Abstract

Abstract

Background: According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health's 2016 Health Profile, 56.4% of children under five years old experience growth and development disorders. This study aims to determine the effect of Manjujai-based psychosocial stimulation education using animated video on the knowledge and attitude of mothers with children aged 6–24 months. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. A total of 60 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The study was conducted from April to May 2025. Data were analyzed up to the multivariate level using the General Linear Model (GLM). Results: The independent t-test showed a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the mean score changes of maternal knowledge and attitude between the intervention and control groups. This indicates that Manjujai-based psychosocial stimulation education through animated video has a significant effect on improving maternal knowledge and attitude. Multivariate analysis using GLM confirmed the significant effect of the intervention (p < 0.001) after controlling for confounding variables. Conclusion: Psychosocial stimulation education using animated video is proven to significantly improve maternal knowledge and attitude in providing psychosocial stimulation care for children.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes remains the most prevalent non-communicable disease (NCD) in Padang City, with the highest case burden reported at Belimbing Health Centre (74.3%, or 998 cases). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mobile-based nutrition education on diabetes knowledge and blood glucose control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 66 respondents, using a pre-test–post-test with control group design. Participants were selected through simple random sampling, and the intervention was conducted from December 2024 to July 2025. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods. Results: The intervention demonstrated statistically significant improvements in all outcome variables within the intervention group. The proportion of respondents with good diabetes knowledge increased from 0.0% to 90.9% (p < 0.001) and normal blood glucose levels rose from 27.3% to 81.8% (p < 0.001). In contrast, the control group showed no statistically significant changes across all variables (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, mobile-based nutrition education is effective in improving diabetes knowledge, promoting adherence to recommended dietary patterns, and achieving better glycemic control. This approach represents a practical and scalable educational intervention for supporting self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in primary care settings.

Abstract

Background: Wasting is a condition of acute undernutrition where a toddler's weight is not appropriate for their height, or the z-score is below -2SD. This study aims to analyze the determinants of wasting among children aged 12–59 months in the working area of Kayu Gadang Public Health Center in 2025. Methods: This research uses a mixed methods approach, which is a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative method applies a cross-sectional approach, while the qualitative method uses a case study approach. The strategy used is the Convergent Parallel Design, in which both quantitative and qualitative data are collected and analyzed simultaneously (in parallel). The sampling technique applied is proportional random sampling, with a total of 104 samples. Data analysis in this study includes multivariate analysis using the Backward LR test. Results: The results show that energy intake (p-value 0.001), protein intake (p-value 0.001), carbohydrate intake (p-value 0.003), fat intake (p-value 0.005), infectious disease (p-value 0.647), mother's knowledge (p-value 0.001), completeness of immunization (p-value 0.004), and environmental sanitation (p-value 0.001) are statistically significantly associated with wasting among children aged 12–59 months. Family income (p-value 0.647), mother's education (p-value 0.070), and exclusive breastfeeding history (p-value 0.211) are not statistically significantly associated with wasting in this age group. Multivariate analysis showed that the most dominant factor associated with wasting was protein intake. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between macronutrient intake (energy, protein, carbohydrates, fat), infectious diseases, maternal knowledge, completeness of immunization, and environmental sanitation with the incidence of wasting. The most dominant factor is protein intake.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major public health problem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It contributes substantially to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Some of the risk factors for LBW are maternal anemia and chronic energy deficiency (CED). These conditions are common during pregnancy and preventable. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the comparation between maternal anemia and chronic energy deficiency during pregnancy and the risk of low birth weight. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed and Scopus was conducted for studies published between January 2020 and July 2025. Of 1,121 records identified, 22 observational studies (case–control and cohort) met the inclusion criteria. Studies evaluating the association of maternal anemia or CED with LBW were included. Data were extracted independently by two reviewers. Meanwhile, data analysis involved multiple methods. For example, pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using meta-analytic models. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic, and publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots. This study’s protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251138329). Discussions: From 22 studies, 19 studies assessed maternal anemia (n = 16,219), and 11 studies assessed CED (n = 4,440). Maternal CED was associated with a nearly threefold increased risk of LBW (OR = 2.98; 95% CI: 2.07–4.29; I² = 82%), while maternal anemia increased the risk by 2.4 times (OR = 2.44; 95% CI: 1.73–3.43; I² = 86%). Funnel plots showed no substantial publication bias. Conclusions: Both maternal anemia and chronic energy deficiency are significantly associated with an increased risk of low birth weight, with CED demonstrating a stronger association. Strengthening antenatal nutritional interventions is essential to prevent LBW incidences.

Abstract

This educational activity aims to increase mothers' knowledge about nutritious and healthy food by optimizing interpersonal communication in Puskesmas Dadok Tunggul Hitam, Padang City. The activity design is a pre-post intervention without a control group, implemented in late August and early September 2025, targeting 15 mothers. The educational activity, supported by leaflets, includes initial activities in the form of a pre-test, individual education and counseling, discussions, and ends with a post-test. The partner for this activity is Puskesmas Dadok Tunggul Hitam, which plays a role in providing licensing support and data provision. The characteristics of mothers of toddlers are that more than 50% of mothers are aged 30-39 years, have a high school education, and are housewives. The results of the education show an increase in mothers' knowledge after being given individual counseling. The average pre-test score of mothers of toddlers was 7.4 ± 1.183 and increased to 9.4 ± 0.737 in the post-test, with a p-value of 0.0001 (p < 0.05). This indicates that nutrition education through interpersonal communication, which has not been widely used in educational activities, and assisted by leaflets, is effective in increasing mothers' knowledge about nutritious and healthy foods. This increase in knowledge is expected to be implemented in family food consumption behaviors towards a more balanced and healthy nutrition in everyday life, thereby contributing to improving the nutritional status and health of the community.
