Abstract

This study explores university lecturers’ perceptions of a national professional development program delivered asynchronously via the Moodle platform in Indonesia. While asynchronous learning is increasingly adopted for large-scale training, limited research has examined how lecturers in developing countries perceive its usability, effectiveness, and challenges. Addressing this gap, the study aimed to investigate lecturers’ perceptions and the challenges they encountered during Moodle-based asynchronous training. Using a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, this study involved 511 Indonesian lecturers selected through total population sampling for the quantitative phase and purposive sampling for the qualitative interviews. The questionnaire as the quantitative instrument measured four sub-scales: accessibility, ease of use, effectiveness, and motivational impact of LMS. The questionnaire demonstrated strong reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.877). Descriptive statistical analysis was employed, revealing high mean scores for all aspects (M = 4.65 to 4.85), indicating positive perceptions of the training. The highest agreement was found in the ease of implementing the training via the LMS (M = 4.85, SD = 0.39). Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically, highlighting challenges such as unstable internet access, limited device functionality, and unclear material organization. These results suggest that while Moodle is perceived as an effective tool for professional development, structural and technical improvements are needed. The study recommends enhanced technical support, better content structuring, and training orientation to increase engagement and learning outcomes in similar future programs.

Abstract

Classroom presentation is an essential aspect of EFL students' speaking skills, as it involves actively conveying and expressing ideas in front of an audience. However, this activity often causes anxiety that can hinder students' performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the various factors that might contribute to the anxiety experienced by EFL students during classroom presentations, as well as identify coping strategies that can help them address their anxiety and enhance their speaking skills. In this study, mixed methods were used by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to obtain a more in-depth understanding of students' anxiety and the efforts that can be carried out to reduce its impact on speaking performance. The results showed that most students experienced medium level of learning anxiety, while their speaking ability was quite good. However, the relationship between anxiety and presentation skills in English did not show a strong enough correlation. Qualitatively, anxiety affects cognitive impairment, fluency and cohesiveness in speaking, as well as students' confidence level. In addition, the results of this study also highlighted some effective strategies that can be implemented to effectively manage anxiety, such as applying breathing techniques, practicing regularly, and speaking at a slow tempo. Therefore, students are advised to make a more thorough preparation before making an English presentation in class to increase their confidence and speaking fluency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of implementing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) as a pedagogical model in improving students' English-speaking skills. This study used a mixed methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative analysis. The research subjects were divided into two classes: an experimental class and a control class, using a purposive sampling technique. The experimental class used PjBL, while the control class used the conventional learning model. Quantitative data was obtained through pre-test and post-test of speaking ability, then analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Simultaneously, qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews to describe students' responses to the implementation of the PjBL. The results showed that PjBL model had a significant impact on students' English-speaking ability than the conventional method. Thus, it is recommended to teachers of English to implementing the PjBL model in teaching English language, especially in improving speaking skills among students.

Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) tools havebeen widely used in English teaching and learning. However, in the context of EFL teachers in vocational high schools, not all the teachers are aware of the potential of Gen-AI for English instruction. This study aims to address the gap identified in previous research by investigating Indonesian EFL teachers' perceptions and challenges of integrating Gen-AI into their classrooms. The participants of this study were 37 EFL teachers from diverse vocational high schools in Eastern Jakarta, Indonesia. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative data. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to identify the perceptions of teachers and the challenges they face when integrating Gen-AI in their teaching practices. A semi-structured interview was conducted with a subset of participants to gather qualitative data on their experiences and challenges in utilizing Gen-AI. The results of the survey reveal positive perceptionsamong EFL teachers regarding the use of Gen-AI in English classes (Mean=4.00, SD=0.53). The findings also reveal that teachers are confident and willing to adopt Gen-AI tools (Mean=3.92, SD=0.49) acknowledging their ease of use and practicality in daily teaching practices (Mean=3.92, SD=0.60) and aligning with industry-specific needs (Mean=3.95, SD=0.52).The study underscores the need for equitable access and professional development to support the effective use of Gen-AI in vocational EFL context, ultimately enabling more innovative and future-ready English instruction.

Abstract

Indonesia has high cultural diversity, but this diversity often becomes a challenge in communication between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Based on these problems, this study aims to analyze and improve students' diversity motivation by implementing the Independent Student Exchange Program (PMM) as part of universities' Independent Learning Independent Campus (MBKM) policy. This study uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The subjects in this study were 103 PMM student participants from various universities in Indonesia. Data were collected through a questionnaire with an assessment scale to measure students' level of diversity motivation. The results of the data analysis showed that the PMM program succeeded in creating a significant cross-cultural learning experience, marked by an average questionnaire score of 95%. This program encourages students to respect cultural differences, strengthen a sense of unity, and foster an inclusive attitude. The conclusion of this study shows that the Independent Student Exchange Program effectively increases diversity motivation among students. The implications of this study underline the importance of integrating diversity values in the independent curriculum to form adaptive and tolerant student characters in facing the challenges of the era of globalization and the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Abstract

EFL students should consider writing motivation in a blended learning (BL) framework. Previous studies have discussed findings related to whether motivations can make students write essays better. Few studies have examined descriptive essay learning motivation in BL design. This study examined EFL students' learning motivation on descriptive essays in BL designs and their perceptions on essay writing motivation. The respondents were 32 EFL students in one reputable private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. This study was a correlational survey. The data was collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and a descriptive essay writing test with a scoring rubric developed by Oshima & Hogue (2006). The result showed that there was a positive and significant contribution of learning motivation on descriptive essay in a BL design. It also showed that learning motivation contributed 12.9% to the students’ descriptive essay writing skill. In addition, most students felt happy to practice writing in a BL design. Thus, it is inferred that EFL students could perform their essay writing quality in a BL design when they had strong learning motivation which included the intrinsic and extrinsic domains.
