Abstract

EFL students should consider writing motivation in a blended learning (BL) framework. Previous studies have discussed findings related to whether motivations can make students write essays better. Few studies have examined descriptive essay learning motivation in BL design. This study examined EFL students' learning motivation on descriptive essays in BL designs and their perceptions on essay writing motivation. The respondents were 32 EFL students in one reputable private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. This study was a correlational survey. The data was collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and a descriptive essay writing test with a scoring rubric developed by Oshima & Hogue (2006). The result showed that there was a positive and significant contribution of learning motivation on descriptive essay in a BL design. It also showed that learning motivation contributed 12.9% to the students’ descriptive essay writing skill. In addition, most students felt happy to practice writing in a BL design. Thus, it is inferred that EFL students could perform their essay writing quality in a BL design when they had strong learning motivation which included the intrinsic and extrinsic domains.

Additionally, 52% of students appreciated detailed feedback, and 63% reported that Grammarly helped them better understand grammar rules. In relation to the perceived use of ease, the study revealed that 55% of students found Grammarly easy to use, and 61% agreed that Grammarly provided clear feedback on errors. Qualitative data confirms these findings, highlighting Grammarly's effectiveness in correcting mistakes, enhancing grammar understanding, and increasing students writing confidence. Students also valued Grammarly as being easy to use and allowing them to simplify the writing process, save time, and make writing tasks more manageable. However, some of Grammarly's advanced features require a paid premium subscription, which may be an obstacle for some users. The study concludes that integrating technology with Grammarly in EFL writing instruction offers significant benefits, including increased confidence in writing, better understanding of Grammarly, and efficient feedback.

Abstract

The literacy movement and increasing interest in reading among students are essential educational challenges because literacy has a role in practice and social relations related to knowledge, Language, and culture. However, the problem of low literacy for Indonesian students still needs to be found. This study investigates the literacy movement in increasing the reading interest of students in elementary schools. The participants of this study are the students and the teachers at SDI PB Soedirman. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive, namely, conducting direct observations and interviews with several selected students and teachers. The study results show that library visits, watching educational films, and holding literacy competitions have increased students' interest in reading, especially in grade IV. This activity can increase students' interest in reading and train students' courage in writing stories, speaking in public, or channelling their ideas. Thus, the literacy movement at SDI PB Soedirman should continuously be supported by adequate facilities and support from teachers so that the literacy movement can be channelled appropriately to students.
