Abstract

Decreased physical and psychological abilities in the elderly often lead to a decreased level of independence in performing daily activities. Group activity therapy (GAT) is a nursing intervention aimed at improving the social, psychological, and independence abilities of the elderly through collaborative activities. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of group activity therapy in increasing the independence of the elderly. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, one-group design. The population in this study was all elderly people in nursing homes, with a sample of 30 people selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was an independence observation sheet based on the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant difference between the level of independence before and after group activity therapy (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Conclusion: Group activity therapy is effective in increasing the independence of the elderly. This intervention is recommended as a routine activity program in nursing homes and community settings.

Abstract

Sleep quality is a crucial component of health and overall well-being among older adults, as the aging process is commonly associated with various physiological, psychological, and environmental changes that may significantly disrupt normal sleep patterns. Declining bodily functions, increased health problems, and changes in daily routines often contribute to sleep disturbances in later life. This literature review aims to analyze the factors influencing sleep quality in the elderly by synthesizing findings from relevant national and international studies published in recent years. Various factors were identified, including physiological conditions such as chronic diseases, pain, and hormonal changes; psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, stress, and cognitive decline; lifestyle-related factors such as levels of physical activity, dietary habits, medication use, and caffeine consumption; and environmental aspects including noise exposure, lighting conditions, temperature, and overall bedroom comfort. The reviewed literature consistently indicates that poor sleep quality is strongly associated with impaired physical health, reduced cognitive function, increased fatigue, and decreased emotional well-being in older adults. This review highlights the importance of comprehensive, multidisciplinary interventions that address both intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of sleep to effectively improve overall sleep quality among elderly populations.

Abstract

Background: Medication adherence remains a major challenge in tuberculosis (TB) management, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where socioeconomic and health system barriers affect treatment continuity. Although educational and psychosocial interventions have shown benefits, the application of structured nursing theories in TB care is still limited. This study aimed to examine the effect of Henderson-based nursing care on medication adherence among TB patients Methods: This quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design followed the TREND reporting guideline. A purposive sampling procedure was conducted by screening outpatient TB registries and applying predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 60 eligible participants (intervention n = 30; control n = 30). The independent variable was nursing care based on Henderson’s fourteen fundamental needs, while the dependent variable was medication adherence. Adherence was measured using a validated Medication Adherence Scale (Cronbach’s α = 0.87). Before parametric testing, assumptions of normality and homogeneity of variance were examined. Paired and independent t-tests were performed, and ANCOVA was used to control for age, education level, and treatment duration. Effect size (Cohen’s d) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Results: Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups (p > 0.05). In the intervention group, mean adherence scores increased from 68.7 ± 8.9 to 88.3 ± 6.4 (mean difference = 19.6; 95% CI: 16.1–23.1; p < 0.001), representing a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.52). The control group showed no significant improvement (mean difference = 2.4; p = 0.27). The adjusted mean difference between groups at posttest was 16.8 points (p < 0.001). Additionally, the proportion of patients classified as having high adherence increased substantially in the intervention group compared to the control group. ANCOVA confirmed a significant intervention effect (F = 64.82; p < 0.001), independent of demographic covariates. Conclusion: Henderson’s Need Theory–based nursing care significantly improves medication adherence among TB patients and demonstrates a large clinical effect. Integrating structured, theory-driven nursing interventions into routine TB services may strengthen adherence-focused care, enhance patient independence, and contribute to improved treatment completion rates in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

The context of this research is the Role of the School Committee in Improving the Quality of Education at SDN Sidamulya 02, Wanasari District, Brebes Regency. The school committee has a role as an advisory, supporting, and controlling body. The School Committee of SDN Sidamulya 02 plays an active role as an advisor, supporter and controller in improving the quality of education at SDN Sidamulya 02, Wanasari District, Brebes Regency. This study aims to describe the role of the school committee in improving the quality of education at SDN Sidamulya 02.The method used in this study is a qualitative method, with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques in this study through interviews, observations and documentation. Interviews were conducted with the principal, head of the school committee, teachers and parents. Data analysis used through three steps, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the role of the school committee at SD Negeri Sidamulya 02 in improving the quality of education includes sub-focus 1) the role of the committee as a provider of consideration in improving the quality of education has provided consideration in the preparation of the school's vision, mission and goals, preparation of RKS, creation of mini class programs, consideration in school management and development such as extracurricular, class competitions, parent associations, and others. 2) The role of the school committee as a supporter in improving the quality of education that the SD Negeri Sidamulya 02 committee in its role has provided support to the school both financially, manpower, ideas, thoughts and the need to fulfill other school facilities and infrastructure. The school committee also actively participates in class development activities, participation in mentoring competition activities, and provision of other class cleaning facilities. 3) The role of the school committee as a controller in improving the quality of education that the SD Negeri Sidamulya 02 committee has not carried out direct control of the implementation of learning in the classroom and assessed the performance of individual schools such as the principal and teachers, but the committee only carries out supervision and evaluation through communication and discussion activities with the school community. The suggestion of this research is that the committee is expected to be able to improve the shortcomings of the committee, especially in its role as a controller, namely the committee can carry out direct control in the implementation of learning in the classroom even though it is only limited to the interests of controlling the eligibility of teachers in implementing learning in the classroom.

