Abstract

Colloidal silver nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via the chemical reduction method. The synthesis used AgNO3 as the precursor, chitosan as the reducing and stabilizing agents, and NaOH as the accelerator. The synthesis parameters were optimized. The samples were tested with a UV-vis spectrophotometer to observe their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon, a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and a particle size analyzer (PSA) to investigate their particle shape and size distribution. Further, silver nanoparticles were tested for their storage stability and antibacterial performance. The UV-vis spectroscopy data exhibited that the silver nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized, validating via the emergence of the LSPR absorption band at 402–418 nm. At 50 °C, the optimum synthesis was achieved for 100 min of reaction time by adding 0.033 M NaOH and AgNO3 4.00% (w/w, AgNO3/chitosan). TEM results showed spherical silver nanoparticles of 1–8 nm, while the PSA results exhibited particles sizes of about 12–59 nm. The colloidal silver nanoparticles were stable in storage for 8 weeks and had good antibacterial performance against E. coli, S. aureus, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Therefore, colloidal silver nanoparticles have the potential as a material for medical applications.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a vital skill for success in higher education and the workforce. However, it is often inadequately emphasized in high school curricula, resulting in students lacking proficiency. Guided discovery-based modules provide a promising approach to enhancing critical thinking by fostering independent exploration and concept discovery. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a developed module in improving thermodynamics-related critical thinking skills among 10th-grade students in Boyolali Regency, Indonesia. Five schools were randomly selected, with two classes from each forming control and experimental groups. The experimental group utilized the developed module, while the control group used traditional textbooks. Validated by experts, a test was administered to evaluate students' critical thinking skills, and statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. The developed module demonstrated superior efficacy in enhancing critical thinking skills compared to traditional textbooks. Variations in mean scores among the schools suggest the need for further investigation across diverse educational contexts. The study's outcomes have implications for teaching and learning in Indonesia and other countries where critical thinking is insufficiently emphasized in high school curricula. Ethical considerations were upheld, ensuring participant rights and confidentiality. Future research can explore the module's effectiveness in improving critical thinking across different subjects and educational settings

Abstract

Anthocyanins are highly coloured polyphenols, a class of flavonoids, which are natural, non-toxic, and water-soluble compounds. Because of that, anthocyanins have been used in numerous applications, such as natural colorants for foods, beverages, and textiles. However, anthocyanins have some drawbacks regarding their stability towards temperature, pH, and light, leading to degradation. One method to improve anthocyanins’ stability can be achieved through a complexation reaction of anthocyanins with metal cations. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the stability and colour profiles of anthocyanins extracted from Java Plum fruits (Syzygium cumini) complexed with Al3+, Fe3+, and Ca2+ ions in pH 1-12. Previously, anthocyanins from Java Plum fruits have been identified by LC-MS as cyanidin-3-O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 449.3), delphinidin-3-O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 465.3), and petunidin O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 479.3). The ATR FTIR was also performed to confirm the functional group of anthocyanins. The colour of each solution at different pH was evaluated by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at 200-800 nm. Complexation of anthocyanins with Al3+, Fe3+, and Ca2+ ions showed various colours at different pHs. The complexation of anthocyanins with Al3+ at pH 4-5 developed a blue colour. The intensity of the blue colour increases with an increase in Al3+ ion concentration. This investigation showed the potential application of anthocyanin-metal chelation for the textile industry due to the range of colour produced. Furthermore, the complexation of anthocyanins to produce blue colour can be an alternative in food industries as this colour is difficult to obtain in acidic pH.
