact period. These findings underscore the promising potential of C-4-methoxyphenyl-calix[4]resorcinarene as a viable inhibitor for mitigating scaling growth rates in various industrial fluid systems and related contexts.

Abstract

Traditional Chemistry Laboratories, such as acid-base reactions, are hard to demonstrate for present-day students in their lab classes when they need to have the knowledge exchange we had, graduating (and teaching) with mortar boards lined up and ready for weddings. The Evaluation Of The Digital Platform “pH Master” For Enhancing Chemistry Student Performance Through A Virtual Imitation of Traditional Lab Practices The study used Akker's research and development model, including initial studies, product design, testing products, and trials. Validation was done using the Aiken formula by two expert validators and three practitioners for all items with a V value greater than 0.87. Surveys for needs analysis involved 45 students, and the learning effects were assessed with 90 students across three schools. Results Students responded favourably to the pH Master app and perceived ineffable pedagogical value. Most students agreed on the necessity of doing practical activities about what was being learned, and almost all also had trouble understanding study materials specifically related to acids and bases. The results showed a statistically higher mean n-gain value in the experimental group than in control one (0.6622 versus 0.5691) by independent t-test across three schools at p < 0,001 significance level between the two groups. This then confirms that the media created did support student learning. This study highlights the potential of the pH Master app to enhance student learning experience and active involvement in chemical education, which suggests a promising approach towards digitalising conventional practical work.

Abstract

The challenge of developing environmentally friendly synthesis methods for biologically active compounds remains a significant focus in green chemistry. This study aimed to synthesize 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone from 4-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde using a grinding technique and then characterize the synthesized compounds. The 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone was synthesized via the Claisen-Schmidt grinding method for 45 minutes at room temperature. The grinding results were extracted with chloroform. The formed crystals were tested for purity by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and further purification was carried out by recrystallization. The synthesized chalcone was characterized using FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The chalcone was also tested for antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The results showed that 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone could be successfully synthesized from 4-hydroxyacetophenone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde using the grinding technique, yielding orangish-white crystals with a 70.63% yield and a melting point of 173°C. Purity was confirmed by TLC, and structural characterization was achieved through FTIR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Antibacterial testing revealed that the synthesized chalcone produced a clear zone diameter of 9.27 mm against S. aureus and 27.88 mm against E. coli. These results indicate that the compound has relatively strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and relatively weak activity against S. aureus. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the green synthesis method and provides valuable insights into the antibacterial properties of 4'-hydroxy-4-nitro chalcone
