Abstract

The study investigates the grilling system teachers applied at school to know the learners’ answers and “the” teachers’ reasons for achieving students’ speaking competence in English classrooms. The qualitative method is chosen to see the researcher's question responses, the observation in the classroom, and some questions toward the educators. As the findings implied, the two teachers required prompting, changing cognitive demand levels, and providing additional information in display type more dominant than others questions strategies and effective communication. The teacher at the private school repeated the questions and translated them into Indonesia or mixed the questions to relieve the learners' understanding about inquiries and responses effectively. Nevertheless, the totality of English was engaged by the teacher at the state school.  The students were easier to understand simpler after the teacher explores many questions and applied much longer time toward the wait time method. The study presented the helpful results of the questions used when the teachers operated in the teaching and learning process and upgraded learners' responses in participating in the learning process. This study offered effective teachers’ questioning strategies in increasing learners' communicative skills, particularly in achieving speaking competence.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the language delivered by the teachers in the term of teachers’ scaffolding talk and the behavior engagement responded by the students in ESP agriculture Classroom. The investigation was conducted at a University in Sumbawa Besar, West Nusa Tenggara. Field note and video recordings were used to collect the data. During the observation, the data were then transcribed, simplified, displayed, and interpreted. The result shows there are four kinds of scaffolding talks namely prompting, dialoging, extension, and modeling from six kinds of scaffolding talk. Those scaffolding talks can facilitate the behavioral engagement of the students in ESP Classroom namely paying attention or focusing on the lesson, attempting to answer the question from the teacher, and exerting themselves actively participating in classroom interaction. These result suggest that lecturers and teachers may consider to apply the scaffolding talk before teaching the students in the classroom because methodology used by the teacher in teaching is as important as a talk in teaching. DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v4i2.4264

Abstract

Teacher feedback is useful information for EFL students’ improvement. It assists students to know their weaknesses and strengths in English learning. However, students might perceive teacher feedback differently from the teacher's intentions. This study examined students’ perceptions of their teacher feedback in English class and investigated their self-regulated learning after receiving feedback. It is a descriptive-qualitative study involving ten EFL students of the senior high school using semi-structured interview questions through online communication. Subsequently, the data were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis of students’ perceptions of teacher feedback and their self-regulated learning. The finding showed that the students perceived teacher feedback as positive and negative. Upon receiving teacher feedback, the students developed their self-regulated learning, such as setting goals, monitoring, self-motivating, seeking-help, adopting, and self-evaluating in English learning. This study offers implications for English teachers and educators to improve their feedback quality in English classroom assessment.

Abstract

The feedbacks given by teacher is the important role in monitoring learners during the learning process. Teacher serves feedbacks in various ways, can be correction, praise, suggestion, and so on. By receiving feedbacks, learners are able to realize their errors and they feel motivated to develop and improve their performance. However, not all learners have the same characteristics in accepting the feedbacks well. Some of learners may feel insecure during or after getting feedbacks. Therefore, this study explores learners’ perceptions for teacher’s feedback of their oral performances, whether they feel motivated or feel the other way. The questionnaires were the main tool to gain the information from the learners, and followed by the interview from some learners to get the further and detail explanation. The result shows that most of learners feel motivated from the teacher’s feedbacks, and they have intention to perform better because they understand their errors. However, there are some other aspects that decrease their motivation by the way teacher delivers the feedbacks.
