Abstract

After being explained about substitution by one of my lecturers, professor Sumarlam, I am interested in investigating the substitution on a famous novel. I choose ?Ayat Ayat Cinta? a novel written by Habiburrahman Saerozi. It is very famous in Indonesia and it is not only interesting to read but also it gives us education and the way to love someone seen from Moslem side.  There are so many some moral values given there. The novel tells us about true love, honesty, pride, and struggle. The data which I analyzed was only in the sub title ?Gadis Mesir Itu Bernama Maria?. The aim of this study is to describe the substitution used by the great writer. I am definitely sure that it will give good contribution on understanding about substitution. The ground theory which I use is from (Sudaryanto, 1993:15). He stated that there were four kinds of substitution, such as: equal quality substitution, definite readdressing substitution, nominal predicative substitution, pronominal substitution. I analyzed the data by describing the substitution used based on substitution theory. There are four findings which I can get after investigating the substitution used in the novel, namely: 1) there is no nominal predicative substitutions but the pronominal substitution is mostly used, 2) one word can substitute two words, 3) the writer differs the calling between friends and teachers to show respect, 4) aku (I) as subject sometimes are not fully written in Indonesian.

Abstract

The phenomenal discourse on People Power after Pemilu 2019 is an opinion that was initiated by a central figure in Indonesia, namely Amien Rais. This discourse invited many responses, one of which was Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Yusril gave his argument about various complicated situations and the risk of governance under the umbrella of provocation of people power. The problem of this research is how is the structure of the text and the social context that builds Yusril's opinion on the discourse of people power? This research includes descriptive qualitative research. The approach used is the critical discourse analysis model Teun A. Van Dijk. The data analysis method used is the equivalent and contextual method. Data presentation is done informally. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that: (1) the structure of the text describes semantic, syntactic, and stylistic aspects; while (2) the social context that builds the discourse of People Power is the power and access that the author has.

Abstract

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) in this research came from two texts of online news. They were Medan Business Daily from Medan, North Sumatera and Kabar Pidie Jaya from Pidie, Aceh. Both of the news had the same theme, that was legitimation zero point kilometer of Islamic entrance in Indonesian archipelago. However, both of the news was conflicated, if it had not been finished as soon as possible, it would be a long conflict. Because of that, this CDA had a purpose to try for giving solution from another point of view. The point of view was from historical data about differences of point of view on the online news. The method of this study was by using Norman Fairclough approach with text analysis (description), discourse practice (interpretation), and social practice (explanation). The result of text analysis (description) was analyzed by using rhetoric pattern; modality, such as akan, bisa; positive sentences; negative sentences; interrogative sentences; experiential and attitudinal vocabularies; life metaphor. Discourse practice analysis (interpretation) such as event series from the two online news texts. Explanative analysis followed the situational change, institution change, and social-cultural change which would be mediating this conflict based on the historical facts. Copyright (c) 2017 by KARSA. Abstract

Women work is an achievement in itself. However, there are times when working women contribute to social problems. The media participates in this practice. This study aims to (1) analyze the text to see how women are marginalized through language constructs, (2) to analyze media behavior toward career women's marginalization, and (3) to analyze how social behavior in society contributes to the marginalization of career women. This research takes the data source in Kartini magazine on career consultation rubric. This research uses the analysis of critical discourse of van Dijk. The results show that in text analysis (macro structure, superstructure, and microstructure), social cognition analysis, and social analysis together form a marginalization in career women. Abstract

The study aims to describe code variations and their functions in Islamic Forum (liqo) for women in Ciamis Regency, West Java. Source of data was utterances of murrobbi (speaker) and audiences. This research used a descriptive method. The results are as follows. First, the study found six variations of codes including Arabic, English, Sundanese, Indonesian, code-switching and code-mixing. Second, the research indicates the functions of using those codes including to introduce Arabic terms, to learn Islam through Arabic, to gain prestige, to introduce popular terms, to feel pride, to give familiarity, to show identity, to smooth communication, to maintain Sundanese bond, to unify local language, to quote other sources, to explain speech content, to reiterate the meaning of speech content, and to ease communication. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the two most frequently used codes in Islamic Forum (liqo) for women in Ciamis Regency are Arabic and Indonesian.

Abstract

This study attempts to reveal the ideology and power expressed in the news text entitled “The burning scar: Inside the destruction of Asia’s last rainforest”. The data of this study were obtained from one of the most famous online Newspapers namely BBC. Whilst, in doing the critical analysis, systemic functional linguistics specifically the use of appraisal proposed by Martin and White (2005) was applied to find out the ideology as well as the power of the text. The findings show that there are three appraisal items found such as attitude, engagement, and graduation simultaneously. Affect is the most dominant appraisal found in the text. It represents the feelings of the people who live in Papua where their land has been destroyed by the world's largest exporter of palm oil from South Korea. Besides, they also criticize the Indonesian government which sold their land to the company without any notice to the tribe who live there. Then, engagement represents the tribe’s voices where they have to move from their land. The last is graduation which represents the tribe’s experience when they were kicked out from their land. Meanwhile, the ideology of the text is represented by the use of attitude consisting of affect, appreciation, and judgment. Furthermore, the power deals with the tribe’s tenor such as contact, status dan affect.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze factors caused Agus-Sylvi’s losing in 2017 DKI Jakarta gubernatorial election. This research analyzes Agus-Sylvi’s losing not only from politic sides, but also from pragmatics’ politeness. Pragmatic politeness in this research is according to Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987) which is based on the speakers and hearers’ faces. In collecting the data, the reseacher chooses considerably free method and note taking technique. Pragmatic based approach and contextual method are used to analyze the data. From all the data, the researcher had found 83 forms of politeness strategies which showed the form of politeness strategy used by Agus-Sylvi. Those politeness strategies are positive, negative, bald-off record, and across politeness strategies. The use of the most positive politeness strategy, offer and promise, revealed the way of Agus-Sylvi got lost in 2017 governor election of DKI Jakarta. It means that it is not good to use positive politeness too much because the hearers will judge the speakers as a person who loves to boast. The lack of negative politeness and bald-off politeness also revealed that Agus-Sylvi did not respect other participants of Jakarta’s2017 governor election. The non-dominant across politeness strategy proved that Agus-Sylvi could not compete in confessing their meaning pragmatically.

