Abstract

Abstract

The nickel smelting industry in Indonesia generates substantial volumes of slag waste, which pose significant environmental risks if not managed effectively. This study aims to develop a utilization model for nickel slag employing a dynamic systems approach over the 2025–2034 time horizon. The research utilizes secondary data obtained from smelter company reports, relevant literature, and scenario simulations constructed using Powersim. The simulation outcomes reveal a progressive increase in slag generation that is disproportionate to the available processing capacity, resulting in the accumulation of unmanaged nickel slag. Scenario-based optimization demonstrates that enhancing processing capacity by approximately 5%–10% annually can markedly reduce the volume of unmanaged slag. These results underscore the importance of adopting a circular economy framework to support sustainable nickel slag utilization within the smelting industry.

Abstract

Companies involved in production activities consistently strive to achieve their strategic objectives, with profit maximization being one of the primary goals for maintaining competitiveness and ensuring long-term business sustainability. This goal can be pursued through optimal production planning, one of which involves the application of the Simplex Method (SM). The Simplex Method is a mathematical algorithm designed to solve Linear Programming (LP) problems, which focus on optimizing a linear objective function while accounting for various resource-related constraints. This paper presents a systematic literature review on the implementation of the Simplex Method for profit optimization in the manufacturing sector. A total of 30 relevant research articles published between 2019 and 2024 were analyzed, sourced from reputable academic databases such as Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. The findings demonstrate that the Simplex Method offers substantial benefits, including improved resource allocation, cost reduction, enhanced decision-making capabilities, increased productivity, and support for data-driven operational efficiency. These advantages underscore the method’s effectiveness as a quantitative decision-support tool in strategic industrial planning. The review also highlights the broad applicability of the Simplex Method across various countries and industrial sectors, particularly in food, automotive, chemical, and textile manufacturing. As the manufacturing landscape transitions into the era of Industry 4.0, it is strongly recommended that future research explores the integration of the Simplex Method with emerging technologies such as Big Data analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Hybrid Optimization Models to further enhance industrial competitiveness, adaptability, and sustainability.

Abstract

Inventory management in a finished goods warehouse often faces the challenge of quickly and accurately locating goods, which impacts operational efficiency and reduces inventory picking errors. This research aims to design a stock locator application that facilitates the real-time finding and monitoring of goods in finished goods warehouses. The methods used include user needs analysis, intuitive user interface-based system design, and web-based application development to ensure broad accessibility. In addition, the app implements an efficient location search algorithm to speed up stock searches. The application design significantly optimizes warehouse operations by replacing manual searching with precise digital navigation and route optimization, drastically reducing retrieval time. Accuracy is guaranteed through mandatory barcode validation and real-time inventory syncing, ensuring the physical stock always matches the digital record. Furthermore, it mitigates human error by eliminating manual data entry and enforcing strict, system-guided workflows that prevent incorrect picks before they occur. The application design uses a Use Case Diagram to map actors with an interest in inventory management and to define the technical design based on the functionality of the inventory management application. The design aims to avoid existing costs, such as Container Accommodation Costs or Shipping Delays. Before the implementation of this application, the total findings for 1 semester were 10 findings of existing shipping closing, after which 0 findings of existing shipping closing—the previous loss of Rp. 10,000,000 became Rp. 0. These findings make an important contribution to the application of information technology in warehouse management and open up opportunities to increase productivity through the digitization of storage and inventory sourcing processes.

Abstract

Inorganic waste, particularly plastic generated from school canteens and learning activities, remains a significant environmental challenge due to its non-biodegradability, which contributes to soil, water, and air pollution. Addressing this issue, this community service program aimed to enhance students' environmental awareness and practical skills in managing plastic waste by producing ecobricks, which were repurposed as eco-friendly plant pots to improve the school's aesthetic and ecological quality. Mercu Buana University implemented the program in collaboration with the Rawakalong Village Government to support SMKN 1 Gunung Sindur in achieving Exemplary Adiwiyata School status. The initiative combined participatory training sessions, hands-on Fs, and continuous mentoring, emphasizing the application of the 4R principles in the school environment. The results indicated a marked increase in students' engagement, knowledge, and skills in waste management, along with a measurable reduction in plastic waste volume. Ecobricks were successfully integrated into school greening activities, serving as both functional plant pots and tangible educational tools that reinforced sustainable behaviors. The program also contributed to the fulfillment of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) 3 and 7 and promoted experiential, community-based learning aligned with the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka initiative. This study demonstrates that ecobrick-based interventions can transform environmental challenges into educational opportunities, fostering sustainable practices and participatory learning among students. Moreover, the program highlights the potential to scale ecobrick initiatives across broader school and community contexts, supporting environmental stewardship and institutional commitment to sustainability. These findings provide practical and theoretical insights into integrating hands-on waste management strategies into school-based ecological education programs.