Abstract

Background: Spousal loss represents a significant life transition in later life, often influencing psychological well-being, social functioning, and personal identity. In rural Indonesian communities, bereavement is embedded within sociocultural contexts where spiritual beliefs, family obligations, and communal caregiving traditions shape how older adults experience and respond to loss. Despite growing attention to bereavement among older populations, ethnographic evidence examining culturally grounded adaptation processes in rural Indonesian settings remains limited. This study aimed to explore the cultural meanings of spousal loss and the adaptation experiences of older adults residing in rural Indonesian communities. Methods: A qualitative ethnographic design guided by Spradley’s ethnographic tradition was employed. Eighteen older adults who had experienced spousal loss were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected during six months of field engagement using in-depth interviews, participant observation, field notes, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed through thematic ethnographic analysis to identify culturally embedded patterns of meaning and adaptation. Results: Four interconnected themes emerged: spiritual acceptance of spousal loss, cultural values fostering resilience, communal caregiving practices, and loneliness after bereavement. Informants understood spousal loss not only as an emotional experience but also as a sociocultural and spiritual transition. Adaptation was facilitated through religious practices, family responsibilities, collective caregiving traditions, and community support, while loneliness and the loss of emotional companionship remained enduring challenges. Conclusion: Adaptation to spousal loss among older adults is deeply influenced by cultural values, spirituality, and community relationships. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of culturally embedded bereavement processes and provide a foundation for future cross-cultural and intervention-based research addressing grief and adaptation in later life.

Abstract

Background: Mothers of children with special needs are vulnerable to emotional challenges; however, specific emotional responses such as sadness remain underexplored in the literature. This study aimed to describe the levels of sadness among mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between July and December 2025 involving 62 mothers recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire consisting of 15 Likert-scale items measuring sadness levels. Scores ranged from 0 to 60 and were categorized into four levels. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and chi-square tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The majority of respondents reported moderate to high levels of sadness. The highest mean sadness score was observed among mothers of children with ASD (M = 49.30), followed by Down syndrome (M = 48.67), both indicating high levels. In contrast, mothers of children with intellectual disabilities reported moderate levels (M = 44.25). There was a significant difference in sadness levels across disability types (p = 0.001). Bivariate analysis showed that maternal education, occupation, family income, and type of disability were significantly associated with sadness levels (p < 0.05), whereas maternal age, child’s age, and gender were not (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Sadness is a prevalent emotional response among mothers of children with special needs, with variations across disability types and socioeconomic factors. These findings highlight the importance of targeted psychosocial support to improve maternal well-being.

Abstract

The increasing number of elderly people has an impact on the increase in specific problems that occur in the elderly, one of which is nutritional problems. An important aspect that families must have is adequate knowledge in preparing balance nutritional needs. If nutritional needs are not met in a balanced manner, health problems can occur in the elderly. Diseases or health problems among the elderly can lead them to limit their food intake, thereby worsening their condition. Restricting food due to dietary restrictions imposed by their condition will lead to a lack of nutrients the body needs. This study aims to determine families’ knowledge about healthy diets and nutritional, status in the elderly This research method used a descriptive-analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of families with elderly members aged ≥ 55 years who voluntarily participated. The sample included families who accompanied or lived with the elderly. The respondents’ ages ranged from ≥ 26 years, and a total of 57 families with elderly members aged ≥ 55 years or older voluntarily participated in this study. The analysis in this study used univariate analysis to determine the frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test. The analysis was conducted for each family knowledge category and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). Based on the distribution of family knowledge about healthy diets, 39 respondent were in the good category, 33 respondent had a normal nutritional status. Family is also an important factor in the lives of the elderly. Statistical analysis results show that there is a relationship between family knowledge about healthy diets and nutritional status fulfillment in the elderly. The results of this study indicate that there is a correlation between the level of knowledge possessed by families and the nutritional status of elderly individuals. Families with sufficient knowledge are able to provide meals that take into account the types of food, frequency of meals, and daily menus for elderly individuals in order to maintain their nutritional status within the good or normal range.
