Abstract

The teacher profession education program (TPEP) within virtuality is an alternative learning program that is believed to be important for Indonesian in-service teachers nowadays and in the future as learning through digital technology is the competitiveness of the nation that needs to be continuously improved. This study aims to investigate Indonesian in-service teachers’ needs in the TPEP through online learning environments and to discover an effective design of online learning environment for TPEP in the future. The design used in this study was a mixed method with sequential explanatory design. For quantitative data, a questionnaire was distributed to the Indonesian in-service teachers attending the online TPEP over four months at a reputable private university in Indonesia, and 916 teachers completed the questionnaire. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interview with selected Indonesia in-service teachers. The results indicate that online learning provides in-service teachers’ needs, and effective design is recommended for better professional development for in-service teachers in Indonesia. In addition, the qualitative feedbacks from participants regarding online learning environments identify several challenges. These findings suggest that the proposed design of online TPEP can be significantly implemented to meet the evolving needs of educators in an increasingly digital world.

Abstract

Team-based project (TBP) has been implemented in some universities to encourage students to be creative and motivated to develop some projects. However, not all EFL teachers in higher education can effectively apply TBP in generating the projects, including English instructional tools for young learners developed by EFL pre-service teachers. This study examines the EFL pre-service teachers' perspectives on using TBP in the contexts of how English lesson plans are developed, their creativity, motivations, and learning opportunities in the primary school teacher education program (PSTEP). The participants of this study are EFL pre-service teachers of PSTEP in one of the reputable private universities in Jakarta, Indonesia, who attended an English Learning in Primary Schools course in the second semester. This study uses a mixed methods design for collecting data from the survey and data from interviews. The results showed that EFL pre-service teachers had positive perceptions of using TBP in developing English lesson plans. The results also demonstrated that EFL pre-service teachers’ creativity, motivation, and learning opportunities, qualitatively increased. Thus, this study recommends that EFL pre-service teachers continually work in groups to discuss and share their critical ideas with their teammates to produce English lesson plans as projects.

Abstract

Online professional development (PD) programs have become integral to educators' lifelong learning, offering opportunities for continuous improvement beyond traditional face-to-face training. However, research is scarce addressing the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of engagement in online programs tailored for higher education professionals. This study aims to investigate the extent to which online professional development programs contribute to Indonesian university lecturers' behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagements. This research used a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design. The participants of this study are 555 university lecturers from diverse universities in Indonesia, both private and state universities, who attended an online training for improving basic skills in instructional techniques held by Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka, Jakarta, Indonesia. The instruments used were the questionnaire distributed to all the participants and a semi-structured interview for selected participants. Data analysis included a descriptive analysis for quantitative data and a thematic analysis for qualitative data. The study results show that online PD programs can foster decisive behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagements among Indonesian university lecturers. Qualitatively, it also unveils positive motivations in pedagogical aspects. Thus, it is recommended that online training for lecturers should be the program offered to lecturers in Indonesia to improve their professionalism, mainly in the teaching aspects continually.

Abstract

To be certified as professional English teachers, Indonesian teachers must complete the teacher profession education program (TPEP) offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. Due to a lack of discussion and research on the motivation of inservice English teachers participating in the TPEP, this study explored the TPEP-related motivation of in-service English teachers. There were 80 inservice English teachers who joined the TPEP at a reputable private university in Indonesia participated in this mixed-method study. A survey questionnaire was distributed to the in-service teachers to know their motivation regarding the TPEP. The findings indicated that the majority of the in-service English teachers were highly motivated to participate in the TPEP. They also thought that TPEP was beneficial for teachers as it enhanced their knowledge and skills in teaching. Through the TPEP they learned to use innovative strategies to teach English such as project-based learning and problem-based learning. This implies that more in-service English teachers should be encouraged to join TPEP to develop their competencies.

Abstract

Learning outside the study program and campus is a learning option for students to improve the quality of graduates who can adapt to the industrial world at the national and international levels. This study aims to analyze the level of awareness and participation of students in the MBKM policy and its impact. The type of research used is a survey with descriptive analysis techniques. The subjects of this research were 11579 university students. The instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of two parts, namely the identity of the respondent and questions about the MBKM policy. The results of this study indicate that the level of student awareness of the MBKM policy is quite high, including the level of student participation. Meanwhile, the response to the impact of the MBKM policy on students was said to be high. This is based on the benefits of the MBKM program such as learning experience, recognition of 20 credits, and improvement of soft skills. Therefore, this MBKM policy has implications for increasing student participation in participating in learning activities outside the study program and campus to support Kemdikbudristek's Main Performance Indicator (IKU) 2. Thus, the findings of this study have several implications. First, the MBKM program will continue to be attended by students with great enthusiasm due to the high student awareness of the MBKM policy. Second, the quality of learning outside the campus will increase because student interest in participating in the MBKM program is quite large. Third, the sustainability of the MBKM program organized by the study program will run well. This is based on the benefits of the MBKM program which is able to provide many skills, cultural knowledge, and adaptability including leadership abilities.

Abstract

EFL Students’ needs for spoken English are considered important to fulfill, and the idea to capture what they need requires some ways and efforts so as to make them eager and keen on practicing English better. However, an analysis on needs environment is not much discussed and conducted for EFL students, mainly in lower secondary schools. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the needs of EFL students in terms of enhancing their English-speaking skills in lower secondary schools. Three ninth-grade students from three distinct lower secondary schools located in Depok, West Java, Indonesia were the subjects of the research. This study employed a qualitative design with descriptive analysis, and the instrument used to collect the data was semi-structured interviews. The resulting data was analyzed with some steps such as reduction of data, data display, and data presentation. The results demonstrated that EFL students’ English-speaking proficiency is influenced by a variety of needs, including necessities, lacks, and wants. The participants of this study are 191 students from four vocational high schools in Eastern Jakarta, Indonesia. The study employed a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative data. The data were collected through an online questionnaire, comprising closed and open-ended questions. The data were then analyzed with descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results show that students have positive responses on their mindfulness, meaningfulness, and the enjoyment in English language teaching. Qualitatively, students found English very important for their career and considered the learning materials provided by English teachers relevant.