Abstract

Pesan yang disampaikan dalam wacana program Mata Najwa episode 7 Oktober 2020 bertajuk “Mereka-Reka Cipta Kerja” amat menarik karena mengangkat isu terkini mengenai pro dan kontra disahkannya Undang-Undang Cipta Kerja (UU Cipta Kerja) atau Omnibus Law. Maksud, tujuan, dan pemikiran yang terekam dalam gelar wicara tersebut merepresentasikan keterwakilan pengejawantahan pemikiran dan penuangan emosi pihak pro dan kontra. Analisis dilakukan untuk mendeskripsi struktur teks dan konteks sosial. Metode penelitian menggunakan analisis wacana kritis Teun A. Van Dijk. Pengumpulan data dengan cara transkripsi percakapan dalam episode tersebut. Analisis data menggunakan model interaktif. Hasil analisis menunjukkan struktur teks berdasarkan elemen struktur makro, super struktur, dan struktur mikro berupa aspek semantik, sintaksis, stilistik, dan retoris mendasari keseluruhan wacana. Analisis terkait konteks sosial memberi gambaran keterwakilan pihak pro dan kontra dari narasumber-narasumber yang dihadirkan. Kedua pihak mempertahankan pendapat kelompok dengan apik, disertai argumen-argumen yang menguatkan, dan data-data sahih yang dihadirkan untuk memberi penjelasan tambahan. Van Dijk Abstract The Mata Najwa program episode 7 October 2020 entitled "Mereka-Reka Cipta Kerja" conveyed an interesting message by raising the latest issues regarding the pros and cons of the ratification of the Job Creation Act (UU Cipta Kerja) or the Omnibus Law. The aims, objectives, and discussions recorded in the talk show represent the representation of the thoughts and emotions of the pros and cons of the ratification of the policy. The analysis aims to describe the structure of the text and the social context of the discourse. The research method uses critical discourse analysis by Teun A. Van Dijk. Data collection by means of transcription of conversations in the episode. Data analysis using interactive model. The results of the analysis show the structure of the text based on the elements of macro structure, super structure, and micro structure in the form of semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical aspects that underlie the whole discourse. The analysis related to the social context provides an overview of the representation of the pros and cons of the speakers presented in the talk show. Both parties defended the group's opinion well, accompanied by supporting arguments, and valid data were presented to provide additional explanations. Abstract

Students sometimes struggle with writing argumentative essay. To address this obstacle, this study attempts to include the Mind Mapping approach into the writing learning process. The objective of this study was to ascertain the procedure and outcome of argumentative essay writing. The writing process was elicited through interviews and open-ended questions; the writing results were elicited via a written exam. The approach employed is one of descriptive qualitative analysis. The results of post-test study indicate that students' comprehension of the generic structure of argumentative essays has considerably improved. That is, the Mind Mapping style of writing instruction can help students enhance their ability to write argumentative essays. Additionally, student responses indicate that they find it simpler to create argumentative and more focused essays using the Mind Mapping approach since it enables them to develop ideas more solidly and coherently.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pemberitaan terkait dengan adanya konflik pejabat di Indonesia yakni Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan dengan Haris Azhar dan Fatia Maulidiyanti. Penelitian yang dilakukan melihat dan mengkaji dari sudut pandang analisis wacana kritis versi Norman Fairclough, dengan mengedepankan dimensi analisis teks, praktik wacana dan praktik sosio budaya. Sumber data diperoleh dari media daring kompas.com. Berdasarkan penelitian dan analisis yang dilakukan dapat disimpulkan 1) berdasarkan analisis teks yang dilakukan ditemukan kosakata yang cenderung dimanfaatkan oleh pewacana atau pembuat berita dalam memproduksi beritanya. 2) analisis praksis wacana menunjukkan bahwa struktur argumentasi yang terdapat dalam berita kompas.com dengan jelas sebetulnya tidak memihak kepada siapapun. Hal itu terlihat dari redaksi kalimat dan isi beritanya dari awal sampai akhir. 3) analisis praksis sosiokultural atau sosial budaya menunjukkan bahwa media massa khususnya kompas.com menaikkan berita tersebut karena hal yang diberitakan sedang menjadi perhatian masyarakat Indonesia, apalagi melibatkan pejabat atau orang ternama di Indonesia yakni Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Haris Azhar dan Fatia Maulidiyanti.
