Abstract

Learning life skills and simple skills is very important to provide provisions for mentally retarded students. The aims of this training are to provide simple skills in making three-dimensional frames for independent living. This activity is followed by 12 middle class students at SLB YP3LB Makassar. The paper uses a qualitative approach by making observations. The implementation of the training on making three-dimensional frames went smoothly and resulted in several examples of frames made by students. Training for mentally retarded students and other students with special needs requires hand-eye coordination and longer time to get neat skill results. For this reason, it is suggested to the teacher to train the coordination of fine motor movements of students so that the coordination of the eyes and hands of students is well formed.

Abstract

The objective of this community service activity is to conduct a comprehensive study aimed at enhancing the understanding of parents with children with special needs at SLB Negeri 1 Pare-Pare City, South Sulawesi. The study specifically focuses on the challenges faced by parents in comprehending the changes in their children with special needs during the transition from childhood to adolescence. The behavior and needs of children with special needs during adolescence are similar to those of children without special needs. Almost all children with special needs do not encounter issues with their body growth and development, including when they enter puberty. One of the responsibilities of parents is to provide an understanding of sex, along with guidance on how to protect themselves from sexual harassment and violence. To encourage parents of children with special needs to assist their children in understanding these issues, socialization is conducted along with simple exercises in parenting sex education for parents of children with special needs. The method used involves lectures and question-and-answer sessions on simple sex parenting exercises, with 22 parents participating. The results obtained after this activity show an increase in sexual parenting knowledge, as evidenced by the pre-test and post-test results. There was an 85.7% increase in the knowledge of the training participants, with a noticeable average improvement. This suggests that it may be recommended to expand the scope of service material with more complex exercises.

Abstract

Children with special needs in their learning require a different approach or method of learning from children in general. This tactile perception media making training aims to improve the skills of teachers in SLB YPPLB 2 Makassar in designing and making appropriate media for students with special needs, especially those with sensory limitations such as blind children and autistic children. Tactile media functions as a learning aid based on the sense of touch, enabling students to understand the concepts and shapes of flat shapes and numbers through sensory experiences. This program is implemented through three stages: preparation, implementation, and post-training assistance. The implementation stage includes an introduction to the concept of tactile perception, the practice of making media, and simulation of its use in the classroom. In addition, mentoring and evaluation are conducted to ensure sustainable implementation in the classroom. The training results showed significant improvement in teachers' skills in creating and using tactile media. Teachers also successfully integrated the media into the curriculum, creating more inclusive learning. The success of the training is supported by teachers' enthusiasm and support from the school, although there are still obstacles such as limited teacher time and technology resources. Overall, this training has a positive impact in improving the quality of learning for students with special needs in SLB YPPLB 2 Makassar. It is recommended that schools provide special time for teachers to develop media and collaborate with external parties to procure additional resources.

Abstract

Parents of children with special needs (CSN) frequently experience intense emotional turmoil following their child's diagnosis. This qualitative study examines the transformation of parents' emotional responses before and after participating in a psychoeducational seminar titled "Educating Children with Special Needs by Understanding Their World." Analysis of twenty spontaneous narratives from parents at SLB Negeri 1 Gowa revealed three predominant pre-seminar themes: feelings of despair and helplessness, uncertainty about the child's future, and profound guilt. Post-seminar, three transformative themes emerged: enhanced acceptance of the child's condition, increased self-confidence in caregiving roles, and the development of social solidarity among participants. These findings highlight the effectiveness of empathetic and participatory psychoeducational interventions in facilitating parental acceptance and building resilience for the long-term support of children with special needs. The study contributes to understanding how structured educational interventions can positively impact parental emotional adaptation to challenging caregiving circumstances.

Abstract

This study examines the social construction of stigma toward students with disabilities in the Faculty of Education at Universitas Negeri Makassar through Erving Goffman's theoretical perspective. The research aims to understand how stigma is constructed and manifested in the academic environment, particularly focusing on students' attitudes and perceptions. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 40 students from various semesters (2nd to 9th) in the Faculty of Education. The questionnaire consisted of 33 items measuring different dimensions of stigma, including character stigma, courtesy stigma, and impression management strategies. Results indicate varying levels of stigma manifestation among students, with notable patterns in academic perception, social interaction, and disclosure attitudes. The findings reveal that while students generally show positive attitudes toward inclusion, subtle forms of stigma persist in social interactions and academic expectations. This study contributes to understanding disability stigma in higher education contexts and provides insights for developing more inclusive educational environments. The research implications suggest the need for comprehensive disability awareness programs and institutional policy reforms to address stigma-related barriers in academic settings.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem characterized by a child’s height being shorter than the age-standard, primarily resulting from prolonged inadequate nutritional intake. According to the Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI) in 2022, the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia was 21.6%, with Makassar City reporting a rate of 18.4%. However, data from the Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) in 2023 indicated an increase in Makassar’s prevalence to 25.4%. Objective: This study aims to explore the cognitive understanding of housewives in Makassar City regarding pregnancy maintenance and its relation to stunting prevention. Methods: A post-positivistic paradigm was applied using a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of their perceptions and practices. Results: The findings reveal that most participants possess a basic understanding of pregnancy care and actively utilize available health services, including community health centers (puskesmas), integrated service posts (posyandu), and hospitals. Nevertheless, cultural beliefs and local traditions, such as food restrictions and ritual practices during pregnancy, continue to influence maternal behaviors. Furthermore, several participants demonstrated a limited understanding of stunting, often associating it solely with “malnutrition” or “short stature,” without fully recognizing its underlying causes or long-term developmental impacts. Conclusion: These findings underscore the need for culturally sensitive and sustainable educational interventions within maternal health services to enhance awareness and promote effective strategies for stunting prevention. Keywords: stunting; pregnancy; maternal health; local culture
